Which terms?

The "30mm"/"50mm" refers to how deep the "V" profile of an aero wheel is. If you look at a time trial bike, they have super deep profile wheels that slice through the air more efficiently.

The aero jacket Ironmom was referring to is a set of covers that turn a standard wheel into a disc wheel for about $1500 cheaper (minimum). I actually saw them mentioned somewhere while I was researching aero wheels.

nato--will look at those Carbonlite wheels. I have to check back at them if they're full carbon. I want an aluminum wheel track so I don't have to switch out brake pads when swapping wheels.

the ones i posted are the clr40's which are alloy wheels with a brake track, they do have full carbon wheels though but they dont have a aluminum brake track.

Where did you get yours so cheap? I saw them listed at $799.99 on their site.

they are the alloy CLR40 wheels, not the carbon CLR38. the CLR40 are 549.99 and i got 10% off for being on a team. comes with extra spokes and nipples too. i ordered mine direct from them. they have GREAT customer service.

no prob! i really wanted the clr38 or clr50 tubular, but decided that carbon wheels for cross are probably not a good idea....at least for me \:\)

46:01 in tonight's TT. Slower than last week but still faster than last year's PR. Felt a bit sluggish in the first portion--I think there was too much time between warmup and go-time.

Did my first group ride last night with NBX bike shop in Narragansett, RI. A beautiful 23 mile loop around/near the beaches of RI.

Somewhere around a 30-rider group and it was brisk. I can't believe how fast a group is vs. solo. Now I understand how a peloton works. We averaged 18.0mph and it was shocking to be holding 22-23mph without much effort at all.

Good experience. \:\)

And now you see why they marshal drafting in Ironman races so diligently. Pair a nice aero position with hanging off someones wheel and you barely have to pedal to average 25 mph.

so wrapped up my XC mountain bike year today. 7 of the top 9 guys in the standings showed up today so it was gonna be a fast one and longest race of the year, 20 miles. i already had the series locked up and didnt actually need to race, i had a 357 point lead and a win is only 230, but i raced because the kid in 2nd beat me 2 out of 3 times we raced this year so i wanted one more shot at him. race started out of a 3 mile, 15mph prologue onto the course. was sitting with my teammate in 6/7th spot just letting the race come to us. alex, my rival, was up around 2/3. a few miles in we come do a doubletrack section and i bust ass and pass 3 guys and get on alex wheel. it was, phil, alex, me, and slowly we started dropping evverybody. few more miles later, phil started fading, bike problems, so it was me and alex. i sat on his wheel and let him do the pacemaking because he wasnt pushing super hard and i was feeling good at the pace and my legs werent burning so i just chilled. about mile 9, he crashed hard. i hopped off, ran around him, re mounted and attacked. i put a solid 30 min. effort in to gain as much of a gap as i could. about mile 15 my front wheel started feeling "off". i looked, didnt see anything so kept going. it got worse and i saw i was getting a flat. i had to run my backup wheel with a tube since i taco'd my tubeless rim...and i had the tube at 23psi lol i was like fuck it, i only have 5 miles to go, im riding it. i rode it about 2 more miles and i was like i better pump it. hop off, pump it, and as im doing it, alex passes me. i hop back on, barely any more air in and take off. how i didnt roll the tire off the rim i dont know. 2 miles to go i hit something and loose all air. now im on the rim. fuck it. i rode the last 2 miles on the rim and still managed to get 2nd place, 22 seconds in front of my teammate lol so i won the mid atlantic superseries 19-29year old series, pro/cat1 here we come next year!

It's pretty cool to watch you develop as a serious cyclist. I know the minor leagues of cycling are devoid of much glory, but very cool that you're climbing the ranks like this.

