Hey Guys, It's been a while since I've posted but I do lurk regularly and I can tell you guys still know your cars.
I currently have a BMW 540 6 speed that I am starting to consider replacing, but after testing out a number of vehicles nothing has whoo'd me out of my car.
I am looking for a used sport sedan with decent power (V8 would be nice, Japanese would be nice) and something that has good throttle response...A lot of the cars I have tested take a second to respond to inputs - that kills it for me. Makes me want to hold onto the 540 as I'm getting the feeling all these new drive by wire car kill the response.
Some cars I have tested - 2012 G37x delay in throttle and when you got on it, it never came alive
2012 BMW 535 - hated everything about it -
2012 WRX STI - Not bad - but not great, It comes to life and you have to shift - handled great but interior is cheap and I feel like I've outgrown it already. I typically hold onto a car for 10 years.
Still to try Lexus IS 350 Lexus LS 460 - V8 but probably too luxury and not enough sport Audi S4 V8 M3 - I really don't want to cuz I bet I'll like it
A big part of me wants to say F it and get another Rav4 V6 sport, wife has one and it performs decent.
Do you guys have any recommendations? I'm trying to keep it under 20K if possible
Thanks

was gonna suggest some but then i saw your comment "I'm trying to keep it under 20K if possible" - yeeaaahhh that's not happening with the better cars you had mentioned...
Unless he gets a car w/ a branded title or a rebuild.

535 was 23K - I've seen some M3s as low as 25 - probably need 10K worth or work mind you. Yeah it's tuff to find anything interesting in the 20K range but I'm trying to stay in around that range if possible
Never Miata - you could swap whatever you want in that thing and it would still be a chick car

Thinking about holding onto the 540 as there is only 170K on it...but I like to have an idea of what I'll be getting next in case I have to make a quick decision.

Acura Legend damn that's taking it back. Good luck finding one without a bunch of chrome on it.
Yes is350
Hows about a RX8 with a swapped LS motor? I liked the balance of that car but the reliability was it's downfall.

Keep it, do you have the m tech bumpers? If so, this is a no brainer, the cars with the m sport are still head turners.

i will throw out there that you will hate the audi if you value response, feel and feedback. it's a competent chassis and great car, but feels galaxies away from an e39.

Risky I don't have any picts on my comp or phone but it's a Oxford Green with Tan inside. Unfortunately it's not a facelift model or Mtech bumpers...however because it's a 98 it's pre vanos and makes more power than the Vanos models.
4age thanks for that feedback if I do test an audi (not a ticking time bomb v8) I'll keep that in mind so I won't be totally shocked if I hate it...I was very disapointed with the F10 535 - it was even the sport model with paddles but I was so distracted by the process of getting it into gear releasing the brake and friggen with the signal lights that I forgot to push the sport button it might have sharpened things up but it felt huge.

I think the throttle response is adequate for a street car that's not cable, but the clutch engagement is atrocious. I can't wait to do the delay valve delete.

The only IS350 you can get would be the prior body model which is 10 years old and probably beaten up.
For $20k, I'd just get a Civic Si Sedan. Probably not age appropriate but at least its 200 HP and has modern options that won't break. On top of that, you can probably still sell it for a good price a few years later.

Sport button is not magic. No feel through the wheel and zippier throttle won't make it a nice driver unfortunately. You will like an Audi more than an f10 (more feel), but it's leagues different from an e39
R button in new CTR...wakes up the car something fierce apparently.

A2B I did consider (for a brief moment) a Si sedan but I think that would be too much of a step back...I had my SiR for 11 years (that's what brought here back in 99) I ended up doing exedy stage 1 clutch and lightweight flyweel and the throttle response on that car was great as a result.
I have seen some decent examples of is350s that looked ok - on trader, but haven't inspected any yet.
Euforic Good to hear that the Audi is better than the F10 that gives me hope for that car. Can't believe they have a clutch delay valve in that thing, the 540 had one too and I got rid of ASAP - Yes the e39 chassis seems to be good, it took me a while to like the car coming from something so nimble and light before.
Hearing you guys praise the e39 makes me wanna hold onto it but the thing I'm facing with the 540 is that to freshen it up to my standards (not including some small rust spots) would cost more than what the car is worth. I would be OK with this if I wasn't facing the potential failure of timing guides at around the 200K mark...and this would be a repair that would again be more money than what the car is worth...Potentially spend 6K on a car that is showing rust and would only be worth 1-3 Gs
My mechanic that only works on BMWs tells me to avoid the 335 (he said maintenance on them can be brutal) and recommends a 09 - 10 328. He told me basically anything after 2010 has lost the feel - minus the M3

Rage yes - the BRZ/86 would be great if I was 20 and didn't have kids.
Anyone ever try out a Cayenne? I know crazy maintenance but it does check some boxes for me - not so much the styling but the room and performance.

