Today might be the day, it's 26 inside the house and humidity is 60%. Yes/no?

I've had all windows open for the last 48 hours, no breeze doe.

In before hator/eddie/townhouse dwellers tell me how their house is at -9 right now because so well insulated.

Just do it. The savings of not putting the M on the road can be put towards the hydro bill to cool off you and wifey.

Gotta enjoy your $ somehow. ;\)

Wife is out of twon with 5 bg's, otherwise AC would've been on by now, this is the time to experiment.

I took a shower instead, I am cool now. Temp did go up by one degree to 27C now

I am going to try a different technique doe, i recently installed a 150CFM Panasonic fan in my bathroom (baller) and turned on the furnace fan. If I can get humidity to drop under 50% i should be ok.

My fucking POS $249 Nest is a fucking paperweight.

It's currently reporting 25.5C, and 51% humidity ... That can't be right... ?!

And... it's been off for the past .. month or so... \:\|

Big ass fan in the bedroom all night long... FTW.

I got some kinda heat exchanger running 24/7 though...

Only turned the AC on for one night a few weeks ago when humidity was killer. The AC is loud as fuck and about 20 years old so we try not to use it. We just have a fan upstairs and open main floor windows and it seems to exhaust the house pretty well.

What you really need to do though is modify your cold air return to only draw from the basement where it's cool and block the returns on the other floors.

That's an interesting idea.

Well I ran the ac for 30 mins it dropped humidity by 20% it's chill now. Breeze outside so I am turning it off for another month

Hmmm. Great idea with the cold air return. Going to try that. I currently have the furnace fan running for 15mins every hour just to help circulate if the AC isn't running due to temp.

For those doing the window and fan thing another thing to try is getting a cheap furnace fan off Kijiji or if you know someone in the industry. You can make a little enclosure to mount the exhaust on a window and it's quiet and will pull a hell of a lot more cfm than a traditional house fan will

Elaborate on what ?

Windows open in my place doesn't usually amount to much flow through the house.

So while it hasn't been that sticky hot much we have used the ac somewhat already.
Not 24/7 at all though

I stay up all night and sleep till noon. Dumb, but way too hard to switch back to being a "normal" for just the weekend.

Was spending a lot of time last night reading about Florida Keys. That's where I want to go in the winter. Looks like good bars, good restaurants, good fishing.

There are a number of threads over @ Nest re: the temperature being a couple degrees HOTTER...

The thinking is the electronics inside the Nest are heating up the temperature reader....

As for the humidity being pretty off... dunno.

mine is at 21-22 (we in canada metric system fuckers). I put it on early, the construction across the street puts mud on the street that dries and it's like a dust storm everytime someone drives by.

Usually 23 when home. 28 when away...sometimes I'll turn down to 21 or 22 at night depending. Flow to master isn't the best. I have played with adjustment and got it to be acceptable.

of course depending on tstat placement and house layout it's hard to directly compare temp readings. Gotta use dem feeelllsss

yea it's pretty hard. East part of house where bedrooms are generally runs hotter, west side of house has more mature trees over house that shade it. A bit of a cluster fuck.

Keep it at 25C right now, humidity is at 45%, it's pretty much as low as we need to go.

You can easily alter the flow a bit by capping off vents downstairs to get the upstairs a bit more cool air. I think I've only got two vents downstairs that are open. Ceiling fans also help a lot. All the vents in the basement are capped as well.

Captain obvious..though it's still hard on your system to do that. Not really designed for it and usually shortens the life of the fan...though in the end who cares if it means a bit more comfort .

Making an observation != sand

I've got a big hug for you man

When I first got my house I left all my shit open, I didn't even think about it. Until my mom was like why do you have all these vents open? I also close the return on the ground floor and only have the upstairs return open (so hopefully it's grabbing that warmer air)

Just trying to help Vas out.

^had to do that to my place. basement would be freezing and the upstairs would be boiling, after having only the upstairs vents open the place evened out.

I did the whole *closing vents* in my basement last year. The vents that blew in from the ceiling own (in basement) and were shut off, developed a shitload of condensation. \:\|

Still haven't turned on the A/C

Got a bit toasty last night.

Not by choice at this point, have a leak somewhere. Hopefully it's resolved this week.

Pretty manageable though, keep windows/blinds closed during the day. Only open at night. RH stayed less than 60% and it wasn't uncomfortable, kid was overheating a bit, but she needs to learn life under this roof won't be easy.

Had windows open all of yesterday while home but ran some errand in the afternoon with the family. I turned on the ac before we left cause I knew drama would come if we got back to a hot house.

This has been a DIY mission for a while, but we've reached the point of diminishing returns (actually we reached that before I even started this DIY).

The good thing is I found where the leak is, after pressurizing the system to 150 psi the coil is where the leak is at. Going to pay to have someone come in replace it, even though it's tempting to do myself now that it's cooling down.

I feel guilty with the thermostat at 23.5C ... Anything higher, and the 2nd floor is too warm.

26C I'm dying. 29C is Risky cray.

FWIW, I had to replace my 2nd gen Nest with a new one (under warranty) ... the internals were warming the sensor so much that it reported temps 2-3C higher than it really was. (I had to buy an old-school mercury thermometer to confirm.)

i caved and turned it on last night. only because it was 28* upstairs and kid was sweating when sleeping lol.

i can't justify cooling down the entire house, i even contemplated a DIY AC box, i have everything sitting around for it and it makes more sense to just cool my room.

I recommend just paying somebody, it is definitely not DIY. You need to braze the hi/lo pressure lines to the new coil, you need a vacuum pump to pump the lines down and then obviously a set of gauges to check the lines once it has been refilled with refrigerant. If however you do try and DIY this, please keep us updated with pics!

blah blah blah lol

all this talking about the baby and NO AC. What about countries who don't have AC....it's a NA thing...luxury...baby will be fine.

Now...is it a nice move since wifey is probably pissed off and looking after the baby the majority of the time...I'd say no but then again I don't have to live under the same roof so that's risky's move \:\)

As a kid, temperature changes didn't bug me one bit. Played in all sorts of extreme weather.

The issue I see with it, is it worth the discomfort to save $50 for the year? For me it's not, so I just set to to where's comfortable. Now for older homes that have huge bills I understand.

I like the house at 23.5, wifey likes 19. So it's usually at 19 at night for her.

The A coil is pretty old, not worth fixing. Losing about 40 psi of pressure over 48 hours, so pretty slow leak.

I can change it myself, but simply don't have the time right now so i will pay for someone to come in an get it done in a couple of hours.

Don't put me in that group!

I'm starting to learn AC, too.

No. No AC so far.
That said, when the temp in Toronto was like 34, south Ajax was 25 lol.

I typically only have 3 or 4 days in a year where the AC is on.
