Thinking out loud here, what are the upsides of a DI engine? From the outside it seems more expensive, doesn't seem to provide additional fuel savings, no performance gains, more oil changes required, harder on the engine, requires richer mixture to achieve proper emissions.

I wouldn't say that. It's just that 15k mile OCIs are a stretch to begin with; adding forced induction, direct injection, etc. doesn't make it any easier. The only way to make sure it's safe to run OCIs past 5k in this particular motor is to UOA IMO.

I agree with you 100%, a string of UOA's is the only way to gauge how your specific engine is handling the oil in question. Fuel dilution issues aren't anything new in the diesel world however and guys are still running extended OCI's with decent Group IV PAO full syns. You're sure the oil you running is a true Group IV and not a semi synthetic Group III?

Was that question for me? I actually don't own a 335 so I don't have to worry about it lol The Civic gets Pennzoil Platinum, which is a semi synthetic Group III, but a damn good one. With my driving style I should be able to do 10K OCIs no problem, but I limit it to 7,500 miles (which ends up being about once a year).

My bro's VQ35HR equipped G gets German Castrol though, which is a true Group IV, because those tend to be hard on oil too so it needs "the good stuff." My GC stash actually just ran out, so next we'll be trying Rotella T6, along with a UOA, to see how that does. I'd recommend T6 to all you Subie guys out there too, it's done extremely well in both stock and modified applications up to and over 7,500 miles of abuse.

While it's more complex and more expensive, their is a slight fuel savings and definitley more power to be found going DI; especially in little n/a motors where the big bump in CR helps to make a good bit of power down low. I agree, given the precise control of fuel theoretically these cars should be way more efficient/better for the environment. My guess is that, since most DI cars are also currently turbocharged, manufacturers build in a way bigger safety net than we're used to seeing. I'd imagine that the opportunity for knock is much higher so to account for that they just throw a ton of fuel at it, which in turn, takes away all of the benefits of DI to begin with.

I'm pretty sure it's more than just running rich. I'm quite certain I read it has to do with injecting the fuel later in the stroke. I'm guessing going from 5k intervals to 10-15 isn't helping either.

My SRT-4 and FXT were both in the 10:1 range when dynoed. The SRT-4 pegged the wideband which only went down to 10:1.

Most definitely, I'm not disagreeing with you. Whether the timing of the initial injection is altered, or an extra injection is made as the piston descends, too much extra fuel is getting in there one way or another. Why those adjustments are occuring is the real question here.

Improves efficiency and off-idle torque, since you can run a higher CR. The 3.6 DI in our Traverse is running 11.3:1 on 87 octane. Fuel efficiency is typically up ~2mpg with more power over a port injected engine.

With the new CAFE rules impending, you are going to see DI become the norm as automakers use everything in the bag to squeeze out more MPG.

Ah, I was assuming you had a 335 \:\) The 0w30 GC is a great oil, although pricey as fuck.

If you can find it, Esso Xtra XD-3 0w30(40) is a Group IV and the price is right. I was paying $23 for 4L's at Walmart before they stopped carrying it.

At that point I was mostly trying to find the problem, and not overcomplicate things by adding more variables. I can pick up a set of AFR 165s for around 800 dollars or so, but that would also require new rockers, and a tune. Besides, I'm pretty sure timing chain has fixed the heat issue. I'll post another update thread soon, probably after April ButtonWillow event.