Did a slightly abbreviated version of my 18-mile loop yesterday (17.39mi) and PR'ed it by a longshot. 53:54, average speed of 19.4mph. Previous best was 56:11. Bit by bit, I'm getting faster...

thanks guys! it has definitely been a great year and i FAR exceeded my expectations, 10 races, 2 wins, 8 podiums, a silver at state championships and a the mid atlantic series win. cant beat that. next year is going to be a wake up call though. get to race a kid in the pro/cat1 open class who just got 20th at the last U23 World Cup race in Mont Sainte Anne, so that should really suck haha. now its on to cyclocross racing!

nice work gamby! just gotta ride ride ride to get faster! im almost at 4k for the year so far!

I'm hoping this week will be a decent amount of miles. Doing a fast loop with a friend tomorrow, TT on Tues and a longer ride on Wed.

I'll bet I only come in around 2500 miles for the year, though. We'll see what the coming months bring.

Looking forward to the 'cross updates. \:\)

Did that 17.3 mile loop with a fast friend today and PR'ed it yet again--this time in 51:39 at an average of 19.8mph.

Was in the parking lot for a it when another (slower) friend pulled in. Rode it again at a slower pace, but I still paced him for his PR on the same course. He almost cracked the 1 hour mark (which was monumental for me last year).

TT tomorrow. Feeling fast. The legs got a helluva workout today, though.

Does anyone else have trails that are set up with bars along the way? The trails have expanded majorly here in the past few years and there's small bars with food stops all along the trails. It's an awesome setup!

Like paved bike paths or off-road trails?

Either way, no. It's a helluva business opportunity with the network of paved paths around here, but then again, they go through very residential/unbuildable areas for the most part.

Paved paths, there's a lot of small towns in Iowa that the trails go through and they are building the bars next to the trails or the trail was purposefully built next to the bar.

That would be pretty sweet. I'd be way into that. \:\)

Tonight's TT was decent. 45:32, 18.84mph avg. After the finish, an older dude on a TT bike said he was tailing me for a good part of the course, but I left him in the dust on the last two climbs. I told him that was out of pure anger (not at him).

Felt good, but there were a couple of spots where I still could have pushed harder. I think the 45 minute barrier is my wall this year.

Hoping to throw down a mellow 30 tomorrow and another 22 mile group ride on Thurs evening. I really want to go over 100 miles this week.

Just finished my second hour of the day on the trainer and am now waiting patiently for my wife to get home from getting her hair cut so I can go out on my 9 mile run. Hoping to make this a big week that culminates in a mock half iron race in Tahoe on sunday. Oh, and mountain biking up there on Saturday then camping out.

I'm dreading trainer season. I'm hoping it's a mild winter so I can get as many actual miles in on the bike as possible.

Did 30.5 miles in a hair under 2 hours today. Legs were fried from yesterday's TT and it was 89 and humid, so it was way more of a chore than it should have been.

I can see where drugs that aid recovery would be popular in pro cycling.

It's been 89 and humid here and I was about to post that's its been unseasonably cool in the afternoons

Just went for a little 9 mile recovery ride after the typical 31 yesterday. Tried to get some fast spinning on the single speed but legs were pretty toast.

"Tahoed" my bike last night.

Swapped in an 11-28 cassette and a new chain, tuned the rear derailluer, put the bottle cage back on the aero bar extensions, and tightened everything down. Im hoping that 5k climb up Brockaway Summit will be a little easier than it was last time on that 11-25.

It's going to make a pretty big difference. My bailout gear is 34/28 (I run a 50/34 crank), but I'm carrying a lot more weight up those hills, too.

I'm a firm believer in spinning up hills.

Looking forward to the post-game. \:\)

Yeah, the hill I'm talking about is a bitch. Solid 8% grade for a little over 2 miles, then the last 3/4's is like 12.....it fucking sucks! Oh, and we have to do it twice. The good news is that the with the exception of another climb in a private community that none of us get to see till raceday) rest of the course is pretty flat with some long sustained downhill sections to gain back some of that lost time.

I'm hoping I can be somewhere in the 6 hour range. My main goal is to not push the bike so much that I blow up on the marathon and be closer to a 4 hour run than the 4:45's I've done in the past.
