You all probably saw my post in OT about our trip to France but Id like to post a few photos her for critique. I ended up snapping over 2,000 pics and uploaded 355 to a Flickr album:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/95474106@N02/sets/72157652768361414

Here are a number of my favorites. I was shooting in manual mode for almost every item uploaded. I believe the info is shown on the Flickr page.

i like some more than others but the best thing that I can say is to stay with it and keep shooting. Look at some people's pictures that are shooting the same types of things that you are (architecture, scenery) and study how they shoot and post edit.

for me, I studied nate's work along with chef's work (along with one other company ) to find out how I wanted my photos to appear to the viewer. I'm still somewhat off from a solid style but that's to be expected

Man that's a great set of vacation photos! A few there that I'd tweak to straighten out, or fix some skewing, The first I'd play with rotating a little clockwise, but you might lose too much. Then the one looking down the hall I'd skew a touch, along with the one after it of the guy in front of the tall yellow doors, same thing. The castle with the roses in front and the out of focus castle, the black and white castle above it with the straight on shot and the dirt path leading to it, the painter, straighten that a bit. The very last shot I'd open up the shadows a bit. Nice tone on the sky, if you can open up that bottom to get a little more detail it'd be nice. There's some great use of leading lines and composition, framing is good. You've got a good eye for the little scenes you encounter. Looks like a great trip!

Also - do you guys do anything special when creating a B&W photo? For some reason, I really enjoy the B&W chateau pics and those are straight from the camera just desaturated and slightly upped the contrast.

I use Nik Silver Efex, but you can get similarly great results with a Black and White adjustment layer or the Channel Mixer http://www.lightstalking.com/how-to-use-...d-white-images/

How does that give different results than simply desaturating a picture?

You're controlling how the image turns out. Desaturating is a rather poor way of doing a black and white, as it tends to be rather flat. The digital black and whites you see that knock your socks off are likely never going to be just desaturated. Rather then just letting colors turn into percentages of light to dark, you're controlling the importance of what is light and dark, where the contrast lies. It's like all editing, it's your personal taste and artistic preference, but especially with black and white since we don't see it naturally, you're calling back an emotion, how you felt when you saw it, and how you want your viewers to feel. It's not really a technical explanation of why it's better, but hopefully it makes some sense.

Ok, downloaded Lightroom and got to work doing some B&W tutorials and how to use Lightroom. Thoughts?
