Anyone have experience with the custom peasant suits, such as Indochino?

Closest thing I got were custom shirts from Maxwell Tailors years ago, and thet fit pretty large... (That, and I probably lost some weight.)

Not a baller so I'm fitting my fat ass in cheap Zara suits just for the fit... But figure I might try 'custom' ...

What's the 'going rate' for peasant penguin suits? I think Indochino is $549...

Spier & Mackay starting $375 \:o

That's how it's done. you go straight to his shop and he'll size you up. and cup your balls too if you want.

seriously, yeah, you just got to his shop to get measured.

starts at 899, wool, full canvas.

i can do half canvas for cheaper. these are MTM prices. takes about 4 to 6 weeks

bespoke is available. those start at about 2k and goes up depending on the fabric. turnaround is about 10-12 weeks with a couple of fittings in between.

MTM is italian cloth, bespoke is mostly british with some zegna sprinkled in. goes from s100 to s130 for MTM. bespoke my super numbers range are about the same plus cashmere and angora available.

Custom is all about the last bit of chalk-up, don't ever be confused. You can spend a ton of bespoke details and get talked into fabrics and all sorts of other "rust proofing" but, I wager, whomever looking at this post is looking for something that fits in with the Canali (low end)/ Tom Ford (high end) crowd.

Two options:

Option 1. Afford a Canali or TF and lean hard on the Holt or HR tailors to do their job and turn up the fucking air conditioning. Demand they bring you a beer whilst they do so and absolutely ask for the assistant's phone number (they will, and she "will", trust me).

Option 2. This option is if you're not balling-out but want to not roll-the-dice that that 'bespoke' tailor you are meeting at the hotel/heard about/were sent a link to/is your friend's friend isn't going to leave you walking around with a suit that looks like you.....well, chose one of those options, frankly. This option has the following steps (used by yours truly when working in menswear for....Harold Raisen....and during articling when I was poor as hell - fuck law tuition:

1. Go to the Bay. A downtown location which stocks Zegna or Ted B. or whatever is your fancy in the 1K(ish) market of that line.
2. Make friends with one of the lonely suit guys.
3. Tell him to call you when your suit in your size goes 40% off. (Should be within a month or so). They're incentivised to do so.
4. Buy suit, have their tailors take in the cuffs, pants, for 30 bucks or so. (you might have to explain to them the current fashionable length).
5. Walk down the street to an old dog to chalk it up and tailor for the last ten yards (in Calgary or Toronto I can recommend).

Now you have a suit that will compete with the rest of the street at less than $700, compared to 2K or so(as well as a few extra bucks to buy that assistant dinner, drinks; she's probably fun).

Um. Yeah. \:\| I'm not in the Ballers Club. I have a lifetime membership in the Faux Ballers Club thank you very much.

Looking at the 'custom' dress shirt guys, doesn't seem like the 'convertible cuff' thing is common ... I kinda like it. (Maxwell Tailors have it... I have 3 old shirts with em... I wish they'd put 2 buttons on it doe...)

My type of 'bespoke' is more on the trend/styling front, such as contrasting thread colour, interior lining, notched lapel etc... (I claim no knowledge of wtf I'm speaking to ... heh.) Hidden pocket ala Limitless sounds neat doe...

Good idea re: The Bay's lonely suit guy lol.

My office wear is primarily more a blazer/suit jacket + dark denim ... So spending big bucks on a suit that includes the suit pants, while great for formal outings, is doubling my price unnecessarily ... (Even then, I can stroll in wearing a t-shirt, jeans, and runners no problem....)

I do want me a dope ass smoking jacket doe wut

This thread reminds me I need a new suit asap. Might have to pull a Jeff and buy off the rack and have it "tailored" since I am very short on time here (two weeks).

Lafora do you do tailoring on off the rack turds \:D ? Any recommendations on brands/where to buy? I've never done the Bay thing, are some suits easier to tailor than others (brand wise)? I also have one M2M suits from maxwells that I only wore once in my life because I hate the fit (from my wedding of all things ) I need to get that one sorted out too.

If you like Strellson suits they often have sample sales at discounted prices. I have 2 of their suits and am very happy with how they fit.

Don't understand OP.
Asking for suit, but doesn't want to spend good coin (understandable).
But then goes to say can wear t shirt to work. Generally wears blazer and jeans doe.

So why not just buy a blazer and wear chinos??? I am confused.

So lettuce discuss, where to buy off the rack suits (price points+fit).

