Hey guys.
Ive been shooting with a first gen Canon Digital Rebel EOS 300D for the last 4+ years. With some Christmas spending money, i am thinking its time for an upgrade. If at all possible, i would like to retain use of all my accessories and lenses.

Will my EF-S lenses work on a full frame body?

Im open to suggestions and would rather spend a little more on something that will last me the same 4+ year lifespan.

Nope. Wanting to put EF-S lenses on a FF = . A few guys have rigged 17-55 and 10-22 EFS lenses to fit, but it's better off using a crop.

What's your budget?

EF-S lenses will not work with the 1d and 5ds I believe. I know they will work on 7d, 50d, 60d, etc...

I'm not sure what you shoot, if it's hobby or money, etc... but I really like the 7d. I'm sure guys with way more experience can offer better advice.

Canon EF-S lens will not work with a full frame body. Some other manufactures may. For example my sigma 10-20 fit my 5d MKII but the vignetting was horrible. As a replacement body, just what I have read on the 60D is fantastic and your lens should have no problem with it.

Look here for DPreviews of it http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos60D/page20.asp.

I'd like to keep the budget under a grand.
All my photo work is hobby based, but i really do enjoy the time.
Another thought is video capabilities are not important as i have other capable equipment for that.

60D body fits the budget at $999 from Adorama and you'd get it next day without needing new glass.

Found a t2i forsale locally. thoughts?

Canon T2i/550D (W/Lens and bag) - $675
Great after xmas deal! Just in time for New Years!
I've had the camera only a few months and has no scratches and no problems. It's only been used lightly. I've recently decided to upgrade to a full frame so that's my reason for selling it.

Includes:
Rebel T2i Body, Eyecup Ef, Wide Strap, USB Interface Cable, AV Cable, Battery Pack LP-E8, Battery Charger LC-E8, EOS Digital Solution Disc & Instruction, Booklets, 2/8Gig Memory Cards, 3 year warranty (that I will pay to transfer into your name) AND if that's not all I'm also INCLUDING a 50mm 1.8 lens AND a Slingbag all together you would pay well over $1000.

I'd buy a one new one + new lens for $799 and go from there.

On amazon I made a T2i "Listmania" for my T2i camera bag shopping list containing stuff I use:

Thanks, 86CRXsi.

Mike, I'm thinking of getting rid of the XS. It's slow as shit and crap in low light (which I found out this week)

It's either the T2i or the 7d.

under a grand? i'd save my money and go t2i before 60d.

just over a grand? i'd steal an old canon point and shoot, call the canon loyalty program, and get a 7d.

if you insisted on going full frame, 5d classic works. 1d2n, etc etc. but really, you're going to end up with the t2i and you'll love it.

also, what lenses do you have? if you don't have anything much, sell it all off for a d7000 and whatever basic lens you want to get. the thing is a beast.

Both cameras perform well in low light. Even the T1i is good with fast glass.

D7000 is nice, but a whole different ballgame. jsmonet discovered the darkside (again?), I see. \:D

Someone tell me more about this loyalty program. i have a g5 and an older point and shoot collecting dust. can these be used towards a new purchase?

Yep. You can get refurbished cameras through the loyalty program. I have tons of old canon P&S but it's easier to buy what you want when you want. Plus, it's not a used camera.

jon and Gb will along shortly now that you have sent out the refurb beacon.

d7000's low-light performance and IQ rivals the d3. it absolutely wrecks anything remotely close to it in price.

for the loyalty program pricing:
go to canon's online store, check out the slr refurbs. find your camera of choice, make sure it's in stock, then knock 20% off the price. add shipping.

You don't have to sell me on it. I'd love to have one, but am split down the middle with lenses and gear. In time...

The refurb'd 7D is the right choice but it's a pretty big step up from the original Digital Rebel. Be prepared to learn a lot.

