I need a digital photo made of one of the D.C. monuments, shot from a specific angle in the middle of the night (between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.). I'm in California and can't get away, or I'd do it myself. I'll pay $250 cash. If you're interested, please send me two of your best images and a one- to two-sentence description of your photographic equipment.

Location: D.C.
Compensation: $250
This is at a non-profit organization.

A friend of mine, trying to be helpful, sent me this link. I started responding to it, even had an email up before I realized how fishy this is.

Basically this guy wants you to send him an email with all you gear...I imagine you can't call because he has a DC area code. He'll pick the guys with the most impressive gear list and say "great! I need this monument from this angle by tomorrow!" maybe even give you a google maps image. Whatever this is, there's no reason it has to be shot between 2am and 5am, if you want nighttime you could still shoot it at 10:00.

Anyway, I'd never seen anything like this, but emailing someone a list of all your equipment and then telling him where you'll be between 2am and 5am downtown seems a bit

oh, and how am I going to get this $250 cash when you're out in California?

I've never bought or sold anything on CL before, is this an age old scam? A new scam? or an honest solicitation that I'm overthinking?

It's not uncommon for people to commission pictures from photographers, and craigslist seems like a normal place to ask.

find out if you can call them and get the details, and if you go through with it then bring a crew with you.

If the ad had requested a monument shot at night I probably wouldn't raise an eyebrow...I just don't see any reason to specify a time window late at night when nobody is around.

oh whoa. I somehow missed that part when I first read it.

yeah, that sounds sketch. But they could just want the shot with no people around, and at that time of night it's pretty empty.

Still, for $250 to have some fun shooting at night? I'd do it and put it toward the "new glass" fund.

but I'd get people to come with me - don't go it alone.

I thought of that too...but then why not specify that you want the photo without any people? At night the foreground will be black anyway and not too many people are walking around the monuments late at night (10-11:00 even).

Bringing someone along would definitely be a given, but if someone is showing up with the expectation of robbing you I imagine they'll be prepared (couple guys, weapons, whatever)

Maybe I'll send the guy an email just to see what kind of response I get. Perhaps send another email from another account with a different (yet impressive) gear list. If he green lights both photographers it's a scam for sure.

oh shit you are fucking Columbo - I never would've thought about the second email thing.

If that happens then you should tip off the cops and have them waiting for him.

How do you feel about a sting operation man?? You can go out there with a Kodak disposable with a mock telephoto (cardboard lol) and a big backpack stuffed with newspaper and I'll hide in the bushes keeping an eye on you. If someone approaches you and you give me the secret signal I'll rush them with a half extended tripod and fuck his night up

I don't know, lol. That sounds slightly farfetched for me, but I'll give it some thought if it helps the greater good.

Hello,

Regarding your Craigslist ad for a photo taken of a DC Monument...what specifically are you looking to have done?

I have a Canon 5D Mark II with various lenses including my favorite 17-40mm f/4L, 50mm f/1.4 and the awesome 70-200mm f/2.8 IS. I use tripod with remote trigger for nighttime shooting.

Attached are a couple of samples!

Thanks,

Robert Bark

I haven't even responded yet

I'm going to, but I have to set up a new Gmail account. I only have one at the moment and it's the same as my flickr name and all sorts of stuff

I love your email though
