I bought the rebuild kit off of ebay and the guy emailed me the manual in pdf format. I need to buy really big snap ring pliers, but the auto parts stores don't have anything large enough. I'm going to Harbor Freight today to pick up their pliers set. I'll post pics as I progress.

Edit: Also, while everything is off I was thinking about restricting the oil inlet.

What are your thoughts on filling the oil feed fitting on the turbo with JB Weld and then drilling it out with a 1/16th bit? Too ghetto?

If it were actual weld, I'd give you the thumbs up. JBW in that environment, knowing where it's going if it fails? I wouldn't. They sell fittings that haven't been drilled for just the purpose you're talking about though. Not sure where, but I've seen lots of the Holset DSM'ers use them.

Where do you recommend? The inlet fitting is 12mm (1.5 Pitch) to -4 AN Male

Edit: Ffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu! The giant snap ring bent both the large Harbor Freight pliers and is still in there. Time to go to Lowes.

The directions may say within 30° but try to get it as close to straight down as possible.

Holsets, at least the HX35 which is similar to the HY, are more like $100 to rebuild and way easier than a Garrett. I would also take Denmah's advice and restrict it, even if it's only down to 040 it's better than no restrictor when the engine is cold and oil is really thick: Not using a restrictor like this can blow your seals. You should be able to find any fitting and restrictor you need @ atpturbo.com

Rather than go to the store for a third time trying to get a decent large snap ring plier I used a small pry bar to jimmy the giant snap ring out. Mission accomplished. I'll try to finish the rest in a bit.

Does it have a GIANT snap-ring holding the compressor housing on? Try a pair of big Vice-Grips, especially for reinstallation. Then put another pair of small vice-grips on the adjuster dial of the big vice grips, and slowly twist counter-clockwise to install.

Yeah, giant snap ring. Thing was seriously pissing me off. Great idea on the vice grips. I'll give it a go.

Edit: Don't think vice grips will work. there are no tabs on the end of the snap ring to grip with. I know some of the Holsets have the tabs on the snap ring, but my doesn't.

I got her all apart, but fuck my life I can't get the tiny snap rings back into the center section. Calling it a wrap for the day.

Also, the turbine blades look great, but the shaft has some scoring on it. I'll post pics of everything in a bit.





After taking the turbo apart and looking at the oil passages in the cartridge I can see how mounting the oil feed/drain horizontally wouldn't allow for proper flow. Live and learn.

I'm at a stand still. I'm having a hard time finding snap ring pliers small enough to put the snap rings back into the cartridge. I've looked at NAPA, Advanced, Autozone, and Lowes and haven't found anything suitable. I hate having to buy specialty tools I'll only ever use once or twice. Pisses me off.

Could try a bike shop. Or McMaster Carr. Just think, you could start a sideline business rebuilding Holsets...

I couldn't help you. I have a 6 plier tray from the Snap-on man that probably cost me a weeks wages, but I've been able to work with some really tiny snap-rings. T25, T28 are a lot worse than that holset.

Fuck that. I hate dealing with intricate little things. Give me a bolt, nut, and wrench and I'm cool, but dealing with little tiny shit like these circlips is a miserable experience for me. I am going to buy the pliers Scottstaypuff posted in his HY35 rebuild thread from 2008.

Finally sat down and spent an hour and a half putting the turbo back together. I oriented everything for more efficient operation i.e. the cold side outlet will be easier to plumb and the oil drain is vertical. The wheel doesn't have any play, but doesn't spin as freely as I remember. I hope putting some Mobile 1 in the oil inlet and spinning the wheel by hand will get the shaft and bearings spinning more like I remember it. Inlet restrictor is also installed

.059, but keep in mind I have a -4 feed line. Now that the drain is reoriented closer to vertical, I could put the original feed back on, and see how it does (reinstalling the restricted feed if needed)...Thoughts?

Edit: I'm going to start mocking up the charge piping to in the engine bay. I pretty much am good to go from the turbo to the fender.

Got the charge piping hooked up, started her up, and it would stutter and die. couldn't get it to idle at all. disconnected the charge piping in the engine bay and she ran fine. wtf
