I don't know anything about this. My observations/speculation:

You can work out "easy" in a small/medium calorie deficit

It's pretty tough to workout at all in a 'large' calorie deficit

It's pretty tough to workout 'hard' in a small/medium calorie deficit

Is this true? Like for instance if one wanted to do a "hard" 8/10+ effort [say HR zone 4] for like an hour or something you probably can't do that in a calorie deficit /if improperly fueled.

Does this seem accurate? Or is this just me?

You can do it, you're just not going to have a really great or pleasurable experience very often.

I do most of my workouts on an empty stomach after not eating for 12 hours, and it's rare that so feel like shit, but if I'm trying to shed weight and am operating on a defecit, most of those runs feel like hell.

Depends on when exercise is done. I can get away with a couple hard workouts a week by upping on those respective days. But the discomfort from a strong deficit will hit you regardless, whether during the workout or sometime afterwards.

Good quality calories can help minimize lethargy and other side effects.

This is why people carb cycle.

We have 1 cheat meal a week. Last week we had 2 because the wife was down in the dumps.

We've been "dieting" (I hate that term) for maybe 6-7 weeks.

Kudos to those of you who can work out effectively on less food/diets.

I can barely function in general if I skip meals/lower intake.

For most, I would think it's more about finding a balance between enough vs. too much. I don't go below 1700 on regular days, or 2000 with hard exercise. Though I freely admit I can't run around doing shakes & burgers while maintaining a deficit lol.

I'm willing to admit I'm just a huge pussy. Any 8/10+ effort for say an hour and a half or longer and if I'm not eating properly I'm probably having a mental breakdown at some point during it.

Running sucks a lot when you are trying to get faster dude. Most of my long runs I swear I'm not running again at some point. 10x3min at 5k pace? Fuck everyone and everything during that workout. But on some lever you have to enjoy that or its not worth it.

I don't mind working hard: I just can't do it in a calorie deficit reliably. I'd have a better shot at surviving track intervals underfueled just because the duration is only going to be like a ~40m workout max.

I don't know how to be more miserable than doing a pace run at like goal HMP for 8-10 miles underfueled. If it gets any worse than that I just need to stick to hobby jogging.

Take a week off. Don't go nuts, but eat normally for a week.

I would recommend just eating clean while taking in 1 gram of protien per lbs of body weight to not lose muscle and do carb cycling such as 100 grams of carb for 3 days, 1 day of 250, 4 days of 100, 2 days of 250 and repeat. If you eat really clean you will have a hard time just taking in enough food to meet those requirments. Never go below 1500 caloris a day as a male. Also find out what you resting metobolic rate is as this is thd calories your body burns naturally with no exercise. Then you can make calorie adjustments from there while ensuring you follow the carb cycling and the weight shreds off.
