I shall get slaughtered - this is mainly just a "pay to train and ride with other people" thing.

one thing though - the more time I spend on the singlespeed, the more the thought of "sell everything else" comes to mind

How do you guys make the time to fit all this training in? Not married? Work from home? A century a weekend?

I got in a measly 27 miles yesterday (50 out) and I was happy about it. Snowing now, so that's it for outside for at least another week.

you guys have great work schedules for a cycling lifestyle. I normally don't get home from workk until 4-4:30, tack on a half hour to that to get ready for a ride and the earliest I can get out the door during the week is usually 5. It's great in the summer but early spring and fall can be a pain in the ass to squeeze nice long rides in with it getting dark early. I'd love to work a 6am-2pm shift.

invest in lights - most of my riding has been in the dark this year.
granted location may matter - we have a pretty chill Thursday night ride that I can get anywhere from 35-50mi knocked out. Generally take two Serfas 500s - have one that is one step down from full blast most of the ride and then turn the other on towards end (since about 2.5hrs they'll start fading out at that power)

honestly - we feel safer at night as we have seen maybe 10-15 cars in all of the rides since December.

Another thing that got my ass out when conditions are less than idea is my singlespeed Crosscheck with some fenders - not getting sprayed with water/debri definitely makes crappy rides more bearable.

edit: http://www.amazon.com/SecurityIng%C2%AE-...pd_rhf_gw_p_d_7

I use this on my bars for night rides on MTB - I can leave it one step down from full blast and it goes for 3+ hours. I'll just use my serfas at max power and switch them out about halfway through ride.

Fuck me, this week has been awful.

After my 9 day in a row trainer session I took a couple days off.
Get back on the trainer and 20-30 minutes in my legs start tightening up and then cramp. Repeat the next day, same thing. It's been 4 attempts now at resuming riding and every single time, 20-30 minutes in, legs start tightening and few minutes later cramps.
I'll admit, it very rare that I stretch or roll my muscles, but even during the summer when I ride a ton and race, I never really cramp up. I just don't understand how I was able to do 9 days in a row at nearly 100% effort without issue, and now I can't ride for more then 20 minutes. This sucks.

Wow--I wish I had some insight. The only time I cramp is after at least 60 miles in very warm weather if I don't keep up with hydration/electrolytes.

I'm baffled. Maybe lingering overexertion? My legs are still fried from yesterday's 1.5 hour trainer flog and you did that for 7 days. Might need a much longer recovery but I'mno expert. I hope it passes.

Any doctor/physical therapist friends to bounce it off?

Ride #6 attempted tonight and I got a sharp cramp right in the middle of my right butt cheek 35 minutes in. It hurt like hell and I couldn't pedal through it, pain just kept increasing. Took a couple minutes to try and stretch it out but within 1 minute of riding it was back. This is really starting to worry and piss me off. I've never in my life had a cramp in my ass.

any chance you over did it with the 9 days in a row? Was that the tour of sufferfest? Have you done that many intense rides in a row before? did you stretch properly before and after?

Ya was the sufferfest tour. I've definitely done that sort of intensity for that period of time but it's usually in the summer. If I overdid it I don't think I would have made it all 9 days without issue. It's a week and a half since i've finished, delayed onset muscle soreness should be long gone and I should be fresh and ready to keep going. Very little stretching, i've never been much of a stretcher and never had problems, even in the summer when I race and spend much more time in the saddle.

perchance just the fact it happened this time of year? I don't know about you, but usually lot of people are coming out of a rest period and just doing base work.

I'm sure I wasn't conditioned for the sort of abuse I did. I probably had 40 hours worth of saddle time since december before doing those 9 days, which I know isn't much. I'm just confused why this is happening so long after the fact, if it happened during those 9 days I wouldn't have been shocked.
Ah well going to try again tonight, maybe do a bit of stretching and see if I can break the 35 minute mark lol.

Finally, after 2 weeks I was able to complete a 1 hour ride without cramping.

http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/747527-Carson

Not really a crazy workout, just some sweet spot intervals.

Surprisingly doesn't feel like i've lost too much power considering i've only done about 3 hours of riding the last 2 weeks.

Anyways hopefully this cramping bullshit is behind me and I can get back to some decent rides.
