Ran a mile PR on a nice downhill fire road. 5:14.
Was hoping to go sub 5 but had some lingering adductor tightness that made me back off a bit.

I don't...and if Donnie has even a single mile faster than twice that mile speed at Headlands, I'm gonna punch him in his balls.

Had a really solid race in the Malibu Mountains yesterday. 2 loop 50k course (slightly short) with almost 7k feet of climbing and some bone shaking downhills. The goal was to try and have a really even effort on the two loops and I ended up having almost dead even splits. After the first loop I counted how many people I passed, and it was around 25. Finished 29th out of 236 runners.

Had a great long run tonight. 4 mile warmup with the wife and the dog, then 12 more around the LBC. After a lackluster week of treadmill recovery runs from the above mentioned 50k (it fucking wrecked my quads) it felt fantastic to get out for a nice long effort where I felt strong and somewhat quick again. 8:15 average with the last 3 miles sub 7:30.
Oh, and the Garmin 920xt is tits!

Nice! Were there a lot of downhill sections on the 50k? I've heard/read the downhill sections are what gets your quads more than anything (pancake flat Phx runner here).

I decided to upgrade to the 920xt from the 310xt earlier this year, it's pretty slick!

In my own running events, I start my "real" marathon training in 2 weeks. I've been mostly wrapping up the previous Pfitzinger 18-week 55 mile peak plan, nursing a weird knee injury the past few weeks that's had my mileage down. I guess that puts me at t-minus 20 weeks until my first full.

Yeah. Each loop was basically one long uphill followed by a long, pretty steep downhill. Great for the lungs...not do great for the quads. I do specific downhill training too, but this was a bit much for them, lol.

Hope the knee starts feeling better. Sounds like you've got a fantastic base mileage to lead you into this next cycle. Goal?

I am running a marathon September 13. I am slow. I was told I should post about it here. I ran 105 miles in the month of July and I ran 99 in the month of August.

I do not feel prepared. I am worried

Based on the runs you've posted on FB, you're pretty well setup to have a great race. It will hurt from mile 18 or so on, but that's when you just suck it up and carry on. \:D

I keep thinking I should do some downhill work for insurance... maybe I'll step up my game.

I've got my first full in Feb, then another 5 weeks later in March. I think for my first one I'm going to go pretty conservative, maybe 7:20-7:30ish pace. The one in March has a net downhill (the reason I should start the downhill training) and depending how the first ends up and how I feel, I'll probably target a 7:05-7:10 and shoot for a Boston qual if I'm lucky.

That is kind of what I am thinking. It is a very large loop around the city of Sioux Falls that is apparently scenic. I am thinking I will be ok. I am not going to be setting any records but I think I will finish in a respectable time.

That's a really good plan...use that first one as a learning experience. Pacing is such a huge part of a good marathon time. You basically have to ride this really fine edge from stat to finish. For me focus was the key to me getting my BQ. Focus on race specific training, but mostly in the race itself. It's all about settling into your goal pace and tuning everything else out.
In your first you're going to be so distracted by everyone around you, the discomfort you might start feeling, etc.

But shit....if you feel good at your BQ pace, then might as well go for it. \:D

I'm targetting a 4:00/marathon hehe. As somebody once told me: why don't you go ahead and break 2:00 in a half first and then get back to me...

mad kudos to anyone anywhere near a BQ pace :notworthy:

Thanks, nice having some confirmation on my plan. \:\)
I figure if it's anything like my first half a few years back, it'll be overwhelming on its own.
I've got a small half-marathon in Nov I'm hoping to benchmark my progress with. If I can hold my 6:50 pace (I think it'll be easier than the last half I did with the extra endurance from the 20-mile long runs), then I can nudge in just under 1:30 for a new PR.

I know they say not to put a time on your first marathon but FUCK I hope I finish in time to see the award ceremony

Race is this Sunday. Feeling VERY nervous.

6:30 Official Start of Marathon and Marathon Relay
11:00 am Award Ceremony

Got my number (1105). A little over 300 people are running the Sioux Falls Marathon. About 35 are in my age class (30-35).

I would tell you not to stress, but that's impossible. \:D all I can say is to enjoy every second of the experience. Rest well this week, start hydrating on Thursday and run your race. As they say, the hay is in the barn!

Forgot to mention I did Conquer the Bridge this weekend with friends from work. Despite taking it easy in the heat, I managed to place 182 of 3147. Fun race, but brutal hills lol.

Not sure what happened but the wheels kind of fell off around mile 20. It's not that I was tired or hurt, I just wasn't mentally in the race. It was a very odd feeling. I still finished. It was my first marathon. If/when I do another one I will probably do a little longer long runs toward the end (my longest was 19 before I did this).

My official time was 4:34:06. My goal was to finish between 4:15-4:30. If I had stayed on pace like I was before mile 20 I would have hit that and more. Oh well.

I finished 17th in my age class out of 20. Damn 30-35 class

Yep, just finishing a marathon is impressive. Still 4-1/2 hours straight of running. That's a ton.

That feeling at mile 20 will not change with future marathons lol.
