I've had a couple of people say that they were "meh" on the photography recently. It's tough because I don't necessarily blame them, but I'm not sure what they would have preferred I do. It's a near bone stock looking 350z and I didn't want to over-edit... I was going for clean, simple shots, those seem to work well and appeal to everyone.  What I learned from this is that I really want a rig, and lights.
To be quite honest, most images in spreads like this aren't overly complicated and pretty simple like you have it. Some cover shots are more involved, but the simple setup shots like you have are pretty basic.

Yea man, Kyle you did exactly what we wanted for that type of car. FTW.
As far as lights and a rig go, I'm not going to sit here and say "no don't do it," because they can both be extremely useful tools when used properly. My advice is to remember that having lights and/or a rig, does not in of itself make a good photo. I can't tell you how often I see hideous, horrendous, appalling, infuriating, complete and utter failures of the "standard 3 point lighting" technique... And all those Flicker boner homos are like "pmg! groundbreaking !!" Not to mention rigs.  So yes, get them, but use them to supplement a shot.
And involved cover shots.... I guess that all depends on your definition of "involved"
