My sister got rear ended in her 2011 Civic and insurance has deemed it a right off. She's has a newer Santa Fe as their family hauler and isn't looking to spend a lot or get into payments to replace the Civic which is mainly used by her husband to get to work. Looking to spend about $10k

She was given an Elantra for her rental but feels its actually less roomy than her Civic, so she's considering a Sonata. Her husband went to see a 2.0T and really likes them, however he's not one to do ANY homework so I'm trying to talk some sense into them. Apart from requiring premium fuel, how is this model for reliability long term, as they wouldn't be looking to get rid of it in the near future?

I don't think those 2.0T required premium.

same boat as me for general used car shopping lol.

re. sonata:
they rust to shit in 5-6 years (least the older models do).
handling...eiiiihh, no. also steering feel may be ass (not sure if most ppl drive back to back vs. a honda or toyota/whatever)
re. motor/electronics no idea but they have seemed to improve over the years

i say stick to a civic (get newest one they can for 10K), else get a clean 4cyl accord if they want roomier.

Ya I read that somewhere too, but is that just another case of the car not really needing premium, ie it has sensors to adjust for the lower octane but premium is recommended? I'm not a turbo engine guru but why would you want to go with regular vs premium, apart from cost savings?

Or maybe finance an HRV, they have been selling very well (QC of course mainly) and the 6spd is fun, plus you have more room for the same price as a civic.

it is slow as balls though lol.

What year Sonata?

The 2.0T is a great engine and doesn't require 91. It is setup to run either 87 or 91. You get a 12-14hp increase using 91, but if you aren't pushing the car then it doesn't really make a difference.

As far as rusting after 5-6 years, nope not any more. Older ones absolutely. We have a few very high mileage customers with them and with just doing regular maintenance they are still running strong.

Steering can be a little light for some, but it's fine for the average driver. Especially if it's being relegated to commuter status.

LMK if you have any other questions and I'll try to answer them.

Thanks Violent Spectre. They're looking at a 2011 or 2012. They're average plain jane drivers who don't push it so it'll be a daily regular commuting vehicle. I'll let you know if they or I have any additional questions.

Cool. Obviously try and get the newest one they can. I really like them personally and wouldn't hesitate to buy one myself. My Coupe is at 80k of fairly hard driving and it's still running strong \:D

Gf has a 2011 non turbo one with all options except navigation. Given her zero issues and has no rust (however she has krown'ed the car). Good on gas and for the money it's decent. No complaints.

New corolla is awesome, 10x nicer looking than a civic.

The Sonata is a great car too, the hybrid ones look pretty solid. I'd daily one.

You thinking Mazda 3/6 my friend.

Jeff's gf has a Sonata (not 2.0T doe) and it's rock solid. That is based on actual ownership not reading on internet/assuming all Korean cars are shit and drive like ass.
/Treed

I personally drove the new 2017 Honda Civic with the K20 engine (loaner from dealer), it drove the same across its class (Elantra, Sentra, Corolla) and very boring. So I am not sure what you are talking about.
