What are the widest tires you can put on an 07 Civic SI Sedan in the rear and what offset would I need to have in a new 17 or 18" wheel to achieve the widest tire?

I don't mind a little tire hanging past the fenders either.

Would there be anything negative about going wide in the back?

If it's utterly stupid...go ahead and tell this noob it is

Thanks,

Ray

Every tire is different so it is hard to tell.
tirerack.com will show you every tire and wheel that is known to fit the Si that they stock.
I put the stock size on mine since I enjoy the feedback the stock size gives even though I didn't opt for the same tire manufacturer.
I heard 235-245 was the widest but you might have to do some fender mods to prevent rubbing depending on tire manufacturer/rim size/off set/ & thread.
I don't think the fronts would be able to go 245 but I could be wrong.

Sorry this probably didn't help as much but I would stick with 225/40/18 for 18" and 225/45/17 for 17" sizes.

I stuck with 215/45/17 A/S stock size on 17x7 Enkies.
When I go for some summer wheels I will most likely go with 225/40/18.

I am interested in this as well. I was thinking of going to 225's on the stock 07 si sedan wheels next time I need tires...which hopefully won't be for awhile. 3-4 vehicles ago I had a 1984 Celica GTS that I took up to 245's on the stock wheels, I think they were originally 225's ... so 215 to 225 is probably pretty workable, BUT the profile is my concern the...Celica GTS stock where 225/60-14 ... so there was a good bit more sidewall (60's vs. 45's) to work with... any other thoughts or folks taken 45 profile tires up... plus one, plus two?

Its a give and take

The lower the sidewall number you gain something and loose something.
You gain better handling since your getting less sway, but then again you loose ride quality since if you thought having 45 series was bad and you went down even more your going to feel every little bump and crack in the road.

If you can afford it buy a summer set and a winter set.
I do that for most of my vehicles.

245's will fit but things are starting to get a little snug at that point. If you wanted to roll the fenders or add a flare you could go wider but it's not really worth it for most people. Stick with the stock offset for the 245's if you start looking at lower offsets and wide tiers you will need to roll the fenders.

This is really going to show my noobiness

Just to make sure we are on the same page. I'm not looking to increase the diameter of the tire but the tread width...so exactly what number determines how wide a tire is. I'm use to truck tires and this is my first passenger vehicle ever. With truck tires they tell you how tall and wide they are in inches at least they do with the bigger tires.

Sorry for being too much of a redneck and not enough of a gear head

Thanks,

Stock tires: 215 is the tread width in millimeters. 45 is the aspect ratio or how tall the sidewall is(45% of 215 = 96.75mm). 17 is of course the rim diameter in inches. The stock rim width will take up to a 245mm wide tire. When you start widening the offset there is more of a chance they'll rub the fender lip. You should be able to run 17" or 18" with that wide of a tire. Anywhere from a 40 to 45 offset should work, but you might need spacers on a 45. IMO if you are looking for wider I would get a 17x8 wheel with a 42 offset and throw some 235/45 tires on them. But that's just me.

Thanks!!!! That taught me alot.

If I go with the 17x8, 42 offset wheels and 235/45 tires in the rear will it change the handling of the car that much?

Thanks!

That is really determined by the tire and driving you intend on doing with it. My old 205/50/15 Falken Azenis handled better than the stock all seasons on the Si. If you get another all season tire and never push it you would probably never notice the difference between the two. If you do enjoy pushing the car 20mm more tread is a hell of alot more meat to the ground. Not to mention another inch of rim to give the contact patch more surface area. Are you driving the car year round? Are you willing to switch back to the stock wheels in winter(assuming you live somewhere it snows)? If you are then get a sticky summer tire and push the limits!

FYI here is a good place to go for tire height/per wheel.

Just remember that these are general sizes, each tire manufacturer will have different tires sizes even though they might be the same from another manufacturer but you get the general ideal.
