I recently took a road trip down to Florida. It was my first time driving down (as an adult, we did it as kids a few times. Side note: man, things were different then. I remember my dad removing the back seats of the van we had rented and laying down a thin mattress. Us kids were sprawled out on the floor the whole ride. F*ck seatbelts and car seats!).
Anyway, one thing I hate doing when paying for gas is going inside to pay. I prefer to pay at the pump. Well all the gas stations in the US require you to enter your 5-digit billing zipcode as a form of security/fraud-prevention. This forced me to have to go inside and pay each time. Even paying inside, I would be asked for my postal code. After spending 2 weeks in Florida, it wasn't until the drive back that one attendant told me to use the 3 digits from my postal code + "00". Sure enough that worked! After telling them I'm Canadian, this is what attendants were doing when I paid inside. Why couldn't they just tell me that's all I had to do?
Its also as if credit cards with smart chips don't exist in Florida. I've been to many other cities in the U.S. but in Florida the only place that was able to support credit card chip technology was Walmart. Welcome to 2016! Actually NONE of the gas stations I stopped at on my drive there and back, had chip support. I had to swipe it each time.
There was also a time when my wife was asked for ID for her credit card purchase of $23 at a major chain store Maybe if they supported chip technology they wouldn't need to ask for ID for a measly $23.

The US is about 10-15 years behind everyone else. Fraud was increasing huge there cause other countries moves to chip, and fraudsters hitting the US since they were slow to move. It'll take a number of years before it becomes the norm there. We were in Rochester a few weeks back, and there was a mishmash of magstripe, chip, and contactless.

Just had lunch at a subway in Detroit and used my tap to pay, employee was baffled. I don't think they have cards with tap, but units that have apple pay can accept tap.

Chip and sign is better than magstripe, but nowhere near as secure as PIN. It is extremely expensive for a bank to build PIN capability, and with the US bank market so fragmented by having small banks, it doesn't make sense for them to build it.
