Definitely not distance related. I did plenty of 90 minute trainer sessions at high intensity through the winter so the outdoor ride was nothing out of the ordinary. Only difference was it was on the mountain bike instead of the road bike I used on the trainer. I contacted a highly regarded sports medicine clinic that is about 1.5 hours away from me, i'm supposed to get a call back tomorrow to find out when I can get an appointment. Hopefully I catch a cancellation because they're usually booked 1-2 months in advance. where is the knee pain located? Any feeling like there is a foreign object, mush, or slack to the knee?

So I took my "fast" bike out on my regular path for the first time this season--just took it off of trainer duty. Been riding the steelie beater out there so far. INSANE difference in speed between the two bikes.
Steelie is around 25lbs with 30mm section Forte wheels (heavy-ish) and 700x25 hardshell tires with liners in them (heavy).
"Fast" bike is 19.5 lbs bare and has 50mm section wheels (Bontrager Aura 5 front, China carbon rear) on 700x23 Conti Grand Prix 4-seasons.
Felt a night and day difference starting from the first 1/4 mile. I was literally like "holy fuck" when I started off. The 20 mile loop on the steelie in 38 degree weather a week and a half ago averaged 15.8mph (19.91 mi/1:15:49)
Later that week on the same bike in a pinch warmer weather (without the add-on 1-mile climb) yielded 16.4mph average (18.22 mi/1:06:46).
Today, in 52 degree weather on the "fast" bike, I averaged 18.1mph (20.04 mi/1:06:09--with the climb).
I'm indicating temperature because I always feel slower in colder weather. Wut dat thermodynamics do in terms of denser air putting forth more wind resistance.
That ain't no placebo, IMHO. Granted, it's pretty clear that the hard intervals on the trainer have paid off and I couldn't be more stoked about it. As the weather gets warmer, I figure I'll still get a bit faster. Looking at my PR's on mapmyride, I'm still slower than last summer. However, I'm going into the season with a WAY higher level of conditioning.
I actually thought of stickaz on this ride, as I remember him being surprised that his CAAD was 1 mph faster than his flat bar bike. I'm thinking it was.
Nerdy, nerdy shit, but fascinating to see it in action.
Short term goal will be to hit a 20mph average for the 18-mile loop (no climb). I'll bet I'd kiss that today.

first race of the year today and first race as a expert. ended up being 23 miles and 3200 ft of climb. finished 14th out of 31. ill take that considering there was pros from giant mid atlantic and scott pro mtb there. was 4 min out of top 10 and 14 min behind the winner lol http://www.strava.com/activities/127656665

I got 105 miles in this week. Rode the MS25 (well, 27) kickoff ride early this morning down by the beaches. If was 35 out when we shoved off. Beautiful, sunny ride.

Foam roller is more for IT band issues and yours doesn't really sound like that, but I wonder if some foam rolling of the area might help.

I looked up who won, but I still want to see the brutality of it all.
I did a whopping 90 miles this past week. I'm hoping to squeeze in 30 or so tomorrow.
BB is starting to get a little crackly after 7k miles. I guess I need to swap that out soon.

raced my first national ultra endurance mountain bike race this weekend in cleveland, TN. 104 miles, 13,400ft of climb. wanted to go 10 hr, went sub 10 at 9hr 33 min. finished 31st /154 in the mens open field. jeremiah bishop won in 7hr 26min by a half hour and the first SS guy won in 7 hr 40 min. i did beat the womens winner by 40 seconds :P it was brutal tough. climbs for daaaaaaays. strava eic suffer score of 521, a new pr!

I have an 11 mile out/back [22 RT] bike trail near me [paved, wooo]
5-minutes hard, 2 minute recover 6-minutes hard, 2 minute recover 7-minute hard, 2 minute recover 6-minute hard, 2 minute recover 5-minute hard, 2 minute recover [should have me to the end of the road 1-way] do the same on the way back...dont have a power meter but try to keep the heart rate in zone 3/4 or whatever during the 'hard' and stay in my best aero position... any ideas? I am completely new at this. Because Strava my former method was just to try and PR the whole thing every time... or take advantage of a generous tailwind to PR it in one direction and slug it out the other. Basically non-interval stuff tho

Do intervals training once a week as follows: ride absolutely as hard as you can for one minute, then soft pedal as easy as you can for three minutes; repeat 5-8 times or until you think you see Jesus.
