I'm thinking of getting a CUV next (Compact SUV).

I just need more room and AWD. Got caught on a ski hill in Quebec where I couldn't climb the hill to the chalet. So no more FWD, i want AWD. I also need more room to put my S-works stumpjumper in. My last bike was stolen right off the bike rack. The G/F now has a MTB as well so a larger luggage compartment is needed.

Most of the usage will be on-road but every so often I'll need to climb snow covered gravel roads going up mountains.

My list is pretty long right now and i need to narrow it down. But I don't know a lot about CUVs.

List:
- Honda CRV touring
- Hyundai Tucson Ultimate or Santa-fe sport 2.0T limited
- Ford Escape titanium or Edge titanium
- Nissan rogue
- Mazda CX-5

Luxury CUVs, but i don't really care about the brands or luxury unless they're really better than those above.

- Lexus NX
- Acura RDX
- Mercedes GLK
- BMW X3
- Audi Q5. I'm not sure I'd want an audi right now considering what's happening to the VW group right now.
- Range Rover Evoque. Cute but may be to "feminin". Also heard they have tons of problems.

So far I'm leaning towards the CRV the most but i haven't taken a good look at a lot of the others on the list.

Not sure if I can take OP seriously after his last post about "doing something" and his name.
Here he lists every single CUV ranged from $20k to 60k.

I don't really care that much about the over $50K CUVs but if they're waaaaay better in every way possible, then yes, i would dish out the extra bucks. I thought i already mentioned that.

One reason I'm asking for help is because I'm trying to quickly narrow down the list in the hopes of getting a deal on an outgoing 2015 model before the 2016s get here. Well, except for the Tucson which is a 2016 but that redesign is really nice and I wouldn't want a 2015 model.

If you doubt my sincerity, that's ok, but i'd prefer you contribute something constructive to this thread rather than trying to derail it.

Thanks

Nice. Didn't even think about that one. But except for the luxury, is it really any better than the Escape?

I'm looking at it on the website and it seems to be pretty much in line with what i need right now. I'm sure 2 MTBs fit in that trunk... no problem!

You'd get really good deasl from 2015 Lincoln MKX and 2015 Lexus RX350.
Both are redesigned for 2016 and they want to get rid of old stocks.
The 2016 MKX is on sale now and the RX is coming soon.

i think they're both a bit too big. If I were to check out Lincoln or Lexus, the MKC and NX would probably be what suits me most.

But you got me thinking. If i'm putting the CRV and Tucson in my list, maybe the RAV4 too?

Wow... narrowing down this list is going to be hard.

Yeah it really is - it's based off the escape but it's more than just bolting on some parts. Seen a few in real life on the roads and they catch my eye - the shape is better than the escape for sure

This is from what I hear though but I haven't done a ton of research into it. It should also have sync3 which is pretty sweet from what I've seen

As with anything to see the real difference you need to go with the top end with the best drivetrajn

I really like - Honda CRV touring and Hyundai Santa-fe sport 2.0T limited. They both are solid CUV.

Im pretty happy with my most recent purchase.

Looked at a Santa Fe and Tucson. Santa Fe is pushing time for a redesign and the Tucson was pretty nice, but I didnt like the interior and it was kinda lackluster to drive. Sis in laws has a new CX5 and she really likes it. Handles and drives real nice for a small CUV.

Luxury ones the RDX is a clear winner for me. The NX lacks alot of things that are standard or not available with the RDX. The others were all pretty expensive when optioned up.

Any specific questions about the RDX Id be happy to answer.

Rdx is good bang for the buck, just check out which trim level fits your budget and need. Lexus as usual seems to sell very well.

We have a 15 crv EX, wife loves it, great vehicle. Both of these will have high residual value if u ever plan for trade in. Hyundai has done a nice job on their units, definitely a contender these days. Toyota same as crv. But uglier haha.

The Ford edge seems decent and sells very well. Worth a look.

Mazda seems to do ok and sell well for what it is, we drove it nd most guys liked it. not a fan of the Nissan.

Lincoln is something different to consider but eiiihh.

what does the current situation with VW have to do with whether or not you want a Q5?

do you no longer trust the brand? and it's technologies?

How's the engine/transmision on the RDX? A 3.5L V6 is going to have quite a bit of power but is it smooth and not too bad on gas? Does it have low RPM vibration or roughness? Some older Acuras with V6 and automatics had drivetrain noises and other issues.

I like the price vs equipment of the Tech model. The trend is mostly towards turbo 4 bangers in CUVs so i'm not too sure about a V6.

