What do you have above your fridge? Do you have cupboards of some sort above them?
I find this to be a waste of space at my house because my cupboards are recessed. I just have a pile of shit on top of the fridge and I don't use those cupboards.

Looking for options in possible reno.

Not mine, but I've been fond of this idea:

Or this... if the temperature would allow it:

If you don't really need the space, just do something decorative:

For my kitchen reno I was going to put a bigger non recessed cabinet to store stuff. Right now it's the same as OP, except cabinet is full and then in front I have cereal/other large boxes so I can't even access it. dat 70's kitchen d0e

I have a 24" deep cabinet above the fridge rather than a 12". With no shelves inside its great for the manuals/etc at the back, and at the front which is accessible I've got the stock pots, etc.

We have deep cupboards that we use for storing things like platters, serving trays and the like. Stuff that we don't use everyday but need access to from time to time when in the kitchen.

We have the standard 12" cupboards above the fridge. Useless storage since you need to use a step stool to reach anything. Doesn't help that our fridge is not counter depth either LOL.

But fridges that are the same depth of the counters (37" IIRC) are way too small... you're looking at max 18 cu ft.

For the place we just picked up, we're going to see if we can get a deeper cabinet installed to store the random stuff - huge stock pots, pressure cooker, hot pot things etc. Although I'm sure the builder will want to charge a limb or two for the request...

24" is how deep a counter is. My fridge is considered counter depth at 26". No need for a stool or anything to get things out as it's no different than if items were on the front edge of the fridge. My upper, 12" to 24" when I built my kitchen myself was about $40 difference. The builder charged $250 because I had the same option in my kitchen there too, BUTTTTTTTTTT Mine is WAY nicer, because in the houses I've seen they don't build out the bulkhead which I did in my home now where I built the kitchen.

Good to know - thx! I know that in our place, the cabinet above the fridge won't be extended in un-upgraded form. If they can do it without forcing me into upgrading all the cabinets, I'll be quite happy. If however they require us to upgrade everything, I'm thinking about taking this project on myself as from what I've read, first level upgrades are another $6k. I'm sure I can come in below that AND get everything I want.

Our cabinet above the fridge is 24", and we store all of our paper plates and plastic cutlery there.

We bought the biggest fridge that would fit. I think it's over 26 cubic feet.

Amazing! We've got a 22 cu ft one right now in the place we're renting... definitely going to get one that's at least 25 cu ft for the new place so we can take advantage of the damn Costco membership

Leaning towards some Whirlpool model... ugh... with all this reading about appliances, it seems picking a manufacturer is really pointless as they're all pretty much the same anyway.

Oh shit it's actually 28 cubic feet lmao

http://m.samsung.com/us/appliances/refrigerators/RF4287HARS/XAA

It barely fit through the kitchen entrance... Had to literally squeeze it through.

Would love one of those but at $3200, that's way over the budget.... I'd hope to buy 2 fridges for that price

Nice thing is, we don't want an ice maker/water dispenser so that drastically reduces pricing.

Yea we didn't want the ice/water thing either. Unfortunately those come standard once you get up there.

Yeah, we'll likely end up with one of these:

http://www.canadianappliance.ca/product/...CFcVFMgodojQA6g

25 cubic feet, should be good.

On a side note, a lot of these new fridges now have some sort of air filter so baking soda isn't required... thought that was kinda interesting. You CSIers actually replace them every six months?

Not sure what we have in that cupboard above the fridge - haven't opened that thing in a year or so -- probably some serving dishes we got as wedding gifts that are still in the box; it's not like we have company over all that much -- when we do, the regular dishes will do. lol

My flip's fridge is in the center of the house so I asked to run a cable and power outlet there for the modem/ethernet/Airport router/amp... this allows maximum WiFi coverage throughout the house and allows to stream music to the kitchen speakers wirelessly via Airplay.

ballllin...

My buddy was just going through a crazy reno on his bungalow and scrapped the idea of a built in at 10k+

Are you doing a flush built in or one that sticks out a bit for like 6k? IMO, you gotta go flush or don't bother.
