I want to turbo the 4Runner. I am ready to buy parts. It has been done before by a couple of guys. I would love CSi's help in selecting the proper turbo, acquiring parts, and giving any suggestions that would assist with installation.

This could be really fun. If you want to help just reply stating so. Rather than make a bunch of different posts every time I have a question, I thought I would just put everything into one thread.

Here is the background info:

-02 4Runner 3.4L V6
-Budget: $1500.
-Goals 250hp/300 tq with peak torque around 1500rpm.
-I don't mind buying some parts used if necessary
-Must be remote mounted
-Non intercooled, no meth for now.
I've owned several turbo 4 cylinders in the past, but I've never turbo'd an N/A vehicle.

The 3.4 has shown that it can handle 7psi reliably on the stock fueling settings/components and timing.

To give you a basic idea:

The turbo and piping will be protected by a belly skid

Thoughts?

I dont see it happening at that budget unless you are building from scraps, but it could be fun regardless.

Goodluck with the build

Meh, it's been done before, I'm sure it can be done again. Just gotta get some good deals on the more expensive parts.

First thing I'd like CSi's help with is selecting the proper size turbo for the desired power band. One thing I need to consider is how readily available the turbos are and where they typically fall price wise. One of the setups I've been following is using a T04E. That seems appropriate, but I'm sure SVA is better at reading turbo efficiency graphs than I am (I'm terrible in fact, but learning).

What are you (or the other builds) doing for tuning?
Holset HY35 is a cheap option that will make the power you are looking for.

Don't need to tune. The engineers at TRD have said the truck runs great up to 7psi without additional tuning. One of the guys I'm modeling my build after is seeing AFR's of 14.5 psi out of boost and 12.5 in boost at WOT. He's running a T04e, 63ar, 57 trim. Many TRD superchargers and a few turbo trucks have lots and lots of miles with stock tuning. There are options out there for those who want to run more boost such as URD's tuning software and 7th injector kit.

I'm looking online and the HY35 looks to be at least a grand. Where can I find inexpensive holset turbos? They are internally gated right? I'm not suggesting that the HY35 is the turbo I'm going to use, just wondering I can find these for a great price. I'm going to wait for SVA's resident turbo experts to chime in before I buy anything.

holsets are cheap. They're turbo diesel take-offs for cummins, I believe.
there's a lot of cheap turbos capable of movint the small amount of air needed for your goals.

Saab 15T is about the low-limit for 250hp, mitsubishi E3-16G/18g/20g,T28, Volvo 19T/K24, and a bunch of other take-off turbos could do it, but you'll need a relatively large turbo to move the amount of air you need @ such a low psi. T04E seems like a good choice, but I didn't think they were cheap-enough.
if it were me, I'd scoop up a used holset as suggested from ebay/or a junkyard, or start looking @ EvoIII 16G's before they price jump.

I can keep an eye on the Link forum classifieds for you if you settle on anything. I don't think an E316G would be all that efficient at 7 psi being such a small-frame turbo. Now a 20G? I could see that. Those can be found for around $400 if you want me to try and hunt one down. I also see Holsets quite often, mostly the HX35 variety which will be a little big I think - it's about the same frame as a Garrett GT30.

Stupid question, but have you thought about PM'ing denmah to see if he has anything sitting around that might work?

Matt (Denmah) is actually pretty close to me and would be a great asset but I dont think he'd be interested in working together. I mentioned this project to him in pm a while back but he didnt show any interest. I'll see if he can source a turbo.

How does a 16g or 20g compare to a TD04E? Are they both internally gated? What is stock boost set at? I'm guessing I'd need a boost controller for either of those because they are probably set to see at least 14psi.

Unrealistic goals.

You can't simply pick and choose your HP/Torque numbers, or where they will occur...even with turbo charging (well, maybe with a monstrously missized turbo, but I digress....)

Essentially the powerband will stay the same, and the ratio of your HP to Torque numbers will stay the same as they are...the HP/TQ numbers will go up, sure...but you won't take a vehicle that makes 150hp/180ft-lbs tq to the rear wheels and suddenly get 200hp and 500ft-lbs of torch.

It's a general rule of thumb for turbo, and as such is meant as simply a guideline of what to expect, or what may be needed to obtain a given goal and gauge how realistic it might be to do so...but:

For every 14.7psi (1 bar) of boost, output increases by 100%. So a car that makes 100hp/125ft-lbs to the wheels now getting 14.7psi from an appropriately sized turbo, tuned correctly, etc, will now make 200hp/250ft-lbs of torque. The torque and power curves will look very similar, assuming you're making 14/7psi at the same rpm's. Likewise, at 29.4psi, that car will make 300hp and 375ft-lbs of torque, so on and so forth.

At 7.4psi, 150hp/187.5.

These are general numbers, not actually intended to be precise.

