I've been looking at buying one of these for training indoors in the winter. Does anyone have one? Experiences?

Amazon has it for $271 right now, I've looked on Craigslist and haven't seen any used UNIT's pop up around me. Is there somewhere else that people buy them?

Not that baller or picky. I use a $79 mag trainer. Only way I would upgrade would be to get a Computrainer.

Unless you're training for the TdF, this is all you need.

I have a $150 Graber mag trainer because cheapass

The Kurt Kinetic is pretty much the standard out there. Now there's the Kinetic Rock and Roll that can move side to side to simulate real climbing, too.

I'm sure you'll be happy with one. Any trainer is a penalty box for me. Time stands still on those fucking things.

I want to ride over the winter and the snow doesn't allow for that..

If I'm going to spend the money I want to get a nice one and that's where the Kurt Kinetic came into play.

Damn... it's back up to $339

Meh... I'm not some fashion need this or that person that won't use it.

I'll be in my living room with no one watching and don't want to buy something that will eventually break or is a pos.

Link the trainer you recommend...

Here is mine:
http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/16611-3...ive-Trainer.htm

I have nothing against the KK, I've read plenty of positive reviews. I think its pretty similar to my dads CycleOps that I borrowed for a bit. The fluid trainers are a little quieter, but I didnt notice much difference than that.

FWIW, I've put several thousand miles on my trainer and its still working great.

I'm riding on a broken trainer and it still works fine.

Fluid ones all leak eventually, and aren't serviceable.

Get a spare skewer and a trainer tire, rear-wheel computer and DL some Spinervals videos.

Did you notice a difference in the "resistance" between the fluid trainer? One thing I read that I liked about the KK unit was the fact that the faster a person went, the resistance increased.

I read some reviews talking about the resistance on the mag units being a joke.

long ago i had a 1upusa.com trainer and it was great until the friction plate piece went screwy, replaced all parts and it was still fucked.
Bought a tacx mag unit and have been using it ever since. Resistance works well on the mag but it is nowhere near as smooth and quiet as my 1up was.
Have never tried fluid.

My recommendation is to buy a used unit off craigslist and see if you can actually stand being on a trainer. The majority of people hate trainers, and for good reason. It would suck to spend the cash on a good one then not use it enough to justify the high cost. Buy used, if you like it resell for what you paid and buy the nice one.

My second recommendation, buy some cold weather clothing, a cheap mountain bike and just go ride outdoors. Trainers suck unless you are trying to slow down time to the point where it feels like it is standing still.

Every single time I get on my trainer in the winter i'll just start pedalling away, maybe do some light intervals, etc. I'll eventually look down at the computer and notice i've been riding for a whole 15 minutes and gone like 3 miles. At that point i'm usually sick of riding and ready to give up, if I was outdoors i'd just be getting warmed up and ready to have some fun.

Not really. Both use a simple adjusting knob to set the resistance. I just shift gears to change it during my ride.

Yep. Mine has a 5-level resistance. I get that to as close as my "normal" flat ground road feel and then I vary it with the gears. Low to spin, high to "climb".

Don't bother with a trainer-specific tire--get a cheap-o tire off of Amazon (CST Czar is usually $10 there). Just be sure to switch out your standard tire--no need to wreck a good tire.

The trainers usually come with an oldschool all-metal skewer (mine did), but if it doesn't, go to the LBS and grab one so you don't chew up your nice anodized skewer on your bike.

Stack some books under the front wheel (so your arms don't fall asleep) and drape a towel over the stem (so you don't sweat into your headset).

I certainly did say that and was under the impression that KK was the best(and it seems like it is). After the comments here and doing more research, it appears there are other acceptable products and my initial comments were wrong.

So....what's your point?

I don't see $271 there looks like $339 to me. They have it here as well
http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10054_10551_1081178_-1_400864__400864

I've bought a bunch of stuff from them and they are great to deal with.

Checkout trainerroad.com

Its 10/month

Hooks up to ant+ stuff - ie Heart rate monitor, cadence , power, etc

They do virtual power if you dont have a pwr meter.

You can grab sufferfest videos that overlay racing scenes - helps pass the time.

This combo is making the trainer time so much better

Fuck that shit. I did 18 miles in a lightly breezy 40 degrees yesterday and was like "fuck winter". It wasn't totally miserable, but it wasn't great, either.

As for the trainer, I agree--time stands absolutely still on the thing, even if I'm watching good stuff on the DVR.

I have the Kinetic upstairs and did some long rides on it when I first bought it. It's a nice piece and was about the best that I found in my research. I didn't have it setup in front of a TV, so I eventually got bored with it.

I ended up buying a kurt kinetic. Got it for dirt cheap from the LBS and I bought a ant usb stick, already have the garmin heart/cadence stuff, gonna give trainerroad.com a shot. Just finished putting together a tiny computer from spare parts, i'm ready to rock, though I don't know if i'm ready to spend $15 on sufferfest videos.

I've settled on doing faster spinning on mine recently. Not as effective as intervals, but I fucking hate intervals on the trainer.

Supposed to hit 43 here by Wed. Hoping the snow might be gone from the bike path by then.
