Well, actually I went out in the beater Echo, got rear-ended when I was sitting at a light by a ditz in a 5000 lb Lexus SUV.
She was picking up a baseball hat off the back seat. I saw the back of her head as she was approaching, doing ~40 kmph or so.
I have whiplash and a concussion still, a week later.
Suprisingly, the Echo just needs a new back bumper - it held up pretty well. I have to fix the sheet metal behind the bumper, but I'm going to hang onto it.
I needed a tow vehicle anyway, and I could not STAND the look of the Titan I thought I was going to buy, so I got this.
F-150 XLT Supercrew 4x4, with the towing package, 5 litre, because I'm going to do the work myself and I wanted something less complicated and reliable.
It's a 2014. I didn't want the hassle of an aluminium body; they're more expensive to fix, if you need bodywork done.
They wanted to get rid of it, because they want to move the new models, so I negotiated a good chunk off, plus another $1000 off for my Costco membership, then a Ford employee discount, since the father of one of my friends used to work in Dearborn. Even he was surprised and called it a smoking deal ($18,500 less than list price).
So far, I really like it!

$18.5k off...damn that's insane.
It is a good deal but thats the truck market always at end of season they do big discounts. In this case the 2015 is totally different so they are unloading the previous stuff. Ford especially does insane volumes on the f150 in North America
My buddy did the same on his truck (also a 2014 f150). It's a pretty damn nice truck.

I have to fix the sheet metal behind the bumper, but I'm going to hang onto it. I'm confused as to what happened with the accident and insurance company Option 1. Insurance deemed the Echo a write off They paid you out You purchased it back from the insurance company and will fix it yourself You additionally bought a new truck Option 2.Insurance is going to fix the Echo You additionally bought a new truck Option 3.???
Insurance is public here, so it is a little different.
If I go through SGI and they inspect it, and the damage is more than 75% of book, it's a write-off. Then it's salvage and it would have to go through two inspections to get it back on the road.
If I throw a bumper on it myself, it's cheaper than the $3700 quote I got from a bodyshop, independent of SGI.
#3 profit.
P.S. #4, if this doesn't make sense, it's because I have a concussion - and I will explain better later.

Thanks guys. I should actually attend a get-together sometime so you know I exist.
I'll be driving out in the summer in this thing - I may tow my Daimler back. I could tow it to a meet, charge $50 for drives and pay for my gas money on the return trip

Ooo, you're not going to be happy.
The truck is $1200 a year to insure, $2 million liability.
I'm waiting for the salt to wash off the roads in Burlington, they'll road test it, work out the bugs and it's done. Thats still high, my X5 is less.
lives by the nuclear powerplant. dat's why.

This is true. I have had troubles with that. I added a turbo catch can off the VC to wick out moisture so it won't go into the intake tract.
My IACV kept rusting out.

I would kill to pay $1200/year on car insurance I think the majority averages pay anywere $1500/year or up

Doesn't work. My beater was the most expensive car to insure with the least amount of coverage. I am curious to know if the Volt is cheap on insurance. I am comparing the cost of ownership between a Golf TDI vs. Volt. PM me if you feel like telling me the truth, cost of ownership, hydro cost, etc I'll post a detailed rundown when I'm home. She has done 20,000kms and the lifetime fuel consumption is at 1.1L/100kms.

Not at a $100k lol.
I love the idea of a plug in car, but it's not for me.

I saw the $8500 government credit, it made that car so much more appealing if I were to buy a new DD
