Because I have to be faster than Stickaz. ;\)

Don't mind the fact that I've gained like ten pounds this year and have hardly run. Or that I had hernia surgery yesterday so I don't really know when I get to start running again.

In any event, I'm signed up for the St. Jude's half in Memphis this December. I've run this course before. My half-marathon PR on a tougher course is 1:57:53. I think getting down under 1:50 should be doable if I put in the work (including speed work) and get my weight back where it should be. The arrival of fall temps will be huge for me as I don't tolerate the summer heat and humidity well when I run. Temps in the 40s or so on race day would be perfect as well.

I guess workout #1 was today - I walked to get my gyro for lunch instead of driving. About six blocks round trip.

In all seriousness it is good for me to have a race and a goal to get back into training. Hopefully I can get back to running in the next 2 to 3 weeks and we'll see what happens. Maybe I'll starve myself in the mean time to accelerate the weight loss.

No.

Doctor will tell me in two weeks. As of right now no strenuous exercise and no lifting over ten pounds. Walking is ok and encouraged.

Hehe take those 2 weeks off

(Just don't ask me for my excuses for failing to break 1:50 in 4 weeks)

I wish I couldn't say that holding a 8:20 pace isn't terrifying...
Ever increasing pain/misery jeebus...hitting your fitness capability in this distance sounds like an exercise in misery

I was running (leisurely) about, 2-3 weeks after hernia surgery. I bought a girdle since most of the pain was the skin bouncing where the incision was. Used it a couple times, then I was good.

Was your surgery open or laparoscopic? Mine was laparoscopic so I just have three small incisions at the level of my belly button.

Scopic. Dual hernia. The incisions on each side hurt the most.

Well that is not what I wanted to hear. He repaired one inguinal hernia on the left side but found an umbilical hernia near one of the ports and repaired that also. I had been diagnosed with that one years ago but it did t require treatment and I had forgotten about it.

In any event, the incisions are bothering me a bit more today than yesterday but none of it is really terrible. Hoping to be back to a decent activity level in 2-3 weeks.

Doctor says I have no restrictions after this weekend. This gives me 12 weeks to train for the half.

This will be ugly.

Slow 2 miles with the stroller yesterday. Hernia/abdomen/surgery site did not hurt at all.

Everything else did though, i.e. knees and back a little.

Will ease up the mileage this week and hit the gym. Shooting for a five miler next weekend.

Foam roll! And a touch of strength training.

Good to see you back at it.

Titled edited for reality - I never really expected to set out and hit an eight minute plus PR.

Went out for five miles today. First time in a while I've done anything that looked like a hill, and it showed. After a while when pushing up one of the hills, had some discomfort in the pelvis so backed off a bit. My Garmin died and I didn't take my phone, so thankfully no evidence of how I performed.

Plan is to run 6 next weekend with a couple of mid week runs and some strength training in between.

Hang in there man! 12 weeks means you have some time to ease into the distance right?

Got time to get in 15-20 miles/week? Get some good base miles in?

Eased off the running for about a week and a half. My knees are tolerating it less than usual. They have always been sore for a day or so after a run, but right now the soreness is lasting much longer.

Hitting the weights and riding my bike on the trainer (). Going to run this weekend and see what happens.

Right on track for my worst half ever

Update - well on my way to failure with ten days to go!

I did start to do a little running after my knees recovered, as well as some weight training. Not enough running, but some and was feeling like I might be able to ramp things up at the end and pull out an ok time.

Then I got sick. And have been sick for the last two weeks - persistent cough that turns into wheezing when I try to run. Going to the doctor this afternoon to see if I have bronchitis or pneumonia or lung cancer or HIV or whatever. Then I get on a plane tomorrow to spend five days at an all inclusive in Mexico which I'm sure will help me get over my disease and ready my balbi for the half.

My wife has done a lot more training than I have but also doesn't feel totally into it this time. We both blame our carrier monkey daughter and her pre-school.

We were signed up for a half when my wife found out she was pregnant. Her OB told her she could run 30 minutes and walk 15, rinse and repeat. We did that and our time was 2:15 or so which, for someone five months pregnant and walking a third of the time, wasn't too bad. Since I now look like I'm 5 months pregnant, this may be what we do.

CN: my vagina is especially red

PS: Will sign up for another half to redeem ourselves after this trainwreck.