Screaming that R almost makes me want to get back into a Honda but the styling on that thing is so boy racer while priced for middle aged incomes.
Any thoughts on a C63 AMG sedan? I've seen some examples in the mid to high 20s

Yeah for sure thus why I'm not already in one. I'm sure a 5K repair is not uncommon for a car of that nature and if it's anything like a M3 the motor is 20K +

I found the prior gen IS too small on the inside. If you could stretch it a bit, go for the TLX.

That TLX doesn't look too bad, I tested an early 2000s model with 6 speed like 8 years ago and it did nothing for me, but this doesn't look to bad from the pictures.

Keep the e39.
I kinda wish I kept my E36M3, if you are not OCD like me, these old bmw's are a great compromise in quality/fit and finish for a really rewarding driving feel.
Either up your budget or just drive the e39.
I love my S4, but to get a clean one with the sport differential (you must get this, many don't) 20k won't cut it and they need a few mods to be just right.
Also a big fan of the Cayenne, my buddy has the previous gen GTS and it's pretty slick, love how it drives.

Nice glad to hear the Cayenne is decent - GTS is nice model for sure.
Yeah bang for buck my e39 feels better than most cars I have tested - not bad since it's only worth a couple of G's...After I did the muffler delete I could finally hear the motor...I should have done that day one instead of last summer.
I'm entertaining a 05 c55 AMG benz right now but everything about it sounds sketchy so not rushing out to test it just yet.

tlx came out in 2015, you probably test drove a TSX which is the exact same size, but drives totally different (i had a 2010 tsx 6 spd). the I4 does feel sporty because of the 8 spd DCT and the 4ws but is about 100hp slower than the v6 SH-awd.

I can do 25 but trying to keep it lower if possible as I only drive 10K a year...but I am open to other suggestions.
Cayenne - Fuel mileage isn't much of a concern because of the little amount of KM I drive
Titty the TL I drove was early 2000s model called the "dynamic" cuz of the 6 speed. I drove the first gen TSX with 6 speed and it didn't do much - felt like my SiR but with less excitement - no VTEC blaring for everyone to hear me trying to pass them.

spd dmn - No 18 S4 - that thing has to be like 60gs I'm sure.
And if I test it nothing much else would compare...After I tested out a clapped out e39 M5 my car felt like a grampa's car - so docile. Gotta love it when they give you the keys and don't want to come with you on the drive...show up at a busy time as they would rather be at the desk trying to close sales than have the shit scared out of them lol

The Cayenne GTS has an optional air suspension that is MAD $$$ to fix. If you go with the Cayenne, try to stay away from that.

Just buy an 335i and be done with it. A few mods and you'll be happy I'm sure.

A GTS Cayenne popped up close to me in Pickering and i was gonna test it out but after I had some maintenance records sent my way (good on the dealership) I have opted out of it. There was a history of complaints about hesitation under acceleration - last owner had it for a year replaced the suspsension for 3.5Gs than dumped it...sounds like to much hassle and $$$ repairs - porsche go figure
Yes Type S might need to be tested out...I'll see if I can find a manual.
LNX tell me about it, that 335 has been on my radar for years and with a few bucks thrown at it, it's easy to get 400hp

If anyone is interested, 2016 C450, lease ends September this year.
Lease payments $1,200/month, $48K residual (it retailed for $70K).
Almost 2 year old car with less than 10K kms, 60% of it was incurred from November-December when we got rid of the ML63 and waited for the Model X. It just sits in the garage.
It's a shame to see it go, such great value for a 340 killer (BMW hater here) . Right now my family needs larger cars.

Well the M3 was hit while it was here for a while at that time. The underwriter called me and asked how long it'll be in the USA so they can assess the risk - I told them "not much longer than it takes to get my car back now that my transportation is now broken". It was fine.
That picture is from my apartment, they're both Oregon plated now. $235USD for the two BMW's and 4Runner.
Mr Rage, why no 4-cyl? Because they suck to drive, or you're seeing problems?

