I use a pair of 430exii flashes ($249 each) in Impact softboxes on impact stands (cant remember exact price, but dirt cheap) triggered remotely with Yongnuo 622c triggers (about $40 a piece). Can't get much cheaper than this...

Depends on what you want to light up.

I have 2 yongnuo flash guns ($70/each) that work great for simple lighting. I use the Yongnuo trigger set as well ($40-80).

I also have an alienbee B800 that I use for larger setups or when I need more light. I'd recommend getting the B1600 if you ever need to properly overpower any sunlight though.

Couple different light stands and umbrellas and that's it.

A 430exII and some alien bees (or white lightning if you can spend a few more~ same company ~ whatev ~ you get more by spending more) will go a long way...