I know my safe bet is an entry level $800 Hugo Boss suit, that usually fits me really well (to my liking, not sure about internet critics - don't care either) with minimal tailoring (hem/taper pant legs/bring in the jacket a bit/etc). Out the door I am still 1k all in, which I don't mind, but I want to try other options as well.

The bay, Zegna or Ted B, $600 on sale?
Strellson, where, price point?

The hugo boss I was referring to you can get at The Coop, which is a solid store imo.

I've had some stuff done at Caruso fine tailoring on Danforth as well, that was a bit of a hit or miss, still willing to give them a chance.

Some of the guys here wear trendy suits on the regular; about 3-4 days/week.

I'm not sure I'll be able to pull it off budget-wise ... That's probably 8-10 suits regularly rotating... (I have some pretty bad-fitting suits I've thrown to the back of the closet, and/or donated.) So, I'm in a rebuilding phase, and to cheap out (and leverage the dress code), I'll dress up/down a blazer/suit jacket as needed.

I'm still just a worker bee; ain't no corner office here...

I've never been a t-shirt/jeans kind of person; I need a collar somewhere...

So, I'm looking/asking for alternatives/ideals places to shop for suits. I'm not comfortable having some dude wait on me while I shop; just haven't gotten baller/douchey enough to enjoy it.

Snapper, SuitSupply looks decent ... I'm gonna go check em out...

Great suggestion, risky suit business inbound.

I've been wanting a blue suit like this for years, never got around to it: $429 CAD, not sure if total crap, but totally worth checking out.

You mean alterations?

I don't \:\)

sorry didn't read through the whole thing.

I don't really have a recommendation on RTW brands; but best bang for the buck right now south of 600 you're looking at suit supply. just stay away from department store brands (calvin klein, lauren ralph lauren and the likes).

if you have a higher budget, samuelsohn is a good bet, next up to that is canali. I won't do Zegna unless it's E. Zegna (Zegna soft, Z Zegna are both subpar in quality). Hugo Boss also falls in that category unfortunately.

if the brand isn't going to make / break the deal, by the time you spend the $$$ on a Canali, you could get some pretty nice stuff made for you already. Obviously we have someone else here who worked for HR who leans towards RTW brands w/ MTM option in those brands, but for me (and not because i'm in the biz), I have no qualms buying unbranded stuff but made with good cloth and known construction.

End of the day it's alla bout fit; so regardless of what you get, fit is king \:\)

If you wear slim fit pants, (and most pants nowadays in the cdn market are considered cut pretty slim), you can't wear them with a full break. A couple of decades ago when pants were a bit more of a relaxed cut (and i'm talking about cuff openings of probably 9" or more), you can go a half or full break and not have it look like it's messed up. The hem covers the top of the shoe, with one fold and the crease goes up unbroken all the way to your thighs.

Now because most pants have the ankle openings at 8.5" to 8" (or 16-17" in circ), any break that happens won't cover the shoe, it'll just pool on top of the shoe because there's no room for it to go with it being so narrow.

So a lot of guys who are used to wearing wider dress pants for off the shelf offerings are used to having at least half if not full break, then they come over to these pants that are cut to their form can't get used to pants that have zero break (ie it JUST touches the top of the shoe when standing); all want it longer and poof when they see it lengthened they almost always go back (maybe not the entire way, but want it shortened).

The break is probably one of the hardest thing to get right IMO. The fabric plays a big part in how it drapes. If you guys want the pants to "cover" the back, get uncuffed and when you hem it ask for a 3/8" slant on the hem. This way the back sits longer than the front so even if it was a no break or a quarter break you can be sure the back would cover part of the heel of the shoe.

make sure the sleeve length fits for suit supply suits; you do not want to do alterations on a sleeve with working buttonholes whether the fee for alteration is included or not. (and I think all SS suits are of that type)

samuelsohn's stuff comes with the sleeve unfinished, meaning it was meant for you to alter the sleeve first BEFORE putting in the buttonholes. I don't know if SS does this, but watch out for it.

dont' do it.

contrasting thread colour is such a fashion thing in a few years time your jacket is going to look dated as fuck.

stick with the basics, get the fit down, go nuts on the lining and that's about it. anything that's visible keep it toned down unless you have a wardrobe full of stuff where you DGAF about throwing stuff out every couple of years and those pieces you can get a bit more crazy with. For wardrobe cornerstones, less is more.