Rage lots of assumptions - the 335 is a 6 with turbo(s) = Maintenance, the shop is a BMW only shop so I would imagine they have most of the tools needed.
87 you are correct with 09-11s generation my mechanic recommended
Yeah being in the BMW and testing everything out you realize that what you have is still pretty nice...compared to most sub 20K cars out there.
That M3 looks fantastic

When I impulse bought my S4, I was 90% set on the e92 m3...like I was going to get it the next day. Also a great contender and if you up your budget it would probably be the best replacement for you.
But because I daily the car I felt the S4 was the better fit for me and I kind of like the more subtle look of the S4. The e9x m3 is already a bit of a boy racerish car, still awesome though. If I had found a 4 door m3 in the specs I wanted then I would've gone that way over the s4, but those are hard to come by. Mostly coupes out there and I am not a fan.

Thought the 335 was a turd reliability wise.
BMW straight 6s are as reliable as Honda, at least that was my experience with my E36 m3.

Carbon build up is with any DI vehicle, imagine how bad some of the non-luxury brand cars that don't specify premium fuel. Given how many turbo BMWs there are on the road, we surprisingly don't replace turbos that often.
Issues happen with most cars, but its not like its "harder" to work on for "maintenance".

For a non daily, low mile vehicle absolutely the M3 wins. It does what it's supposed to do better than the S4. The S4 is more of the civilized compromise vehicle (still a ton of fun and easy af to drive hard).
As far as 4 vs 2 door, I feel the German made sport car segment should be repped in sedan form only. sport sedans, the proportions seem to work better, but this is of course just personal opinion.
BTW, on your M3 is the seat off center to the steering wheel? I heard that's still the case (it was in my e36 m3) and it drove me insane (partially why I sold the car ).

Also the Wastegates are known to go.
Rage all these parts cost money and because it's BMW it's more than average. I would be unhappy if every year I had to sink 3gs in a car to keep it going because "parts fail" I have no interest in a BMW turbo car...even though the 335 tempts me bigtime
Yes a M3 or S4 would be ideal, I have yet to drive either. I like the M3 more cause it's NA V8 but again BMW shit the bed with some of the oversights...Rod Bearing / Throttle Actuators / Budget brakes..I'm sure there is more but that is all that I am aware of. With a M3 I would expect everything to built to the highest standard - if I buy one I think the experience might be spoiled a bit because I would always be worried it would grenade.
I haven't heard of similar problems for the S4 - if anyone is aware please share.
I may hold onto my car for a bit longer to justify getting into one of the above cars

S4 is a solid choice!
I've heard about this seat off center thing with the M2 and you're saying yours too. Mine... it just might be. I was going to say no until I saw the left bolster and not the right.

hard to find high mileage reviews on the 3.0T because the DIY world is very tiny for these cars. On the forums almost everyone is a wallet mechanic. When I did my suspension last week I had to watch youtube vids in german to get the hang of it since there aren't many write ups that are even half decent.
Considering the motor is used in the Q7, A7, etc I'd go on to say that they are pretty reliable for what they are. The auto trannies are known to have issues though (mine is a 6 speed manual).
In general for your next car go NA v8 or supercharged V6.
I can't stand the power delivery on turbo cars, the twin turbo ones are decent, but still the power isn't where you want it (at least where I want it). I generally get pretty disappointed with that, I miss analog power delivery, the M3 and S4 are great at that relative something like a 335. I love the overall driving experience of the S4, won't be as raw as the 540, but it's really good for modern day standards.

RB issues are overblown. Plenty of high mileage examples. As far as throttle actuators go. It is what it is, the gears/motor just wear out over time. Budget brakes? They work ok with better fluid and pads, but why do you care unless you plan to track it?
I always find it funny when ppl complain about brakes when the car is street driven.
or some media outlets over exaggerate the situation. Last week on ABC, there was some report about 54 cases of BMW's catching fire while parked.
Turns out, the cases span 15 years of BMWs, and all vary from 80,000 miles to 200,000 miles. They try to imply that something is wrong with them. 54 cars out of 4.5 million BMWs on the road (given the span of 15 years of models).

like fieros lol.
a few 84's caught fire...of course that's all you 'heard' of them until they ended in '88 thanks to media and hype/thru the grapevine (non internet days). yet way more camaros caught fire over the years, but there were more produced of course.
shit even the ferrari 458, quite a few lit up (and u only heard about 1-2 of them), but it was more than that. and they had to countermeasure stupid fast for it lol.

