Anyone have any experience with these? I was watching a professional shoot portraits in a fairly bright setting but with a lot of potential for shadows and she was using one of these. The end result was quite nice and I started reading up on them.

She was using this one:

And after a lot of looking around I found this one which looks promising:

i have 3 CN160 led panels.

I use them for video mostly.

You can get them for about $60 each for the chinese ones, or an actual brand name one would run you about $500

http://cgi.ebay.com/CN-160-LED-Video-Cam...#ht_3434wt_1397

Its also nice cause they are modular and you can connect 2-4, however many to form one large light.

They are very bright, can run off 6 double AA batteries, can fit on a hot shoe or on a light stand, or hand held.

Nice cause you dont need to run any cords for power, dont get hot so you can hand hold etc...

I used 4 on my last film shoot.

Heres a few screen shots from my footage.

They are not bright enough to light an entire large room. so in these last 2 pics i also have flourescent overheads on, it was hard to get the lighting to match, or look decent, but just something to keep in mind.

I think they are more better suited for like doing an interview, but i love them for doing film stuff in a pinch. I hate the hassel of running actual lights (not to mention a decent arri light kit is about $5,000)

Is color correction in video very, very difficult?

Yeah, I see them used a lot on video, but it appears that the DSLR crowd is starting to use them too.

its something im still learning (ie: I suck at it) as is lighting in general.

I think the top shot is one of the few shots i really nailed.

Also when combining 2 different light sources with diff temperatures its just over my head and hence why some of the classroom stuff looks off.

I tried turning the overheads off and just using my lights but then there was nothing but shadows in the background and it didnt look right.

It looks like you are in the first shot. Either that, or a ghost with an LED panel.

yep, actually its probably one of my crew holding a light, i saw it in the shot, but couldnt figure out a way to get the look of the actress i wanted without it showing int he class door, so i just tried to open wide and blur the background as much as possible.

In the film its only about a 5 sec shot so hopefully it isnt to distracting.

Just had a meeting last night and got a 2 more scripts in development now.

I would stick with a true flash...

One nice thing about not-really-hot hot lights is being able to see how your lighting is working for you (or against you). Since small flash lacks modelling lights, this is a nice advantage. There's a bunch of downsides too: power, size, cost, etc. but that's a definite upside.

I think I'd rather buy cheap drop lights and stick color temperature controlled florescents in them and maybe stick cheap white sheets in front to soften the light. A whole lot cheaper (though even less portable than the LEDs)

yeah the benefits for LED for me is that its very easy to use for run and gun type shooting, but if your doing setup shots, powered lights are always going to be more powerful and better.

For basic stuff? No, it's not. Can it get incredibly complex? Yes.

For still photography, a relatively dim constant light source is not really a good option for shooting handheld, or for shooting a subject that moves.

I was purposely letting wb be a little off, because those walls are a soul sapping off horribly boring and dingy off white.

Ended up being not that great of an artistic choice.

Lesson learned though.

Just pull some green and yellow out of it and it will help a lot.

jon, do you really do a lot of "run and gun" shooting?

Sometimes, especially if im grabbing shots at locations that i dont have a location release for.

But def not as much as say a documentary focused film maker.

This is indi world, money isnt changing hands, and until i get famous (not likely), or actually start selling things im not concerned about it at all. I also purposely shoot things in a way that they are not easily identifiable (ie: never shoot street signs, business signs, etc...)

Ive shot in several restaurants, and hell my last film i shot almost entirely on a college campus and in an empty classroom neither of which i had any permission to be there.

I know its standard procedure, but until i get to that point its just easier not to.

I know my professor once said they closed down a bathroom at a hospital for half a day with one of those little cleaning signs and a bucket and shot in there without permission. Now i would never do anything that crazy, but its a little different than the pro work you do.

Who is really going to come after you if you don't have permission? I mean, does that happen a lot? I'm asking, I have no idea.

I would go with the maxim: If the cast and crew aren't getting paid, the property owner sure as fuck isn't getting paid.

If the cast and crew are on the clock, then every i needs to be dotted and t crossed to make sure no more money is thrown away than absolutely necessary by shit that could have been avoided.

I had to look up that quote. Did not realize that she was the first one to discover "a bug" in a computer, among a ton of other interesting accomplishments. /coolstorybro

be careful buying the generic ones though, make sure you've got solid reviews on them. and not just from people who've never used another before. i got some from the local camera store in a pinch for a remote camera system at work and they got a damned good profit off of it, because these lights sucked balls.

Leds are so amazing that they led strip flexible take so little power. And i mean they an extremely low amount of power. Get a switch, its not going to fry from 60 leds. It could take up to 250 leds from a single switch.
