so lightroom 3's been out a little while and I'm wondering if you folks have any tips for making the most of it.

I like the x= presets for some fun. no doubt there are more out there.

nate's layers post got me wondering how much work in LR is too much. Sure it has touch up tools and whatnot, but with photoshop on my system, I get the feeling some of those lightroom tools are better left unused.

lightroom is a kick. ass. org tool. I need to (shoot a hell of a lot more so i have a lot more pix to...) actually get used to using the grouping tools it gives me both at and after import

omg halp

Go easy on the noise reduction and sharpening. LR3 has a tendency to get REAL cartoonish if you overdo it.

The key to lightroom is to use it WITH PS. They integrate flawlessly. Lightroom isn't as in depth. Usually I will make basic adjustments in lightroom, and then from there I will highlight images I want, then Right click---> open as layers in CS5. Does half the work from there.

Then when you hit save in PS, (JUST SAVE, not SAVE AS) it will automatically re-import and stack in lightroom. Make final changes, and boom, done.

The key to using lightroom for me is organization.

Go on a shoot, import to lightroom, and then you can go through the photos and color mark them. Get rid of the trash and then mark what you'd like to work on, and then go from there. Organization is key.

Yea honestly I only use LR for organizational purposes and basic RAW adjustments. I prefer to do the heavy work in PS. Also, I'm still on LR2 and CS4. (CS3 and no LR at all at work )

Tagging helps, but I just save as a shoot name, then I can just go into that folder and revisit shots from a specific shoot.

Like Matt suggested, I quit trying to tag my pics when importing them after a month of getting headaches. Tagging is usually one of the last steps after developing them for me. Works better imho.

x2.

I use ViewNX for both my organizing and previewing since unlike Bridge, it's easily set up for two monitors - one with the thumbnails and one with a full screen view.

cheers,
scott

lightroom is tits on dual monitors.

since i'm ditching my desktop and dual 22's in favor of my macbook pro + the apple 27, i get the feeling i'll be hurting for extra monitor area soon. in a month or two i'll be posting up "hay sea esseye, how does i hooked up a pair monitorz to my slutbook?" haha

edit: and i flippin hate bridge. laggier than itunes and not genuinely useful since LR integrates so well with everything else.
