He races road too, but opted to let another guy at shop focus more on road so he could hit the CX season hard

epic fail. a couple weeks after committing to the race and talking to you about it I started to get really sharp pain behind my knee. Didn't go away after a couple days of rest and I could barely pedal, any power through my back stroke way just too painful. Did a lot of reading online and my self diagnosis was that I tore or pulled the bicep muscle of my hamstring. I'm going to guess it was a result of the increased mileage I started putting in after deciding to do the race and probably not stretching enough. Ended up taking about 3 weeks off the bike before it cleared up. Overall it was an awful year for me with injuries.

I turned this crappy early 90's hybrid

into a semi-crappy cyclocross bike

Did it with a bunch of spare parts and some good CL/ebay deals. Very low cash layout.

I did a 20 mile shakedown ride on it today and it's surprisingly good. The shifting is a little wonky and it weighs a ton, but it's decent. I was only .5 mph slower than my normal pace on my road bike on that same loop.

Should be a fun crosser and winter beater once it's fully sorted out.

I'm using it as a couch now.

Thanks for the props, folks. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I figured it was a decent platform to start with and then I saw this article and went ahead and tried it.

Nato--your Ridley is nicer than my main road bike. A bit too upmarket for me at the moment. My shit is get-TOE.

Great shot!!! That's crazy fast for gravel in the mix!

I went to the Providence Cyclocross Festival this weekend. One of the biggest CX events in the country. It was bad ass. Saw Katie Compton warming up on her rollers, but couldn't stick around for the women's elites. She crushed it doe.

I've been a bit lazy on mileage lately. Topped last year's number, so I'm not motivated to go out there as much at the moment. Almost have my CX bike working right, so I'll start putting some hours in on that soon. Gotta get my ass in the woods.

I might try to track down some different bars for it because the fit is a little odd. I need to screw around with lever placement/bar position a bit more.

what do you guys have for cooler weather gear?

i just have a full zip jacket, need something for my legs. are tights that pull on over shorts the way to go, or should i get full length bibs with the chamois in them? what about knee warmers?

i'm not going to ride when it's 30 deg out... 40 will probably be the coldest.

I have a Hind running jacket that I scored at TJ Maxx for $16. Then I layer a breathable t-shirt and a long sleeve Tek Gear (Kohl's version of Under Armour) shirt and if it's cold enough, another cotton t shirt on top of the Tek Gear.

Wool socks and toe covers over my shoes. When it's below 42 or so, I'll put a baggie over the shoe/under the toe cover. Ghetto fix that works great.

Hat under the helmet below 42.

Legwarmer extenders for my shorts.

Long finger gloves.

Below 38 and I'm inside tho.

cool weather- under armour shirt and pants, arm and leg warmers, lightweight fleece gloves
cold weather- thermal windstopper jacket and fleece lined gore tex windstopper bibs, shoe covers, pearl izumi lobster gloves

and when it gets really cold, like in the low 20's i put embron on my feet, then a wool sock, then a baggie, then my shoe, then another wool sock and then my shoe cover. my feet prob weigh 5 lbs each lol

i dont usually ride if its below 20F. I think i did one ride last year when it was 15

also, regular trainer

that 4+ weeks off hurt the numbers, just about 3600 right now

a short track (3rd) and Super D (1st) on Saturday, with the XC race being Sunday.

Got lucky and the 3 spokes that broke half a mile into the race didn't cause me any problems other than being annoying. ended up coming in about 10s ahead of 2/3

and getting second in the omnium competition

like i said, really lucky they didn't push up the tape and flat me out or get caught in the chain

Dude--that would have been awesome!!! Would've loved to meet you and see you race!

Oh yeah--I ride a normal trainer through the winter. Dreading it. Might do some spin classes in the dead of winter.

Sick as shit at the moment (see name change/title), so I won't bike/run for a few days at least.

15 staples and 9 stitches to the knee, 5 staples and stitch to the arm.

doing the Super D at Fat Tire Eureka Springs, apparently hit a jump or something too fast or at wrong angle, was out for 5 minutes, don't recall til about 4 seconds before the spot. it is flint around there, so nice and sharp razor blades everywhere on the ground - put a good 1" straight gash in the side of a brand new Speshy GC Grid sidewall

Eh I hit pavement in a crit a while back, but that has been 2 years. I lucked out, all the injuries were superficial and I was back on a bike in 4 weeks, albeit with a very stiff leg. First race back was at 6 weeks.

Raced the Elite Mens race yesterday at DCCX down in Washington D.C. Had a starting spot of 25th out of 37. Had a good start and managed to get a good start and was challenging for top 10 as we broke off the start straight and hit the course prolog which was a bunch of 180 hairpins.lots of elbows and blown lines and i got shuffled back and lost all i gained. first few laps were insane at almost 16mph avg. Hung fairly well for first 25 min then things strung out and I just settled into a groove and tried be smooth and fast. picked off guys here and there and didnt get passed myself. Rode well for the hour and got 20th out of 37. Did 9 laps of a 2 mile course. Ran carbon tubulars for the first time and holy smokes what a difference that made.

step 1. eat cheez its=get fast

Downhill off camber 180

coming out of hairpin

i wanna go fast!

Not yet. It's been a light month for mileage overall. My CX beater bike is just about debugged. I got some hybrid tires for it and it's been a decent street beater. Should work nicely on the wrecked roads in the winter.

I have no intention of racing CX (yet), but I'll get it into the woods within the next few weeks. That local CX park I mentioned before has turned into a raging success, apparently.

Gnarly. I crossed 3100 this week. Last year's total was 28xx, so I'm getting complacent. I'm dreading the cold, too. I can get a deal on spin classes, so I might do that to avoid a few trainer sessions in the dead of winter.

It's abnormally cold here this weekend (low 40's) and rainy/windy, so no bike so far this weekend. I might take the cross bike out tomorrow, but I don't know if I feel like getting covered in mud. Might go for a run instead.

Twas the conclusion of the mtb season today. I was only 11 pts ahead of 2nd place in the overall standings going into this one. Landed 2nd into the trail and soon passed him with team mate on my tail (2nd overall guy). We were glued together on first lap and soon realized that we had produced a sizable gap going into the 2nd lap. Oddly enough we were both able to communicate well about pace and were happy with it - albeit he attacked on a open area that allowed an easier pass and put about 15-20s on me by end of lap (lot of tight twisty mixed with fast as shit sections, being 6'2" on a XL frame has some disadvantages in the tight stuff!!).

BUT fortunately I just had to finish behind him to hold onto my overall lead (5 pts!) - such a fun race - looking forward to being punished next year.

Also the team swept the podium two races in a row!

Almost swept the overall, but buddy was about 10pts short (2 places = 12) of getting 3rd.
