Built one the other day with an 8" tangband w8-740. Amazing bass from such a small subwoofer. It utilizes a folded horn design from http://www.billfitzmaurice.com

You can build them yourself from the plans if your handy with woodworking. Hands down best sub build I have ever done. Went up against my brothers 12" Infinity reference in a sealed box + another cheaper 12" (2 X 12") and it was as loud but played lower and very musical.

Some pics

Heres what the build looks like inside.

you know you shouldnt waste your time on silly projects. Shouldve invested that money back into your house. Would get a much bigger return.

Infinity reference or perfect 12 in a sealed box hits hard. I remember when I had the teg, I had two perfect 12s in a sealed box. You could move your nose hair with the spl

That folded horn design must hit pretty hard then

heres a graph comparing it to a normal 12

Also the Tuba is efficient. I had about 25 watts going into the sub when it was playing at those levels. The woofer can't handle that much power but is capable of 120 watts rms.

can something like this be built for home theatre? i need a new sub that sounds good. i have a cheaper old paradigm that isn't very musical, just sort of makes the same note at different volume levels.

I would love to toss this in my 330i and compare it to my JL 12W3 at the L&YM meet. The graph looks better than I thought. What do ya say? I'm interested and wondering if I'd become a believer. No sarcasm.

Take your pick:

http://www.billfitzmaurice.com/

He has the Table Tuba or Tuba Home Theatre. Depends on how much room you have to spare. You could also do a Tuba 60 but its more for pro sound use.

Hit me up if you want to start a build.

Ya I definately will in the near future, got a few other projects on the go still so the theatre stuff isn't seeing much use. How much will something like this run? I don't need crack the foundation type bass, just something tight and clean that will sound good and work well for effects in movies. I'm just trying to save spending $1k on a decent sub since I still need to upgrade my AV receiver.

Actually i remember you saying it takes a while t build these right because you can only glue one piece at a time? Maybe i'll start this sooner than later.

edit - holy fuck these things are huge

Don't know what happened to my post but:

The builds are fairly straight forward, and you can knock one off in a few days, just depends how comfortable you are with woodworking and what tools you have at your disposal. It also helps if you precut all the pieces, test fit them and assemble it, than take it apart and glue it all up at the end. Thats what I did on my last autotuba and it cut down on the time because I wasn't doing a couple of pieces and gluing, than waiting for it to dry.

Cost is minimal. For a Lab 12 or Lab 15 driver your looking at $150-200 for the driver itself and $25-50 in wood, thats it. A plate amp will run about $100, for that setup you will knock other subs out of the ballpark.

If you go with a table tuba the 8" driver can be had for $50-60 and the 10" driver a bit more.

He has the Table Tuba or Tuba Home Theatre. Depends on how much room you have to spare. You could also do a Tuba 60 but its more for pro sound use

sub goes in that access panel on the side. Its just meant to be opened to initially install it and if you ever have to service the sub.

Its not garbage, its just not as adequate as say a 12 or 15 loaded Tuba HT. You can only expect so much from an 8 or 10" driver no matter how big of a box.

A table tuba would be best suited for a small living room or 2ch setup where hardcore bass and super low extension is not needed.

If your thinking the tuba ht is too big than you have to give on something...is it going to be sub size or extension/output?

Another thing with these builds is any small air leak can really impact the results so its super important to check for any air leaks in the chambers and horn, and also seal everything up really well. Even a slight air leak can skew results dramatically...its just the nature of the design. Its not your basic sealed cab where you drop in and go.

took a couple videos, you really need headphones with good bass response or a sub on your comp speakers to get an idea. Also it was so loud it causes my video camera mic to start distorting, all of the enclosures I have made so far cause this on the mic. I did not have this happen on direct radiator designs before.

I have worked with FG before when building some kick panels, but nothing major. Its too messy for me to enjoy using it a lot, so I try and stick to wood only.

ah gotcha. a long time ago i saw i think it was JL audio make this enclosure that fits 1 10 or 12 in the corner of the trunk of the integra. it was molded to fit nice and flush but i have never been able to find them. i want one so i don't have a box, and a cage is going to get welded in so i don't even know if a box will fit in there.
