not me, ewwww. co-worker is having a kid in a few weeks, he had been looking at the s100 but he said today that they're thinking about an slr, the T3i specifically. I don't have any problems with that, but was thinking a micro 4/3 might be good too, smaller, lighter. Not that the T3i is huge or anything. Any thoughts on that? The Ep3 or epl3, never can remember which, is always highly reviewed.

i'd say in doors performance and then later on fast focus would be important for them for sports and what not.

T3i with kit and a prime? they can get the canon 50 1.8 pretty inexpensively. maybe one of those bounce cards for the popup flash too?

hammer nails? they'll want to take pics of their newborn as it grows up. indoors pics while it's a baby i'm sure, then as it gets older pictures of it playing sports and stuff. i don't know. he's not really the type to get gear lust and want to upgrade every year, so i can see them having it for a long time. the newborn. ha! just kidding, the camera. he's not trying to start a photography business, just have a camera.

All I'm going to say is that if he's going to get a DSLR, and I don't care if it's a Canon, Nikon, Sony or whatnot... He needs to get it quickly and start learning how to take pictures quickly as DSLRs are not point and shoot.

My friend grabbed a Sony DSLR when his daughter was born, and he admits his mistake was waiting for her to be born and buying the camera as the first few months of pictures, in retrospect, are terrible. At the time they were acceptable. Now that he is almost 2 years into it, the pictures are wonderful but he wishes he went with Canon or Nikon for better glass.

This is good advice.

I'd say stay away from Sony. The company is unstable. They have lost money 4 years in a row, are projecting a $6.4 billion loss this year, have a new CEO, and are going to reorganize. They're gonna cut a lot including 10,000 jobs. They're looking to expand into other markets including medical. Who knows if their cameras are going to stay. If you go Sony, get some lenses, then they stop making the cameras, you might have a bunch of lenses with no place to use them.

Aside from company issues, their cameras are good.

I definitely reccomend a Sony Nex camera. I would get the Nex-5n with the 18-55mm kit lens if I were him. Then pick up the E-mount 55-210mm lens for sports.

I have had a Nex-3 for about eight months now. Before it I had a Pentax K20d for over a year, this K20d was my first DSLR. I have learned tons more with my Nex than I ever learned on the Pentax. Jumping into photography with a full fledged DSLR was a big mistake I made.

And for what its worth. The Nex series of cameras use an APS-C sized sensor just like most of the DSLR cameras on the market.

yeah the sony's have some nice features on the newer alpha's. personally i'm digging the specs on the new OMD from olympus, but i want a full frame sensor if i were to buy another camera, and if i buy full frame, i want to stick with nikon for myself. the k5 looks cool because it's all weather sealed and tough and stuff.

but now this is digressing into just general camera discussion. i think the T3i is a solid choice for him, just wondered if the EP3 would be worthy of consideration. I think it would be, but they decided on the T3i themselves from reviews and consumer reports. As often as they've been on sale they should be able to get a good deal too. I'll loan him my d40 to fool around with in the meantime, at least he'll get used to the size of the camera and some of the functions, even if operation will be different.

They have pissed off a lot of customers due to a lack supply. But that and as I understand it the financial losses are largely due to the Asia floods that forced Sony to relocate production to other parts of Asia.

I have no reason to think that the Next series of cameras won't be around for a long time. They are supposed to be releasing several new NEX lenses and cameras this year.

They claimed imaging as one of their what, 3? pillars of reorg to focus on, so the line shouuuuld be safe, but you never know. There's a lot of change there, but then on the other hand again, they acquired a pretty large imaging company for their system, so they've got something invested in it. But then back again to the other other side, if it's not making them money, off with it's head.

I'm going to loan him the Kelby digital photo books too. The ones that tell you on one page a tip on how to get a shot, like he's answering your question while out shooting without going into the scientific reasoning why. They've got some decent info that should really help him out. Tried to get another buddy to read them on his way to Italy but he couldn't be bothered :P He bought an EP1 when it was on sale for $200 with the lens. He stuck with the auto modes, I haven't seen his pics yet but he said he was really happy with it, and excited to get fancy with it at some point.

Get any entry level camera + kit lens. My suggestion would be an external flash and learning how to bounce it.

AF-S, wide focus area, and learn the camera.

hell yeah, i caught that too. he was going to leave it up to his wife to see if she cared about 720 vs 1080, but i told him that was a winner. we're swamped at the shop right now so he wasn't too concerned with digging into it at that time, and preggo wife is on bed rest, so seemed like a good task for her.
