Sorry if this has been asked before, but:

Will 16x7, 45mm offset, Rota Slips with 215/45 Azenis - fit under my 99 SI?

I'm currently running the car with a 2" drop for autocross, and -3 front camber, -2 rear and zero toe all around.

I had to roll the rear fender lip to fit 205/50 Azenis on 15" 43mm offset SSR comps, but that was when I had just -1 deg. of negative in the rear. There is about a 1/2" gap with this set-up at both the LCA and the fender lip, with some polishing taking place on the LCA (under extreme cornering)

These will be dedicated race wheels with only limited street driving, so a little rubbing is OK. I'm trying to get just a bit more tire under the car, and to have a taller gearing option for faster courses ( sitting on the rev-limiter sucks, as does upshifting to 3rd for 2 seconds and then downshifting)

Thanks.

Also, I read in one of the Honda Tuning magazines about a year ago about a shop here in So Cal (Glendale?) that stocks all sorts of used wheels, and that does fender rolling. Anyone know about this?

I tried Kosei K1s 16x7.5" 45mm offset with 215/45x16" Azenis back in 2001. It rubbed so bad, but I only had baby camber settings (-1.5 front, -1.0 rear).

I'm thinking with my newer camber setup it shouldn't be so bad AND I was thinking of doing this too but with a 16x7" wheel, 44mm offset and my -3.0 front camber and -2.0 rear.

Thanks for the feedback -

Where did you rub - fender or LCA (rear) or was the problem up front? I can still mash another 1/4" out of my rear fenders, and could increase negative camber/ ride height if needed... I'm currently running stiffer front springs than rear, and have to set my rear bar and shocks at full stiff to get proper rotation - so stiffer springs and more camber are not out of the question...

I'm running the skinniest tires in my class, but am now 4th in points with 3 races to go. By my calculations, I need to pick up 1 second (60 second courses) on the points leader by the end of the year to win the championship - but I've only been eeking out 1/10th or so per race. GRM did a test 6 years ago that suggests the 215 tire is optimal for civics, yielding an average of about 4/10ths per 30 seconds over a 205 tire.

http://www.grassrootsmotorsports.com/plustest.html

The LA region STX points race is insanely close - 8 points out of 600 cover the top 4 spots. That's about 1 second out of 351 raced this year. I'm pretty sure that a bit more traction is all I need....

It rubbed everywhere. Back and front. Don't think it rubbed the control arms. Some guys are using the Falken FK-451s shaved which I saw at Nationals this past week in STX.

Well -

I ordered them yesterday - let's see what happens - I'm not above a little more fender rolling, raising the ride hieght, and increasing camber to get them tucked.

All the sellers I talked to said it should be no problem, but recomended a 40mm offset. I'll report back next week on what the deal is...and I may have a brand new set of bronze rota slips with slightly used 215/45 azenis for sale the week after if it's a disaster...

How did the other Falkens fair at the nationals? Karl Aseily took 5th overall in STX in the BMW that I've been beating locally most of the season, and Beverly Larson took 2nd in STXL in the same car. Without the rain on the second day, Karl might have won - instead the WRX's ruled the day. I also noticed that a couple of civics did very well in street mod -

Stay tuned...

I'm going to try both since Falken is my sponsor. 215/45x16" Azenis and 225/45x16" FK-451s. Good luck!

I just installed the wheels, and I'm here to tell you - 16x7x40 Rota Slips with 215/45/16 Azenis Sports will fit under a 99 SI with -2.5 degrees of front camber and -1.5 rear, and a 1 -5/8" drop on 500lb front and 400lb rear springs and rolled rear fenders without rubbing anywhere - even hitting massive potholes, dips, and driveways

Tomorrow, I'm gonna drop it another 3/8" to racing hieght and see what happens, but I'm confident I can make the set-up work. The only question now is will it be faster on the autocross circuit?

You'll have to wait till sunday for those results....

It's what I thought then. on a 16x7" wheel the 215/45x16" is more rounded, plus with more camber it's better (of course).

Now some guys in STX at Nationals have tried shaved Falken FK-451s and did very well on them. And it comes in a 225/45x16" which is a bit wider than the 215/45x16" Azenis.

Just finished practice today and what a difference - the handling is UNBELIEVABLE - it goes wherever you point it with absolutely no understeer. I can just romp on the gas mid turn, and it actully turns IN rather than pushing like with the 205's. As an added bonus, the tires never got hot. I was consistently 1 to 1.2 seconds faster than the points leaders in my class, posting times in the mid to low 55s, while they were stuck in the mid 56s. Karl Asiely (5th place STX at Nationals) was driving a highly modified Evo 8 (32lbs of boost, lag control, R-compounds, 400+ HP) and was just 3 seconds quickier. Ken Montonishi ( last year's STS National Champ) took the car out for several laps, and couldn't belive it either - he repeatedly complemented me on how well set up it is now - and he drove it before the wheel swap - (he was able to beat my top time by 3/10ths, getting within 2.5 seconds of the Evo)

There are some minor rubbing issues with the car in *extremis* but a little more fender lip pounding and bending will easily fix that. The car feels slower on the street, and accelleration isn't as crisp, but damn its fast in the turns!

Maybe the best mod ever....although everything else was certainly in place to take advantage of it.

The Championship is tomorrow - Now, if I can just keep from blowing it....

Wow, I am glad this worked out for you...it sounds like it made a world of difference on the track. And if these are strictly track wheels...who cares if it seems slower on the street...right?

GOOD LUCK TODAY!!

Update -

I drove horribly today, and only finished 5th ( 2 runs dirty, had to stand on my first) - but then let Wil Kalman, one of our region's to drivers use the car for PAX. While he also coned every run, his best raw time would have placed him 3rd in PAX in my car. That's third out of over 250 entries.

At the end of the day we had fun runs, and Will took the car out and ran a 53.1. This would have won PAX by a good margin. The Evos and Vettes only managed 52's and 51's on R-compounds, and one was driven by an 8 time national champion.

After seeing the times posted by Will, I rode along with him to see how I was messing up.

Basically, I was driving like a pussy : This guy tossed and slid the car around so close (and past) the edge it's unbelievable - and the car just asked for more. After that, I grew a pair, and went for it: My best time plunged from 55.6 to 53.9, with a passenger and hot tires - which would have smoked my class by a full second. Of course, fun runs don't count

Anyway, Will thought there was 52.XX in the car. The wider tires are definately much better - Now, what about some 225's???

Actually, camber is - 2.8 front and -1.8 rear when fully lowered. You'd think it would eat the inside of the tires, but nope - I actually corded my last set on the shoulders.

I run zero toe, and that's the key. Also, the settings are closer to -2.5 and -1.5 on the street since I raise it 3/8ths after racing.

Great tires for autocross or track, but overkill for the street. I'm gonna sell my ssr's and look into some nice narrow all seasons for my stockers.

Yokahamas?
Avons?
Dunlop?

Street Mod Results are in:

TT SM = 52.568

TT in my car (fun runs...) 53.1

Thats right - even with street tires, and stock internals, the car was just 1/2 second behind the wining time in street mod, a class that draws over 30 entries locally. Top time was had by an M3 driven by a national level driver. granted, it was unofficial, but even if you count the official results, the car would have placed less than a second behind SM top time.

Hmmm I wonder what a 9,000 rpm redline, 225 hooziers, and a JRSC with 12lbs of (cryogenically pre-cooled) boost would would do???

Maybe next year....
