I dont care where to buy the bike from. used, new whatever. As long as I can ride the bike in a combination of road and trail conditions.

I dont know what to look for exactly, but I dont want to spend helva lot of dough on the bike, but I will spend a reasonable amount of $$ on a good bike.

Since we all have XD biking experts on here - help me out CSi-ON.

/in before SX 2.0 SRT4 swap joke comments.

Wait for the experts to chime in, I am not one.

If I was you, I'd get a decent mountain bike (Trek, etc used) put some road friendly tires and roll that. I have that as a ride around hood bike. Bought it for $300 used, has served me well for 8 years now.

Check pinkbike.com Lot's of selection.

How much are you willing to spend? It is much easier to give recommendations when you have a budget, or even a ballpark figure of how much you want to spend, we have no idea what a "reasonable" amount is in your opinion.

What are you going to use the bike for? I know you mentioned road and trail but is this bike going to be used for commuting or is this for exercise/fun.
And when you say "trail", are you wanting something to do some off road single track riding or are you referring to the flat, not so challenging trails covered in woodchip and/or stone?

I personally would narrow my search for a cx bike (considering your riding considerations). It's sort of the rally car of the bike world. Versatile, fast on pavement, can be used offroad. Ok sure, not serious offroad like robbbby would do, but non paved/fire road/gravel/grass/single track/mud is fine.

But like others have mentioned, without a clue on what your budget is, there is zero actual recommendation(s) of a series of bikes.

CX bike is first thing that pops to mind. However, I don't know how to recommend because the range is too broad.

It's ok, there's nothing hardcore enough in Ontario to need more than a CX bike ;\)

max a grand on the bike.

I'd say it'd be used for approx 100km a week.

I've been trolling kijiji and I have no idea what's a good brand bike.

although I'd be happy to get the last years model?

I'm going to recommend a hardtail mountain bike, even a rigid fork would be good but that's tough to find. Cyclocross bike is shit for somebody just starting to ride, a mountain bike will have more relaxed geometry and steering and will be a lot more functional for getting started.
Cyclocross bikes are useless for anything but racing cyclocross.

There is a guy on pinkbike (I think it's a store), that sells brand new Jamis bikes for a good price. You should be able to grab a brand new 2013 slightly above entry level bike within your budget.

Top of the ad says firm, and there is probably tax on top of it since they're a legit company. I'm sure if you showed up with cash though you could swing something. No idea on retail, i'm sure you could find out with a quick search.

At least with a new bike you are getting a warranty.

^good suggestion on Jamis.
That is direct from the Canadian distributor. They are located by Yorkdale mall (if they havent moved yet). No idea why they're doing this, because it's undercutting their distribution channel...but meh, whatever. The Jamis stuff is a good buy. Worth checking out.

more harder more better.
call me crazy, but i much prefer a road bike position to a mountain one.
And I value having the drops available in a big big way. a mtb wont deliver in that regard (unless you're john tomac)

^ in which case if i had to have a mtb, i'd build up something retro and set it up just like that \:D

I agree here.
if the trails you plan to ride are the local ones ;\) then a plan ol mountain bike is plenty for tooling around the hood and those trails.

You wouldn't build up a retro bike like that after seeing what those parts cost. A beat up to shit 1st & 2nd gen answer manitou fork like that probably goes for $500. I've seen mint condition ones go for like $900.
