Looking into either the 100mm 2.8L or 50mm 1.4. I used to do a lot of portraits, but that has taken more of a back burner and I'm going to focus more on shooting for me, which means nature/floral/landscape. I currently have the 15mm 2.8 fisheye, Tamron 28-75 2.8, and 50mm 1.8 along with extension tubes and macro filters.

I guess this is a good place to mention that I was shooting with the Tokina 100mm macro last night and god damn that thing breathes like a mofo. You change focus, you significantly change focal length. Working on a tripod and playing with the focal plane had forced me to keep altering my muffins to keep them in the frame. Annoying as hell.

Glass seems nice otherwise.

Agreed for how you plan to use it.

All of this. I've got the L version and nonL version from Canon, both are wonderful.

I use a 50D currently. Next on my list will more than likely be FF body.

I was considering the non-L, as I have experience with both. I just REALLY want that damn red ring. I found a used L for $800. I'm only hesitant because I know a Canon refurb is about the same amount but there are none in stock

For money, I'd consider an f/4, but it won't happen because there are times where a wedding comes into play and I'd need the 2.8. I do love that focal range, but it would be so rare that I'd use 200mm, it would be a waste of money, for me. Plus, it doesn't give macro :p

All I can say is the non-L is just as sharp as the L on a tripod, and I've seen many times when the non-L is used more at F22 than the L, again when shooting from a tripod. Obviously handheld the L has advantages...

I love both lenses, typically at work I use my non-L as I'm always shooting from a tripod with external lights.

The 100 2.8 L macro was going for $725 shipped between thanksgiving and Christmas, and you can get it for 750 (or less) including shipping and tax in the next refurb sale. Fwiw.

(That's the direction you should go btw, for sure).

I checked on Canon's site and it was about $835 for refurb, but out of stock. How often do they have a refurb sale?

For a while there last year it seemed like they had a sale every month or two. They're overdue, I'm expecting one any week now. Usually the sales are 15 or 20% off lenses (or more sometimes, though usually 15-20% on the pricey ones) or 100$ off lenses over 500 (50 off 250, 20 off 100, something like that).

If you're desperate to have it in the next week or two them spend the extra cash, otherwise do your wallet a favor and wait for a sale.

Someone in a photo group I'm part of said something about Canon asking if they had an old camera to turn in and they'd get $100. Are you familiar with something like that? I'd consider buying new in that case.
Would I get an email from Canon saying something about a refurb sale?

Check canonpricewatch.com, they're good about giving a heads-up for upcoming sale (and if you look up specific lenses or bodies they have a list of retailers and prices followed by a graph charting the item's price for the past few years).

I'm pretty certain canons deal on sending in an old camera is for a discount off a new camera, I've never heard of It used for lenses? Iirc it's called the canon loyalty program or some such, you can contact them directly for details on it (I did a year or two ago)

The price for the 100 usually drops in May, June & July.

Here's the history of the pricing

Welcome to the world of macro. It's better to manually focus at the reproduction level you want (i.e. 1:1, 1:2, etc) then move the camera/subject around to fit within that space if you're trying to be specific.

I would suggest the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 but to be honest, you really can't go wrong with any macro lens in this range as they'll all be stellar performers. Macro lenses are some of the sharpest lenses out there with only included "features" being what differentiates them. I do suggest one with VR/IS if you will hand hold often enough, but a tripod will work better.

Hell, a guy on our Nikon forum bought an ebay Promaster macro lens for $100 and it is pretty damn good.

The Canon Loyalty Program allows you to send in any broken digital canon camera, which then gives you a discount off of their refurb inventory. You are allowed one each of a body, lens and flash. Google it and you can find what's on the list and their prices. Call the 800 number to put in your order.
