Just bought my second home, a semi in Bramladesh. Looking to set up a projector and screen in the basement. Previous owner's had already ran cables for their projector, and had ceiling hooks for their screen by the far wall (where the couch is in pics). Don't mind the orange sherbet walls, that's at the very top of my to-do list lol.

It's around 12 feet from the wall to where the projector would be mounted. And an additional foot behind, from the couch viewing point. Windows would be blacked out, leaving the basement pitch black. Desired screen size would be 100-120". Going to be used for watching a lot of Sports/Boxing/UFC, as well as lots of online gaming (COD/NBA 2K).

For some fucked up reason, the window frames for the basement windows drop down so low, it eats up wall real estate. I had read up on diy painted screens, but only an option if I redo that section of the wall and re-frame the window like a normal basement window. Another idea was to purchase a screen, have it fixed to some plywood and just mount it on the wall, covering half of the window opening (not aesthetically appealing). Or to hang a screen just like the previous owners did.

I've done the prelim readings and research on some projector forums, and it's helpful. But wanted to hear from actual people here on their setups. Have a "best bang for your buck" type of a budget, which I guess limits my options some more. But open to any suggestions/tips/ideas on what equipment to use, and how to utilize the space accordingly for the setup.

That seems like an awfully close viewing distance for 100-120"

Yea it might be 12 feet to where the couch would be. But I keep seeing setups with roughly the same viewing distance, so I figured it would be ok.

Ahahaha tell me about it. They even had matching orange stools!

I was hoping to spend less than $1000 on the projector, and still unsure of what to do screen wise.

for 1000 bucks i did an epson 2040 and a cheapo electric dropdown screen from ebay. just gotta really take care with your placement as the cheaper projectors wont have lens shift and you want to avoid keystone correction at all costs. Welcome to the wonderful world of projector offsets and throw distance calculators!

Good place to start is here, you can read reviews, see if your projector can do lens shift etc. Use the calculator below to see what the output will be for the distance you chose for your projector

http://www.projectorcentral.com/

http://www.projectorcentral.com/projection-calculator-pro.cfm

Here is my 100" constant image height screen (108" diagonal screen), setup for viewing at a distance of 12'. Screen is a motorized pull down, tab tensioned and acoustically transparent (speakers behind the screen)

i just did an install for a 120" projector , motorized screen, receiver, speakers, and it all works well with a harmony remote. easy to do man. we can do it in a couple hours.

online gaming will have input lag. i cant even use my tv for SFV (cuz hardcore geek). but if you are used to playing COD on a TV and not a fast monitor, then projector should be ok.

ps remove chandelier

Simon, one of the reasons I got a 2040 (other than being cheap as dirt) is the significantly reduced input lag compared to some other units. (I think it's like 20ms).

Would you consider that still too high for hardcore gaming?

to be somewhat competitive i like being in the 10ms range. my gaming monitor is at 10ms input, 2ms GtG. then again i only play SFV lol.

but if you like big gaming on a projector the 10ms difference it negligible to the amount of fun you get. especially when you play when friends and family are over. everyone will be on par anyway.

the 2040 is prob best bang for buck. i see it on the epson website refurbushed for $520

https://epson.ca/Clearance-Centre/Home-E.../p/V11H707020-N

24ms input lag isnt bad. no lens shift but whatever. its a good all around projector for the price.

did you see LG's new 1mm thin OLED TV? Flexible and all. Bigger of course than the 18" demo one they showed at CES Jan 2016.

not far from release as well apparently. nice.

I wish I had the time to watch tv, nonetheless play a game, to warrant buying a new tv/projector/70". I might catch the odd Seinfeld, Big Bang Theory or other rerun and then pass out \:\(

Same. Since the kid it's only cartoons in the morning and maybe the odd cartoons during dinner other than that I have no real time to watch tv let alone enjoy some movies on a projector lol. We do some once in awhile for clients and besides the large screen I really don't prefer them over a nice tv

Yes.

One small benefit of a retractable screen is you can roll it up to preserve some decor, for example if your viewing spot is over a fireplace or smthg.

But basically ya, it's the cheapest way to get a 120" viewing area in 1080p or 4k.

In my case its control 4 so I just use a driver to link the actions on on my system to key words with Amazon. Example I have the word "good morning" on Amazon so when I say Alexa good morning it fires off that keyword good morning to control4 and the driver I use with control4 sees that's one of the keywords I programmed in and I have linked it to macros which fire off a bunch of commands like turn on kitchen light and turn on the cartoons so I can just yell out while walking down the stairs And Alexa has the TV ready for my son in the morning.

You can also do it per individual device which it was originally designed to do. In that scenario Alexa scans your wifi for compatible devices And learns them in them you can talk directly to Alexa who will control them however you want. She also has a ton of apps you can load on her and play games And do recipes etc it's actually pretty amazing

The one thing I can't wait to try is the integration with driver !edit center so I can control my audio and video library by voice

I'm running the Epson 2040 and everyone who sees it is impressed with the image quality.

Not sure if you saw my projector screen thread.
http://forums.clubsi.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Main/363828/Number/8807577#Post8807577

I bought this screen material from Amazon. It was $88 when I bought it. Looks like it went up in price
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00MJBMTG6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Used this for the mount
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B010MHT0Q0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'd consider my setup to be pretty low budget but I'm more than happy with it.

^^^ hey nice setup! and nice thread, i didnt see that. i like what you did with the screen material! good job man.

only suggestion is get some white corrugate tubing to hide the black wires on your projector. it will blend in with the projector and mount.

Setup looks nice man. Leaning towards a similar screen setup due to my issues with my wall and window. How far is that from the couch? And how does that projector perform during live sports and possibly gaming (if you do game at all)?
