I've had my 5D for almost 5 years now, and it's never been cleaned.

A special shout out to Mike's Camera in Boulder, CO. I may be using the thing for a video shoot next week, but the dust spots weren't something I wanted to risk. You see them all up on the Chris Harris videos all of the time. There was one pesky spot that was visible on white down to an F7.1. Would likely never shoot above a 5.6, but you never know.

Ran out to Mike's today, asked them if they could do it same day...the dude took care of it in one hour. Came back and picked it up later in the afternoon. Also included in the $95 was the cleaning of one lens, so I put the 24-70 on there, too. Shit's clean, son!

Also, I installed Magic Lantern on 4 of my CF cards. That's a really nice free download. Best part of that is the zebra stripes for video and intervalometer functionality.

Literally don't get why people are so scared to do it themselves, it's not hard.

yeah, I'm not doing it myself. Not scared, but not going to fuck it up on my dime, either.

I'm with Nate. I've got all the Copperhill stuff and it's a piece of cake.
But this thread reminds me that I should give my camera a thorough cleaning before my next shoot. It's not likely that I'll be using the company's 1DX or 1D4 for that one

how are you going to fuck it up? It's like wiping your ass.

You are wiping off the filter that sits in front of the sensor, not the sensor itself. Unless you press way to hard, you'll be fine.

I have gotten a lot clumsier over the past few years. With my luck, I'd scratch something or do something totally f'ing stupid while doing such an easy job.

I've been using the swabs, forget what they're called. I've read the pre-moistened swabs are a little too wet, so just got the bare ones and the bottle of juice...One drop on each side, wipe once, flip, wipe once, throw it away, and curse the price of the swabs. I've gotten pretty good at it with the d600 ;\)

See that thing on the bottom? you rest it on your shoulder...way easier to use than holding even a much smaller camera out in front of you.

Is it 'gelly' like expensive running shoes so your shoulder isn't bleeding at the end of the day?

Also, what if you're a left? Can you switch the eye piece over to the other side?

no...it's one way only. there are too many controls. Just gotta learn it if you're a left eye. You end up using both hands anyways. zoom toggle with right hand and focus with left.

To answer the question, it's just a dense foam. It does suck if you use it all day on say, like a reality show. (don't recommend those jobs) The old dude I work with has had a hip replacement on his right side, probably because of carrying cameras on his shoulder for years and years. Used to be a staff NBC guy.

Swabs here too. I was worried about fucking it up (because I've found I can fuck anything up if the stars align just right) but it eventually went well and I'm glad I know how to do it myself.
