TORONTO - In this race the OPP were both the Fast and the Curious.
Just call it Grand Theft Toddler.
Or how about the Speed Tween?
The story of a 12-year-old Toronto boy taking the OPP on a high-speed, Cannonball Run-style, chase in a stolen car is something out of a video game or movie.
As Sun Media’s Pete Fisher broke Tuesday this kid literally took them on a modern day Gumball rally along Hwy. 401.
“It is unusual. Very rare,” said OPP Const. Steve Bates at the detachment at Brighton. “I have been in policing in 25 years and I have never seen it.”
On a serious note, it happened Sunday afternoon and, with the vehicle exceeding the speed limit, Bates shudders at what could have happened if not for extra cautious driving manoeuvres use by police.
“This was a dangerous situation,” he said. “There was a public safety concern for sure.”
And a criminal situation.
But as alleged criminals go, the kid is just 12.
He did, however, give them a run for their money.
“We just don’t know how he got that far without drawing attention to himself,” said Bates.
A lot of people close to the case are surprised at how well he could drive — four years before he could ever entertain obtaining a beginner’s drivers licence.
The car may have been Gone in 60 Seconds from its rightful owner but it and the tiny driver were in fact gone for several hours.
The Nissan Murano was reported jacked from East York and police believed the kid managed to travel all the way north on the Don Valley Pkwy. to the 401 where he drove about 170 km east to the ONroute stop at Quinte West, near Trenton.
There, he filled up the tank in what is alleged to be a “pump and run.”
It was that alleged crime that was reported to police and helped police focus in on the vehicle which they later spotted — headed in the opposite direction as if he was heading back to Toronto.
OPP at Port Hope noticed the vehicle and, Bates said, started a careful pursuit. A spike belt was readied but police successfully employed a boxing-in strategy and stopped the vehicle before it went over it.
The boy was arrested without further incident and taken into custody where was charged with motor vehicle theft, theft under $5,000, escaping police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and breaching his recognizance.”
He also had a bunch of veteran coppers shaking their heads in disbelief.
Perhaps, he’s too old now but it’s a part Justin Bieber could have played when he first came on the scene a few years ago.
Too bad Jackie Gleason is gone or he could have made a sequel called Smokey and the (Alleged) Young Offender.
Obviously, it’s concerning that a 12 year-old could be involved in all of this and has been before the courts previously as well.
His identity is protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Any time a young person is in trouble with police and the courts, the goal is to try to curb future problems.
Hopefully, there will be a detour in the future path of this youngster and not a sequel of what happened Sunday.
In this case, the boy has been given bail and authorities and social agencies are looking into just why this happened.
But some were saying Wednesday that they would be keeping a close eye on their car keys while they do.
