Looking at getting a wide angle lens for my Nikon D600 and have narrowed it down to a few choices:

1. Nikon 16-35 f/4 VR
2. Tokina 16-28 f/2.8
3. Tokina 17-35 f/4
4. Nikon 18-35 f/3.5-4.5

The Nikon 14-24 is out of my price range and I haven't really seen anything from Sigma or Tamron that intrigues me.

I've been leaning towards the Tokina 17-35 for the range, size and price but have considered looking at used Nikon 16-35's as well. I'd prefer to stay wider so the 18-35 really doesn't interest me as much as the others (plus, the price seems ridiculous for what you get).

I don't shoot anything specific and the aperture values are 1 stop differences so what would you choose and why?

I have the 16-28 and I think it's a great lens. I've heard less glowing reviews of their 17-35 (soft corners until f8 or so). The 16-28 is sharp, sharp, sharp, is built like a tank, and has relatively little distortion. It's faults are flare and the inability to use regular filters. I did make one on my own using the original slip on lens cap by cutting off the flat part and gluing a ND filter to it so I can do some long exposure work. I've heard the Lee holder for the 14-24 can be adapted too, but goddamn if that isn't expensive.

The 16-35 has VR which isn't particularly relevant and is a little slower but that's not really relevant either, most of these lenses don't get good in the corner until f5.6 anyway. Given the $300 price difference, I'd lean Tokina unless you're planning on reselling later.

The only aspects of the 16-28 I don't like are the bulbous front element, the weight (not a deal breaker) and the limited zoom range compared to the others. Otherwise, it is very impressive.

Give the rokinon 14/2.8 a try. It's super sharp, 14mm on full frame is Badass. It is manual focus though, so there's that, but for landscapes it's not a big deal and for $300ish, price can't be beat.

I'd prefer AF and don't want a wide prime. Zooms only.

I got mine at lens authority. It's used, but, big deal. It's a rad lens and it was slightly more affordable. Slightly. No experience with your options though. I had/have a 20 2.8 before I got the 14-24. Wasn't awful. It was small, light, cheap. But even wider...it's nuts \:D

14-24mm. I would have bought it for $1500 used with an EF adapter 3 months ago but had just picked up a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 prime (great lens BTW).

AF is pretty useless at super wide angles. After a few feet away from your subject, errrythang is in focus anyway.

I currently use a 17-40mm f/4 around 17mm-24mm for landscapes and throw the 14mm on for astrophotography fwiw.

If I had it to do over again, I'd have kept my Lambretta and my 24 f/2.8 prime and bought the Rokinon. The 14-24 is by far the best lens I own (and a LOT better IQ at 24mm than the 24 prime was), but it does tend to be at one extreme or the other, so two cheaper primes would have been good enough for me. Plus I'd still have my Lambretta.

Guy is selling his Nikon 17-35 f/2.8 for less than $700 and it just came back from getting cleaned by a Nikon authorized center...pull the trigger?

Wow, seems like a no brainier at $1700+ new. The little extra range is nice too. I've never looked into iq of that lens though. If good, seems like a steal

I think that unless you're really looking to embrace the crazy perspective distortion that 14mm gives you, this might be a more sensible (and much cheaper) choice. Plus the Rokinon 14mm is always out there for when you do want to go crazy wide.

It was Nikon's flagship UWA zoom prior to the 14-24. I'd be surprised if the IQ wasn't decent.

It's a very well known lens in the Nikon lineup but other lenses have come and taken the throne. Supposed to be one of the best they've made, i'm just concerned with his price as it seems a little low. But it's mostly old people on NikonCafe so who knows...

Ended up going with the Tokina 17-35...so far, I love it. Build quality is exactly how I expected it and the image quality (through the handful of shots I've put it through) seems to be better than I expected.

$489 shipped from Adorama...not bad obama

nice. I'd been looking at the other one, the 11-16 FX equivalent. Probably should have just done that but ended up with the credit at Lens Authority after finding my 24-70. Shoot anything exciting with it yet? Like perhaps the shot in the top thread? heh

I haven't shot anything else but shit around the house and that shot. I haven't really been able to get out with it yet.

Plus, I need to start some sort of photography project because i've been lacking some ideas of what to shoot. This lens was mainly for our upcoming trip but i've been wanting a wide angle again for some time so fuck it, I ordered it.
