So, I'm getting shitty speeds at home, using Rogers cable 150, hooked up to their 'advanced' modem + wifi router. Videos on fb, youtube, etc would just stall and spin... NetFlix seems to be ok (running on wifi, 1 ft from the router.)

So, I decided to pick up a new wifi router, the Asus RT-AC3100, and maim the Rogers router to just a modem, and see if it'll improve... (I haven't dug deep enough to know whether it's both wired and wireless speeds sucking...)

Will this make shit run faster? (I won't be upgrading any of the wifi clients per se...)

If not, I may try jumping onto TekSavvy as an alternative. At this point, I have no clue where the bottleneck is.

If you get that router, flash the asus-merlin on it. (credit to LNXGUY for reco Asus routers)

https://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/

After you flash Merlin on it, install ad-blocking on the router w/ this

https://www.ab-solution.info/

Viola, no more ads on the home network.

As for the speed - try connecting directly hardwired to see if it's the modem/service by rogers. That will rule out a lot of the speed issues you may have.

if netflix works fine but youtube and fb.. might not be the router/modem. unless its blocking certain sites.

have you done any tracert tests?

ah..

if you use speedtest.net, it's likely that the speed is overly inflated by the ISP. Use FAST.com to test out your speed.

not just that, speed alone doesn't dictate connectivity issues, especially when its to specific sites.

I was dreading the pain of setting up and installing this thing ... i.e. if things work, why change it. I thought about it, asked about it, and well, it was pretty damn fuckin' easy... (i.e. I was thinking how to give the modem an IP, etc... I already know how to log into the modem, and set to bridge mode.)

The thing blinks like a fucking epileptic nightmare. And it's big.

But guess what. It fucking WORKS, and wireless speeds are much, much faster on the wireless clients I've tried... a bedroom upstairs is getting on average 3-4x faster speeds than before. In the kitchen my notebook is getting 2-3x faster than before.

Pages loading and stuff SEEM to have been resolved, but it's too soon to tell.

So yeah, I like.

The interface is much better than routers of years past.

What kind of Rogers router do you have?
This is their latest one and it's been out for a year. You could have tried switching the router first.

Upgrade to the new modem. It's better in every aspect.

Such amaze recommendation.

Suggests to get off Rogers, and offers no suggestions to a new ISP.

Brilliant! Unless it's Miata ISP.

$99 for TV + internet deal a couple of years ago.
Even without that, just call when the current deal expires.

Have to be willing to leave. I tried for them to price match bell on gigabit and they wouldn't budge, I said fine and started the process to move over to Bell. Day before my home line was to be transferred over, Rogers calls and finally gives me the deal.

^ Yup, its getting harder and harder (from my experience). I actually began the process to cancel my services and shortly before my last day negotiations started backup.

I believe I'm paying $115 taxes in for
- 1GB Unlimited internet
- VIP TV + HD PVR + HD box
- Basic home phone

Wasn't easy but I'm content.

That's a sweet deal. When will Rogers get wireless TV boxes? I have no choice but to stay with Bell because I don't want to fish wires to the various rooms in my house.

The deal is still available but you have to get it through a field rep now

I called about a 'deal in the wild' to a 'field rep' who was in Ottawa Guy asks me where I am, I say Ontario, and say I'm already with Rogers... He said sorry new sign-ups only

Dunno man ... such a f'ing hassle on these things... \:\|

Like I said, get in contact with a Bell field rep. Get the gigabit promo and then play the game with Rogers. As it stands you are begging for a better deal, they have no reason to give it to you now. If they see you are serious about moving then they will take action.

Worse case is that you are getting a better deal with bell at a cheaper price if Rogers doesn't do anything.

At this point I am quite willing to jump between the two every few years to get the promos if that is what it takes to save a bunch of money each month.

So I went to the nearest Rogers store, and sure enough, they have the shiny new white tower ... They punched it into my account, and apparently my account does not allow for an upgrade to that f'ing modem \:\| So they ended up giving me an almost-identical black one, but with "AC" beside the Rogers logo ...

Who knows if it's better or not, as I'm now using the Asus router... The Asus router has a much better interface and appears easier to tweak, newbie-wise ...