I wouldn't bother with another Rebel body if it was me. They're great to learn on but once you use a prosumer once it would be really hard to go back. I'm sure the T2i is a great camera, but a 40D/50D/60D is still going to blow it out of the water in almost every way. It's a shame you're so invested in EF-S lenses, otherwise a used 5Dc or 1DMK2/2n is a real no-brainer at the price these days. It cost me ~$250 to go from my 40D to a 1D2 about a year ago and I can tell you that it was easily the best $250 on camera gear I've ever spent.

i wonder if the 7d is a tad too much. not just in price, but if it's too much camera.

hit a camera shop and play with both. both are crops. the af on the 7d is off the hook. the t2i is just a fair amount less expensive.

knowing how I am, i'd get the nicer camera right away rather than take the depreciation when I inevitably sell off the rebel

edit: and once again, hey OP, post what lenses you have. it might be that your ef-s lenses really aren't that big of a deal and can be sold off. 1d2n is *sexy*

I've been testing the weather sealing of the 7D near the limit here in the Costa Rican rainforests. The top info LCD got a little foggy, but the rest has been holding up nicely. T2i does not have weather sealing if that matters.

Same results here using my T2i in 100% humidity + downpours last summer. I didn't have anything to fog up, though. I got caught in several rainstorms that drenched my gear and it's good to go. If I planned on hiking through a 3rd world country, the 7D would be first on my list for sure. The weather sealing is worth shit unless you're using weather-proofed lenses, which no one here uses anyway.

That D7000 is still stuck in my head thanks to jsmonet...

Hell no. Only the MkII versions of the 70-200 f/4L IS and 70-200 f/2.8 IS and a few others (mainly new ones) are weather-proofed.

This guy's budget is under $1000 and pro body suggestions don't compute. A body should only be 1/3 of your budget regardless. 2/3 goes towards glass, memory cards, tripod, bag, filters, battery grip, software, computer, website / photo acct, flashes & lighting, batteries, etc. Think of all the other shit you have to buy. A 430EX II should be mandatory if OP plans on using the camera indoors unless he already has baller f/2.8 IS glass.

If OP has all of the above stuff, then never mind.

that's why i was saying the t2i is probably a fine idea. i mean shit, i want to say 1d4/d3s + 12 grand in lenses just because it's the internet and i don't much care about his budget, but that's not realistic \:\)

t2i + throw some money at stuff works out fine. if you know you'll be using it in shit weather, entertain the idea of getting a 7d. whatever.

If you're going to use on camera flash indoors, then you definitely need the Lumiquest Promax system (or something similar) to both bounce light off the ceiling and send some of forward to light up faces.

All L lenses provide a level of weather protection, but only a handful of them are actually "weather-sealed" (when coupled with a pro body) to withstand pretty hardcore conditions.

And I'm not sure what Mike is talking about, but I've used or owned more than a handful of the weather-sealed lenses in my few short years of shooting.

I didn't know you had a 7D. Congrats on the new body. As far as glass, I think we're on the same page. I know jsmonet has at least one or two that are weather proofed.

Never seen those things Scott posted for onboard flash before. Pretty good execution of a rigged diffuser. Might have to look at them to keep around just in case.

I'm surprised everybody here is dismissing the 60D. I have it and it's a really great camera. Ignore all the haters that complain that it doesn't have a magnesium body or micro-adjustment.

60D body with 2x 16gb class 6 SDHC cards for $931.59.

Another thing to consider in going from the Digital Rebel to the T2i would be the migration of all your memory cards from CF to SD. A 40D/50D/7D would still allow you to retain your CF cards.

Hey guys. Thanks for all the insight!

I ended up making a purchase last night. I picked up a lightly used t2i off craigslist with a canon 50mm prime, kit lens, slingshot bag, 2 16gb cards, kit charger, car charger, and a bunch of cleaners. the seller also transferred the remaining 2 years of warranty to my name. All parts were mint, not a blemish to be found anywhere.

I decided to go forward with the T2i even after looking at the 7D and 60D. For my level of usage, and the body i came from, im excited about the huge upgrade.

With the money left over, i am on the hunt for a nice zoom lens for action shots at the track.
