I am finally a manager! ....of a different company lol

Some of you know that I have worked in the Hyundai parts dept for quite a while, but my problem was that even though we owned the largest dealer group this side of the GTA, there was no way I was able to move up. My boss isn't leaving his position for at least another 10-15 years because he has it set. I did everything while he played on his phone all day, or cruised forums. I took care of the daily operations and bringing in business. He did a bit of paperwork.

We also got bought out about a year ago by Autoplanet, who own a few dealers in the GTA and up north. Since then the entire place has changed, it doesn't feel like a family anymore and I was constantly worried about my job. Mostly because on paper, I was expensive for my position. I was essentially making 2x what my position should pay, except there was a reason. I have 17 years in the business and I'm good at my job. My manager loved it because he essentially had to do nothing all day and collect a fat cheque on payday.

One of the Hyundai dealers that is only 5 minutes from my place got in touch and offered me the Parts Manager position because their manager isn't cutting it and their numbers are way low compared to where they should be. This doesn't concern me because the reason they are so low is that I took all of their business away haha. And the best part is, all of these shops will follow me so I will show an increase almost immediately.

My manager and his boss took me out on Friday for beers and food and both were super pumped to have me working there. I haven't even started there yet, but I already feel so much more respected and appreciated. I'm really excited to start this new position and I'm actually happy to go to work again. It's going to be hard as hell, but at least now I'm working for my recognition and not someone else who doesn't actually appreciate it.

Rant over!

C/N: Got a new jerb, I is a manager now!

Nope, they're still Performance/Autoplanet. I'm in the Falls at Autovalue Hyundai.

Gave my 2 weeks on Friday, received an email shortly after that my employment was no longer necessary and not to come back Monday. So I get a free paid vacation lol.

I figured my manager would be pissed, mostly because he has to work now, but man he is being so unprofessional about it. You'd think that he might be happy that I'm trying to further my career and put everything he taught me into play....NOPE! After I gave my notice he called the guy I'm replacing(he's going to be working for me) to offer him my job. Then when that didn't work he called the other counter guy and offered it to him. Both said fuck no. He called them from work, while they were on the counter! He even messaged my ex-wife to see if she knew someone because he has the same last name as her...who does that?! Especially not even an hour after I give my notice.

My manager was PISSED and called my managers boss and reamed him out. It's one thing if you call them on their cell after hours...but on the company phone while they're working!?

I was suppose to start the 26th, but now I'm starting this Monday since I have some free time haha.

Honestly, the moment I walked out of that place it was like a weight had been lifted. I've worked my ass off for that place, multiple 12hr days with no lunch/break during the week, working 6 days a week for the last 4 years...and all for nothing to them. But at least doing everything I have in the last decade set me up to take this position and feel comfortable doing it.

Wow talk about not handling it well .... at all! Not very professional at all. Typically companies will walk someone out who has given notice if they feel their last 2 weeks could have a negative impact on their business. What do you think was their concern? Obtaining client info? Or was it plain old immaturity on his part?

I'm not sure how its seen from a legal stand point, but if you start your new job during your 2 weeks notice period, is your old company still obligated to pay you? Is it better to take the 2 weeks vacation?

I think it was both actually. Conflict of interest and he was pissed. Yeah I was scheduled to work, they told me not to so I'm owed the 2 weeks. Plus the new place wants me to start asap and so do I.

They owe you the 2 weeks regardless as it was their choice to end early (which is common I've been walked out quite a few times when moving to a potential competitor - it's normal and should be no hard feelings). Your bosses reaction highlights his lack of true leadership and management skill - sounds like you made the right move.

I fully expected to be walked out. I'm going to our closest competitor. I didn't think that someone I considered a friend would act like that though. Really shows his character. I know that he's afraid that I'm going to take all of the business with me, because even he knows that they dealt with us because of me. He's afraid that I'm going to make him look bad.

I was a little unsure of the move, but after his reaction I know I made the right decision.

That's a great perspective on it.... Yeah, reading this, doesn't make me miss dealership life. Over 60 hours a week - totally messed up my work/life balance. And if that's the norm for that particular dealership, nobody thinks of it as dedication, but more-so an expectation. Fuck them.

Good luck in the new role, jeffe!

I find it's bad when you inherit a bunch of turds, if you built them up from the ground up it's a much better experience (which happens rarely).

The people I have under me are actually really good, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue...but everyone is replaceable if they can't meet my standards. I really think that with the people in place already I can turn that place around in no time.

I spent the morning/afternoon visiting shops and talking to friends, every single place is following me. They all said that the only reason they dealt with my old place was because of me. So in a matter of 4 hours I have practically already doubled business there. The one nice thing about the dealership industry here is that it is so condensed and I know everyone. Luckily I have built a reputation for myself and now it's speaking for itself.

Every single person I talked to said the same thing, they prefer to deal with me, they know how I operate and they will only do business with me from now on.

So, how long before you groom your protégé so you can have them do your job while you collect a paycheck while surfing forums?

Congrats! Nothing like leaving a tired old job and starting with a new, much more rewarding one!

