Update: Burned some rubber on the tire and shot pieces of rubber on the wall behind me.... I guess a trainer tire really IS needed?

The crappy tire I use on the trainer left some rubber in the roller initially, but it wasn't an issue after that. A harder compound cheap tire should still be fine. Mine's showing no wear after 3 years.

It's important that you tighten it against the roller securely so it doesn't slip.

I have softer road bike tires on there now that I planned on replacing when the outdoor season started, so I just left them on there instead of buying a separate tire.