Rage I agree - used is a gamble for sure especially anything that is performance oriented without a service history. I'll call you and request all those parts at once
Yeah I know I would never track a car...so as long at the car stops I could care less but when they are building a track style car you think they would pay more attention to the stopping area.
I'm sure the RB issue is overblown but either way I'm sure I would be sending my oil out for analysis every year.
Risky that S4 looks great and nice job on the 6 speed. Please do the Stage 1 tune - everything I've read says it really wakes the car up. I haven't driven many turbo cars but the STI did feel fast when it came on but there was that wait and when it finally comes in you have to switch gears...reminds me of the VTEC...man I still miss that B16A2 screaming.
Watching vids in German shows the dedication to improving the ride. Luckily for me I can find plenty of vids for my project truck. 78 GMC short box stepside...I'm halfway through installing a 4/6 drop kit, gonna start the rear tonight.

Nailed it. B8 S4 is superb for modern day standards. It's a brilliant car and can be as dynamic as you wish - as long as you go ham with the alignment. I got that pig to drive real nice on the track - and stop real nice too (with stoptechs XD).
Motor could sound nicer though. It makes a very boring sound. Exhaust sounds nice. With a tune (Risky - you should do it), you unlock a lot of magic. The stock tune bleeds boost above 3k RPM. A tune keeps boost on, and optimizes fuel maps and spark maps. We're not talking about upping boost beyond what the motor was designed for here - we're talking about keeping the boost it was designed to work with to begin with. And with a stage 1 tune, it keeps up with an RS5 in the 1/4. Very fast, tons of torque. Transforms the car. It's nuts. S4 is the 1 car that does everything well - if that's what you're looking for.
Just buy it in a manual, and with the sport diff. The rear diff is magic. The motor is robust as hell (mine was over-revved...as me why!), and later on had a tune on it. No problems. Motors with larger pulleys and stock internals survive season(s) of racing without rebuilds. It's solid.

Ok I'll bite. Pedal offsets basically ended after 993. It was much improved with the 996 and with the 997 the only ppl that have complained about offset pedals are RHD owners. My M3 was barely noticeable with the off Centre seat, but the M2 is a fucking joke with it being off centre and crooked.

I agree with proportions working better on sedans, especially with the beefier fenders.
Didn't even notice the off centering.
I guess I am not OCD enough or everything else just makes up for it.

Yeah I can't believe the oil change intervals 24K is nuts
I tried the G37 and althought the 6 speed felt nice and tight and the steering was great the power delivery was it's downfall. On the test drive I slipped the clutch out and floored it and it took a second to respond...ruined it. Also the car felt like had to drive the hell out of it to feel like it's moving...again this was a used example so you never know what kind of condition the car was in.
Yeah keeping the E39 going for a bit sounds like a good idea...I've really been wanting to upgrade the diff might have to do that after a E60 shifter upgrade.

Where the 911 requires you adjusting your entire lower body towards the center.Yet no one complains about it. I find it to be more awkward than any bmw. Part of the charm though imo.
FWIW for my E91, i have to do exactly this. I adjust my body to line up with the center line of the controls. It is VERY off on the E9x. Off enough that I drive touching the left seat side bolster only.
That's due to your gangster lean foo!

I've considered it, but won't feel pure. lipstick on a pig thing....basically 911 all the tings.
S2k with a hardtop is not that bad. It's only an extra 40 lbs.(unless you are planning to use it as a dedicated track car where every ounce matters) plus it gives the feeling of a bit more headroom (and a bit more visibility doing the shoulder check on lane changes because the rear glass wraps around).
I used to winter drive my s2k - so I have an OEM HT -- I put it on last winter before I stored it, if you haven't sat in one with HT on, let me know - can jump in mine before I take it off for the summer.

S2K is like the unicorn vehicle for me, but i simply don't like convertibles, it's not a pure vehicle by my own made up definition.
it's like when OEM's make coupes from 4 door platforms, rarely do they ever make the coupe look as good as the sedan when the intent was always 4 door proportions.
New 4 series, new C class coupe, accord coupe, (insert other coupe variant) all look like shit compared to the 4 door version. The a5 kinda nailed it, but the rest are shit.
basically something something something, OCD things

Come to think of it the new C coupe looks good, the prior gen was a total fail.

Speaking of coupes, i think the mustang coupe is really well done. Not a car i would ever buy, but ford did a great job with the proportions and making a 'pure' coupe out of that platform (obvi the intent was always coupe hence why proportions are on point).