Lol, not gonna happen. Well at least for a while, I have a lot of work ahead of me hah.

I'm so freakin' pumped to get to work. After my trip around the region yesterday it was like a huge confidence boost, hearing everyone complimenting me on my work all these years and recognizing the amount of time and effort I've put in. /feels good man pepe meme

Thanks man haha. Been in the industry for like 17 years now, and it's been a long ass time since I've been excited about working. I know that it isn't a 1%'er job, but it's all I know and I'm good at it haha.

I guess the big thing for me right now is the feeling of appreciation that I've never had before.

I guess it all comes down to the fact that I've never had to prove myself in a role like this. But getting the positive reinforcement from everyone(except my old boss... :P ) is helping me feel like I can do this and do it well. Time will tell, but I'm confident and pumped to get going and make changes.

It'll happen in time for sure. They have a great staff in place now and everyone is working for the same goal. Under the old ownership the place got a bad name, but it is getting better day by day and the new ownership is incredible. They basically re-staffed the place and got rid of all of the useless people.

It's still dealership life and isn't a glory job, it won't be fun every day, but in the end I am working to make a name for myself and get that place to where it should be. They are great with rewarding peoples efforts and really make you feel appreciated. The more money I make the company, the more I bring home, so I'm going to bust my ass to make that place as profitable as possible. My next goal is to end up in by bosses position and this place will allow me to do that.

I haven't been challenged at work in a long time...aside from working with 'challenged' people. This is going to be a huge challenge for me but I'm going into it with the right attitude and support.

I don't know your industry but do they not have some sort of non solicit clause if you go to a competitive dealership?

Ignorant question...

You are now a part manager right?
What makes one better than others, how does one gets more sales than the other?

It's not like you advertise and convince people to buy Hyundai parts.
Supporting local mechanic shops?

You are telling us how fucking awesome you are, but as long as a dealership doesn't piss me off, I am going to the most convenient location and only when I need the parts. lol

Not all dealerships charge the same prices for parts. And some are more inclined to give you a discount than others.

Accuracy, inventory management, general service(attitude, helpfulness etc...)

My shops know that when they come to me they are getting what they need right and the first time. I go above and beyond to make sure I'm getting what my shops need. Some guys may call a certain part one thing and someone else will call it another etc.. So I make sure we're on the same page. Other people assume what they're talking about and end up getting wrong parts, which in turn means a longer wait to get correct parts, which pisses the shop and their customer off.

And I'm not saying I'm not saying that I'm fucking awesome. Yes I am good at my job, but what I have mostly been getting across is how happy and excited and encouraged I feel now because of talking to the shops. Not bragging, because let's face it, my job doesn't mean shit to most of you guys so why would I brag? Just happy about the situation.

Of course. The majority of my sales are wholesale. Be it body shops or independent mechanics. As hard as it is to believe for most people, because they all have the 'big bad dealership' mentality, OEM parts tend to be cheaper than a lot of aftermarket stuff.

Also, when it comes to body repair stuff, we have programs in place to allow us to compete with aftermarket suppliers. OEM stuff will always have a better fit and finish than aftermarket. Bodyshops prefer to use OEM as often as they can. It's the insurance companies that limit them to aftermarket.

This is so very true

So day one complete and no one cried! Especially me! \:D

I have so much work ahead of me. The parts dept there is such a mess, definitely not what I'm used to and definitely going to change. Day one I got thrown in to cleaning up a huge mess of a bay/storage area. Was told it needed to be done by the end of the week..already done! Something they have been pushing to get done for months. Taught my employees quite a few things already and they all seem eager to learn.

Had a really good talk with my friend that I replaced, made sure that he was comfortable with everything and reassured him that I'm there to work with him to make the place better. I know that his ego is a little bruised right now, but he also realizes just how much more I know in the department than he ever will. And I'm not patting myself on the back about that, I just have the experience that he doesn't.

All in all it was a good day. Still a little overwhelmed by it all, but that's fading fast. I have set myself up a little plan of action to take care of everything I want changed, so now it's just getting it all done.

Thanks man, I'm loving it so far.

So! a week and a half in now and what a change. I actually love going to work again. I've been in every day from 7-5 and only took 2 or 3 20 minute coffee run/lunch breaks..and I'm not complaining one bit!

It feels great putting the time in because I'm already seeing results. Had another managers meeting today and my department was the only one that showed a change from the last meeting. Already seeing an increase in GP and have already been getting calls from the body shops I brought with me. It is going to take me a long time to get the department where I want it to be, both in revenue and efficiency, but I can already see the changes I've made take effect.

Apparently I've surprised the shit out of our GM because I'm actually active in the meetings and I'm not putting up with anyones shit lol. Everyone else was a push over and would just do what they're told even if it doesn't work or is inefficient, I on the other hand put up a fight and prove my point. And I'm already showing that I actually know what I'm talking about.

In the short time I have been there I have already accomplished more than the last 3 Parts Managers combined.

Over all I am extremely happy that I made the decision to leave Performance.
