Anyone have good/bad experiences with purchasing camera equipment off of Craigslist? Stories? Scams?

I've never had a bad experience but I tend to be cautious about who, when and where I meet. My last few transactions have been in the $1000-range so I took some extra precautions and everything worked out well for me. Meeting in public places, not carrying the cash on me when buying something (i.e. I meet the person in a public place to check out the gear but leave the cash in my car), bringing a friend along, etc.

I sold both my D50 and D90, and bought my 7D via craigslist without an issue yet.

Extra precautions were taken when buying as above mentioned.

I purchased my Nikon 85mm f/1.8 from craigslist, and even drove a ways to get it. Guy was cool, very straightforward, came up dangling 2 cameras around his neck...it's pretty easy if you choose a public meeting place, and setup ground rules for how it will happen.

1. Always pick a well lit, public place
2. Up front, explain that you want to be able to do thorough testing of the equipment and sale is only dependent if you are satisfied with the testing
3. Cash only
4. if buying a body, bring a good lens with you
5. if buying a lens, bring a body with you
6. don't buy memory cards...they're cheap, just buy them brand new

I can't stress this enough...test the hell out of anything you buy. pull on the camera straps a little, open every door/cover, press every button, etc.

It's hit and miss.

After selling a P&S, old flash, kit lens... The hassle isn't worth it in Atlanta. Just going to keep my old stuff unless I know someone on a forum could use it.

Tried to sell a few lenses, nothing panned out. That was upper end stuff, lower grade gear probably goes like wildfire but I wouldn't expect to make any good amount of $$$ off it.

if your buying dont be afraid to offer ridiculous lowball offers.

If your selling, dont be afraid to scoff at, and refuse ridiculous lowball offers.

^ don't take this advice if it is for something you really want. Anyone who accepts a ridiculous lowball offer is either selling stolen, black market, or broken stuff. Ask them what their lowest offer is and go from there.

If you sound serious, they may return your email/call. If you just say "will you take $180 for it?", delete.

I never respond to lowball offers, ever. i'm never that desperate to sell something.

I should add a footnote that im the most patient buyer ever. Ill wait 6 months to get a good deal (did for my 7D). If you need it now, dont mess with CL anyway, and just buy it new or refurbed online somewhere.

im actually truing to orchestrate the trade + cash of my 7D for a 60D right now.

Looking to get the trade + a 16gb card and $300 to me currently.

Any reason why you're looking to trade your 7D for a 60D? everywhere i've read, most people have been saying stuff like "why buy a 60D when you can get a 7D for $200-400 more?"

from what I've seen too, 7D is better than the 60D. Even the 50D is "better" than the 60D...

my opinion only but no, 50D is not better than the 60D. i have shot with both (and currently own the 60D) and the 60D blows away the 50D in every regard (except for maybe fps but is 5.3fps vs 6.3fps really that big a deal?)

yeah the difference in fps between the 60D and 7D is pretty meaningful but 50d vs 60d? not so much...

The 7D is FAR superior to the 60D in every way imaginable save for 2. Audio, the 7D has been plagued with no automatic gain control disable which destroys your audio when you try to use any sort of external mic. The 5DMKII, T2i, have firmwares that have fixed this and to date the 60D is the only camera to launch with this feature onboard. The 7D has been ignored in this area by canon, and ot make matters worse they have done something crazy to the firmware that makes it virtually unhackable by the hacking commumnity and they have even abandoned trying at this point.

This isnt something most people need, but for me who uses it for film, i totally need it. I have a decent sound recorder/mixer, and various microphones but the camera destroys the sound, meaning if you want good sound you would have to manually match up each sepearately recorded audio clip to the video which is extremely time consuming or just live with wrecked sound. For probably 90% of shooters this is a non-issue, but there have been a lot of film guys up/down grading to the T2i, and 60d for this reason. I dont want to step all the way down to a t2i, so ill jump to the 60D. Video wise the T2i, 7D, and 60D are identical.

Ive been waiting for a work around for a long time and there is none at this point.

I hate to lose features, but still wise the 60D is still enough camera for me, so ill live. It also has a flip out LCD which is better for film, and ill gain a few hundred bucks i can use on lighting etc...
