and will never do so again. Even if my life depended on it. So wednesday I went in for a Tonsilectamy. My tonsils were massive and were beginning to cause me all sorts of problems so I had them removed. I was recently diagnosed as Diabetic too which complicated things slighly but my surgery required one overnight stay.
What a nightmare it was. The surgery was at markham stoufville hospital. I stayed in the Intensive Care Unit so that my oxagen levels could be monitored as well as my blood sugar. The day staff was great. Lots of people around, and my requests were met relatively quickly. People generally cared about the patients or their jobs, either or, I was pretty well cared for. Night staff...yikes! thank God that there were no complications because I honestly think I would have died in there. Seamingly there was only 1 or two nurses around overnight. The one nurse that I did see clearly didn't know what she was doing and only came to check up on me every few hrs if that. My IV came out at one point in the night and she had to put in another one. It seamed to me like it was a chore for her AND that she had only done it a few times cuz she struggled to put in a new one. She even put it in my hand because she couldn't put it back in my wrist where the original one was. Really put me through some pain putting it in and it was way more cumbersome in my hand than in the wrist. And all this is happening in Intensive fucking care! what would it have been like if I were just in a general room!?!?!?!?!
In my entire life I've only ever spent 1 night in hospital...this surgery...and I vow to myself I'll never let it happen again. One thing I've learned is most definitely have someone with you! I was alone there and that was my story. Nobody is gonna look after you. I didn't sleep a wink and I was dead tired. I was supposed to be released the next day morning. the day dr. starts at 9am?!?!? wtf is up with that? anyway I say fine. I figure they are gonna want me outta here asap.....NOPE I waited till 11am to see the dr to discharge me. And that only happened because I started discharging myself. I was almost literally chained to that bed for over 12hrs. I just wanted to get up and out of there and go home. Every minute was excruciating and felt like days. So at like a few mins before 11 I decide "fuck this, I'm out of here" and start pulling off all the sticky things used for the machines. Obviously they all start going nuts and this one nurse strolls in like its no big deal. And she's like "what did you do" I said "i was supposed to be discharged at 9am, its 11 now. I can't take this anymore I'm getting up and I'm leaving" she says "no, i have to put them all back on you" i'm like "listen, I don't want to be difficult or be a jerk, but I have been chained to this bed all night with no concequences. There is no way your putting those things back on me, and no way I'm not leaving by 11am. I'm literally going crazy laying here" then she says that she will go get the dr. 3mins later he comes in and gives me my script and says I can go. Like....was that so difficult? Then I'm about to leave and they say that I have to go out in a wheel chair. so I waited another 15mins for the damn wheelchair when I could have just walked out. Fuck, what an ordeal.
Now I'm on recovery and it sucks too. The first few days I couldn't eat anything so my diet consisted of like 7 different pills. The surgon before hand said that recovery will be 2 weeks but I figured he was just covering his ass and that I'd be good a few days later. Nope. I'm likely gonna need the full two weeks. I can't eat and I can't sleep. A recipe for total disaster. The first few days I felt like a bag of shit. I'm on day 4 post-op and I'm starting to be able to eat and drink. Still can't sleep much and my mouth/throat is full of scabbed skin that tastes disgusting. Stitches are poking me too now as swelling is going down and making me gag. I'm gonna barf soon and everything is gonna be torn out and I'll be back to square one again. Thats my worst nightmare as I would rather be dead than go back to hospital. Nights are long and boring. I don't want to do this anymore. I am regretting doing this. Should have just dealt with the BS of continuing to have them in my mouth. Certainly they were less problematic than this recovery period. I'm on "vacation" from work....awesome vacation eh?

ER there is pretty good too. When my mother came to visit me, we went there straight from the airport and she was with a doctor in 40 mins. I've heard nothing, but good things.
Raocorp, sucks to hear man, hoping you recover quickly. I hate hospitals.

Well I suppose it all comes down to priority. My wife was wheezing but non-life threatening so they had us waiting FOREVER.
Wasn't anything life threatening or even remotely close.

You honestly have to be an advocate for your own health, be it with your doctor or hospital. They are processors, you are a number, and you really have to make it a point if something isn't right you demand whatever the hell it takes in order make sure everything is ok before they push you out.
When I got in my motorcycle accident in 2004, after a short stay and being hopped up on morphine i got kicked out 4 hours later without shoes or anyone there to pick me up. "THe bed was reserved for someone else" they said.

I've had people ask me to take them all the way to Markham Stouffville and I work in Toronto. I've heard mostly good things. I *can* however tell you to avoid Centenary, Scarborough Grace, Humber Finch, Humber Church and Etobicoke if you're ever in need of the EMRG in Toronto.
Scarborough grace is garbage...but then again, look at the area lol

hahah man up! Thats not so bad. Get better soon Oh and i;ve been through similar, spent a night at the Brampton hospital, they thought the little flap that controls breathing was infected, forget what it was called. I had barley any food or drink for a week, and almost no sleep i was in so much pain. Finally my wife forced me to go to emerg.

LMAO
Thanks for the well wishes all. I just wanted to share my first experience in a hospital.
Today is day 5 post-op. I am deadly tired. Pretty well zero sleep last night. Just wandering the house all night is boring as hell. I should go hang out at like shoppers drugmart or something, fck.
