So I'm probably making this trade happen tomorrow. It'll be my D80 + D90 w/MB-D80 grip + 4GB, 8GB SD cards for a D300 with MB-D10 grip + (2) 8GB CF cards

I'll be losing video obviously with the D90, but since I've had the D90, I've only use the video maybe 4-5 times. That's the only con I can find with this trade.

Thoughts?

It's a good deal, imo. I can find all kinds of faults with the D300 when compared to the D700 (and Lafora finds all kinds of faults with teh D700 when compared to the D3), but it's still significantly better for shooting than a D90, the AF is better, the AF motor is better, the controls on the body are better, it's better built - the sensor is basically the same though. The D80's only value is in having multiple bodies for shooting in perfect lighting.

Always keep a backup camera.

I think the gain in build quality outweighs the loss of a very limited backup.

id hate to lose video, BUT the d90 was never the best around since the 5DMKII came out.

I dont see the benefit of having 2 bodies unless you are trying to make money at it, so seems like an ok upgrade (provided the dollar amounts of all the cameras add up to the right prices for such a trade)

My backup has always been a P&S.

fucking do it. the d300 is everything those other bodies aren't.

once you've purchased a higher level body you'll never want to spend any money, even a buck, on something less.

Been napping most of the afternoon after being up all night from ice pelting the windows + the flu. Let's see:

For a used D300? If the sensor in the D300 measures up like we have discussed via PM, then I wouldn't consider recommending one in any circumstance.

jon! replied to me with the "if you don't make money" thing again, but we've covered that. There are things called hobbies and people buy stuff for them sometimes. Not sure why some people feel the need to validate every purchase they make.

I'm playing devil's advocate here. I would be pissed if I just had a D300. I'd rather have the D90 + spare dslr and save up.

These what ifs drive me batshit.

I just think of it as I'd rather have a D300 than a D90. A camera that can't go above ISO 800 without getting super noisy such as the D80 is only useful when conditions are perfect; that isn't much of a backup in my mind.

That said, I do personally feel that owning *at least* two bodies is important if you're at all serious about your images. In a perfect world, those two bodies should complement rather than duplicate each other. Since I'm not a real baller, I have FF and crop bodies of the same generation (a baller would have a D3S and a D3X).

I guess to me it depends on where you want to be? Ive never shot with a D90 but ive had a D300 for almost 2 years and about 8 months with a grip and i love it. If you can save up for a reasonable upgrade from the D90 so i dont see the point in the trade cause you do currently have a back up.

Used D90s are going for a little less than $700.00 and a D80 for about $365.00 and used D300's are still over a grand plus a MB-10 which are $200.00 new. So in terms of a deal youd win depending on the mileage on the sensor. In terms of not having a back up... ehh

I only shoot as a hobby and fun. I'm not too concerned with having a backup. The D80 was going to get sold anyhow. As Scott said, if you're going to have a backup, atleast have something decent. IF you backup is only good in perfect conditions, you will more than likely leave yourself stranded.

Thanks for the input guys! Should get getting the D300 this week!
