I've got a Panny 50VT25. I've used the 3D twice.
But I didn't buy it for that, it was just a bonus.

You'll sacrifice picture quality going to a non-3D set.. Most of the higher end TV these days are all 3D..

Some of the tvs out there allow you to convert shows/games/movies to 3D. The only 3D Blu ray I watch is Avatar, that's about it. I still like to watch movies the old fashioned way.

tvs used to be even more for the higher end shit. Only in the last 5 yrs or so have prices come down. pay 1k for a decent set like the rest of society and move on with life.(or if you want to cheap out buy a 720p set for $500-800 depending on size)
I remember when my pops bought a 55" rear projection in '96. It was like 5k

I don't have a 3D TV, and in the few seconds that I tested one at Costco, I've got zero interest in it. Seems pretty useless to me.

And weighed like 4,000lbs It was insane how much those things weighed actually it wasnt that bad. More awkward in size than actual weight. I had it up until 08 when I bought a new tv. I moved it around quite a bit. I then sold it to a buddy and it was still working great last I heard
it was just a giant pita to move because it took up so much space and you need two people to move it.(due to the dimensions)