This review is ok but not spectacular: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bakTec6q8JA

Since Audi/VW has taken a hell of a black eye, their entire range has been affected, or more accurately... their brand name is taking a hit. They're probably going to start offering incentives or be a lot more open to negotiation so they can get customers back. Problem is, the VW "crisis" isn't over so there may be a lot more incentive in the near future which I may not be willing to wait for. So unless I can get some price protection against near future drops, I'd hate to get a Q5 only to see it drop a few thousand in say... 3 months. There's just too much uncertainty right now.

Any info on this vibration issue I keep reading about? Something about the CVT when revving below 2500rpms. Did you notice this?

Ummm, the guy in the video gave it A+, A, A- and B+'s across the board, not sure what else you want?? lol 'just ok'? that's pretty good is it not? what did the guy rate other cars?

anyways, i've driven a few trims more than a few times, nice truck overall. i'd call it more an SUV now than CUV as it's big. has some minor pests here and there but overall it's a nice drive. new chassis and motor vs. the older acura models. they get better mileage out of a V6 than their 4-turbo lol, the old engine was a guzzler ugh.

Engine and trans is smooth on the RDX, it's good on gas if you don't have a lead foot. powerful v6, very quiet inside. there's a reason acura is killing the SUV sales right now.

I'm too sure about that last statement. The most common CUVs I see around are the CRV and Santa Fe. Maybe it's just because I'm looking for those but I rarely see RDX. I see more MDX though.

Ruled out GLK. rear seat is way too cramped and the trunk doesn't seem big enough for 2 MTBs.

That was one of the reviews that started to sell me on it. I also liked this one, although the cons he lists at the end I dont exactly agree with.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXhN8JVDyrQ

The 3.5/6at in the RDX combo is very smooth. More so then the 3.5GDI/9at in my TLX I think. The GDI is more powerful but its a tad bit noisier and the 9at has had complaints that hunts through the gears. I drive in manual mode most of the time so it doesnt bother me. Cant be the reliability of a NA either and prob less maintenance then a turbo too.

Ive never been an SUV owner, this being my first and I really like it. I drives like a tall car really, not sloppy like a truck or bigger SUV. I doenst feel large either. My wife and I both got used to its size real quick. Lots of glass area and its easy to see out of.

The technology/options, stereo, Acurawatch, space inside is all great. According the display, Im seeing about 8.5-9L/100km, so its prob close to 10 real world. Takes regular gas too.

Why not just get a CRV.
Having it in the list says you don't care about luxurious options.

What do you mean by "better"?
Do you want heated steering wheels?
0-60?
Large cargo space?
Reliability?

I'd start with narrowing down the choices by trying to fit the list of stuff you must put inside each vehicle (even loading on the rack, if applicable).

AND THE WINNER IS...

2016 Acura RDX Tech

Thank you Dumbass, Screamin and Titty spinkles for all your advice.

It came down to the RDX and the CRV. But coming from a civic Si, the CRV was just too slow. Don't get me wrong, I really liked a lot of things about it. It's just my driving style is a bit more about passing power, quickly merging into traffic and so on. I guess if I didn't try the 2.0T offerings, or the RDX, I probably would've picked the CRV.

The Tucson 1.6T was quickly dismissed. It has lots of cargo room but it's really weak. That 1.6 engine has got no guts so I don't really trust this thing to climb ski hills and such. The materials felt really cheap compared to the CRV.

The Ford Escape was a no from the start because it's really too small. The Edge, really too big!

The Toyota RAV4 just feels old. It's just recently redisgned and it's just too bland. Personal feeling I guess.

When I looked at the luxury brands, I dismissed the GLK because of the rear room (passenger space and trunk). The Audi was a pretty good pick, I liked that one too. The X3 was pretty nice as well, until I read reviews with people complaining about all sorts of quality issues. Especially that turboed engine. The Lexus NX is pretty, good size except for the trunk which probably won't accomodate 2 MTBs with 29" wheels.

The RDX was the winner based on my needs, my driving style and value. For the dollar, very few other CUVs came close. The Q5 and X3 are still ridiculousy over-priced.

I got a good offer for a 2016 RDX tech in silver with black leather. Now that I've decided, I'll have to sit down with the dealer and try to negotiate just a bit more and see if we can agree on pricing and perhaps a few accessories thrown in.

Anyway guys, thanks for your oppinions and comments, they really were helpful.

Good choice.

I looked at the NX too, but once you optioned it comparable to the RDX, it was $50k+. Same feelings about the Tucson, too slow and the interior materials were kinda cheapo. But for the price, it really had some advanced features for a Hyundai and I thought it looked great.

Anyway guys, thanks for your oppinions and comments, they really were helpful.

excellent choice - although be prepared for hatorade chewing your ass out w/ his anti acura remarks.

Just curious, what kind of discounting has Acura been willing to do for you so far?