Now, are your numbers realistic? Sure, I guess...don't know what the stock 3.4's make to the wheels, don't care to look it up. But would you really get it to make the 300ft-lbs at 1500rpm? Nope...not a chance (though, you can through some dyno trickery, usually on an engine, not chasis dyno, get diesel like numbers by really restricting the rate that rpm increases, or loading the engine to reduce the rpm over the course of a pull).

Otherwise, it sounds like a fun project that could be done with some experienced guides checking in on you from time to time.

My truck makes 187hp and 217ft/lbs stock so the ratio of hp/tq would be almost identical at 260hp/300ft/lbs. (all crank figures)

187/217=.86 260/300=.86

edit: just saw I originally put 250hp so 250/300= .83 which is still pretty close.

I guess I am being optimistic on where I'd like the power band to fall relative to the total output. I'd rather use a smaller turbo and make less power lower in the power band than more power higher in the rev range. That's why it's so important I find the right size turbo and I can't do that without your expertise so thank you for the help so far and for any help in the future.

So generally 187*.5= 93.5+187= 280hp (I used .5 as a multiplier assuming I'd boost 1/2bar).

16Gs are internally gated at 13-15 psi, I don't know an exact figure for it. You'd probably have to go with an external, 38mm, to reduce boost to 7 psi. I'm not 100% sure on the 20G but I do know they can be internally gated. I don't know what a TD04E is comparable to. I found some things that say it's a .57 trim turbo but unless you know what family of turbos you're comparing it to, it's impossible to gauge. I would think something like a Garrett T28, Mitsu 18/20G would fit the bill. I've seen a lot of people shooting for low boost go with fairly large turbos due to how efficient they are at lower boost pressures. That's the opposite of, say a 16G which doesn't really hit it's stride until 15+ psi.

Ah well, there is no reason I HAVE to go internally gated. Just wanted to keep costs down/keep things simple, but I guess I'd be better off with an external?
Are the Evo turbos watercooled?

+1. Id be very impressed if you could limit boost to 7psi on an internal gate. Ive got an old t3super60 i ran with an internal gate. Lowest i could get ot of it was ~9.

The gates from any of the cheap option turbos from other oem applications will probably be useless for you

Id hunt for somthing external used. All of these parts you will need *can* be found from various forums around the interwebs.
Do you weld?

when i used a ko3 on my motorcycle internal gate dialed all the way back was 4psi

that is too small for this though...

you're goal is so low that i would say why even turbo?

a master power 70, .68ar is like 599, and will make approx 650rwhp

and on low boost will probably easily outflow your mafs on that car.

maybe you could get a used 20g or something like that, but man that is alot of backpressure probably

any turbo around 60mm will probably do what you want.

So if I get a turbo with an internal wastegate we'd just weld the flapper shut and of course install an external gate right?

i have a guy who i get turbos through.

vsracing.net

call him as his web stock is no where near what he can get you on the phone, if you call him (viren) tell him you know me and he will give you a discount for sure.

he stocks alot of 400-1000rwhp stuff though,

ide be willing to bet a mpt70 with the .68AR t4 tangenal will make plenty of power and stay very cool non intercooled under the car and with a 44mm gate from him for like 140 you can easily hit 2-3 psi to start.

yeah i am in love with master power/magnum/borg warner turbos

viren stocks them all.

we are using a master power 76mm with a 1.0AR exhaust side, big mother on the truck. it doesnt light off well till about 3500 on 292cubic inches

is the 187hp crank numbers from the manufacturer?

ide say 100whp over stock on anything is doable.

so someone said there is room on the stock mafs and fuel system to make a few more ponies without modifying anything?

Yeah 187 from the manufacturer. The stock fuel system is good for 7-8 psi no problem. Aything over that and most guys use a 7th injector kit.

Is your MAF in the intake filter area like it is on most Toyotas? In that case I think you'll want to recirculate the BOV. You can only vent a BOV when using a MAP sensor (speed density) or when you have a blow-through MAF like on GM setups.

New the TRD Blower is around 3g's. They are hard to come by used because they get snatched up quickly, and a lot of them leak at the nose cone or need rebuilds.

That's why I was exploring this option. Similar or more power for much less of an investment.

For a $1k-$1.5k difference (I think your $1500 estimate is optimistic), I'd plop on well-designed factory blower over a homemade muffler-mounted turbo without a doubt. If project money's that tight, a custom turbo is never a good idea.

*Attempts to wipe smile off face*

Yea. Gonna go ahead and disagree. Denmah isnt magic. If hes close by and his knowledge can be tapped, Id say why not have some fun slapping a turbo on it?

If it can be done, post pics, let us all enjoy and dream, thank Denmah, and romp on your new toy.

If it cant, post pics, let us all learn from your mistakes, thank Denmah, and then save up more money to do it up proper. Win win.
