Met up with Ironmom and swam over at Belmont Shore. First time in over a decade I've swam farther than 20 feet.

Let's just say I have some training to do.

Kent did great for his first time in open water. A couple days a week in the pool and he'll nail the swim in his race.

Thanks - definitely need practice. I guess I'll use this thread to update progress. As I mentioned in the cardio thread I've been struggling with some soreness in the left knee. So switching gears for the Tri will be a welcomed change. My plan:

Mon - Run
Tue - Strength & Elliptical
Wed - Run
Thu - Strength & Elliptical
Fri - Swim (& run if feeling OK)
Sat - Rest or easy run
Sun - Strength & Ellyptical

Kids will be with me every day except Friday.

Pleasanton sprint triathlon results:

17:11 swim #8/39 @I don't even /100y pace [~900y course]
2:48 T1
34:30 bike #11/39 19.5mph
1:07 T2
26:55 run #19/39 8:40s/mi pace
1h22:31 total overall: #13/39 in AG

notes: bonked on the swim by going out too fast. This time includes the entire back half (~nearly 500 yards) being swum at warmdown breastroke pace lol. I did hit the 1st and 2nd buoys with a bit of a lead on the wave heh. oops

bike was good for me, left aerobar loosened up with about 3 miles to go in a headwind probably didn't help much but whatever. 19.5mph is good for me with some hills (250' of elevation on this course, so basically I'm at my goal speed. This is about a minute faster than any of the 3 laps I took last weekend trying to learn the course). In hindsight perhaps a little too fast. I set a PR by at least a minute on the category 4 climb here but I couldnt help myself as there was quite a 'die line' going up it.

And then the run. 26:55 ugh, with a few hills. Faster than last time tho there's that. Not passed by everybody and their brother, but quite a few tho and still slow. Ugh. I tried pretty hard at least. Did not feel good at the end heh. About 200' of elevation on this course which i know is nothing but yea

So still slow, 13/39 in AG which I guess is in the top half at least heh. I wonder if I paced myself better on the swim I probably would have had a much better day overall. No idea though. I felt like I did a good job pushing myself. Was playing cat-mouse on the run with a guy that ended up beating me by 5 seconds, lol cry. [back-of-the-pack racers!] I quietly went over to the grass and felt dizzy/exhausted but I was in line for a burrito 10 mins later.

So still slow ;\) I'm a little frustrated but I guess I learned something today.

^Fred in his outfit. Notice how nobody else is around lol [this is the beginning of the bike leg]

13/39 is a fine effort, IMHO. You're well ahead of that "just happy to finish" crowd. Nice job.

Dumb question--how do you get the splits and the transition times?

You wear ankle RFID chip/timer thingy and each area you pass through stops/starts the timer on that segment. Thanks for the kudos btw... I was just bummed I blew up on the swim lol. I already know im a slow biker and jogger hah. I guess that's the nature of this 'sport', I don't take the swim leg seriously since I expect to win my wave. I think I will slow the fuck down now on this leg. My next one is alcatraz July 20 which is at least (depending on current) 3x as far. But the risk of me going out on a ~1:00 100y pace is going to be roughly zero.

But after that I have a sprint again in Santa Cruz (sandman/ocean swim) in aug followed by my first olympic tri also in Santa Cruz in sept.
So a few more opportunities to get the pacing right. I tried a HR monitor for this one and it slowed me down a little in transition but whatever, was just curious. Averaged 150 for the bike+run together... Bike around 145 and run around 155, was just trying to evaluate my HR zones for training purposes. 150 is a nice round number to use but I'm thinking 155 is my anaerobic threshold based on avging 150 HR for 62 minutes including T2. Not really sure tho

Nice job Stickaz....that's a solid placing for sure. Santa Cruz area is chock full of fast dudes our age, so that placing is pretty damn nice.
