I've noticed that I mostly shoot at the extremes of my lenses. One of the lenses I typically use the zoom for is my Canon 24-70 2.8L, and I'm actually kind of annoyed at it. It hunts for AF constantly, especially in low light, and whenever I'm using a AF point other than center. I'm swapping this lens with this one guys Canon 24mm 1.4L. The only other lens I really use zoom is the UWA, now the 16-35 2.8. I'm probably going to spring for the 85 1.8 until I can save up enough for the 85 1.2L, and I'm probably going to swap out my 70-200mm 2.8L for the 70-200 2.8L II. Ugh, I hate spending money, but love getting new gear.

I was totally into what you're saying (I now have more primes than I should), then I went on vacation. Swapping lenses every ten minutes when it's pissing rain or you're getting pelted with spray from a waterfall is no bueno. I get it, I really do, but a good zoom is really nice for inclement situations.

I'll never go one way or the other...they both have their pros and cons so they'll both stay in my bag.

I'm heading down the same rabbit hole. The Pentax limited primes, both the older FA fast film lenses and the newer DA pancakes, are great lenses. I have a lot more fun shooting with my 28mm prime than my 18-135 zoom, but the zoom is definitely more versatile plus it's weather sealed.

Buy 'em, try 'em, sell 'em if you don't like them in the end.

started w/ a 24-70, sold for 35/1.4. now i'm over super shallow DoF, and would like the new 24-70LII. if it had IS, it would be perfect.

At one point I had a 14, 35, 40, 135, and 400...

Now I've got a 16-35, 24-105, and 70-200. I still have the 14 and 40 but they just sit at home.

Three nice lenses are so much better than 5. So much more coverage too.

I'll always keep an UWA zoom, the 16-35 2.8L now, and a higher end zoom, the 70-200. The middle is where I'm kind of stuck up on. I'm either at one extreme of the focal range or the other. I totally get the need for a zoom to fill in that middle space, and if I really need/want one, I'll get cheap zoom. Although, I still have my 28-70 kit lens that came with my Canon Rebel 2000 and although the focus motor is noisy, the thing takes some pretty sharp, and bokeh-y nice photos.

I've been in a number of situations where 2.8 is just too slow for me, so I like having primes handy. That said, my 24-105 f4 IS has always gotten more use than any other lens I own, and it's the only one I don't think I would ever sell (unless Canon came out with a super cheap 24-70 2.8 IS L, which won't ever, ever happen lol).

I really liked the 24-105 that I had when I got my 5dII kit a few years back. I thought the AF was fast and it was a pretty sharp lens. I sold that to fund the 24-70 2.8. I want to shoot more concert photography, so having lenses faster than 2.8 are a must for low-light venues.

Yup. I pretty much either need faster than 2.8, or IS. I had the 40 2.8 pancake on my t3i, and as amazing as the IQ was for the price and size, I had to take some pictures inside a church and needed 3200-6400 ISO with a shutter speed of 1/60 to 1/80. IE, too damn slow. If I had a 6d or a 1dx, which can handle 6400 or even 12800 ISO and still make great pics, it would be a different story. The 5d mk1 handles 3200 ISO way better than my crop did, but that's its max lol.

Same here, except macro lenses, which I love... which might explain why I have 2 100 macros....

I have an 85 prime as well, which I sort of like, but typically can't be bothered to even bring it with me, lol. I had a 35 and 50mm prime, but fuck em.

Tripod's on the list. Waiting on another insane deal to pop up. Although after fly's trouble with that manfrotto ballhead, I'm a little nervous about their build quality. We'll see.

my 488 RC2 has been without issue. Fucking xprob55 legs are too damn heavy, but the head has been fine - which is the norm I think.

Seriously though, when f/2.8 is way too slow, you got more issues than can be fixed with just f/1.4

Yeah, I need a body that does more than 3200 ISO (or does 6400 really poorly lol t3i). Or I just need to use flash more, which I don't always like to use \:\(
