My friend and his wife are looking for a car, and they're hoping to get a city golf. Correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't the city golf poorly made in Mexico, or am I mistaken?

What is the difference between the Reg Golf and the City? Is it just the aesthetic or other bigger differences?

The Golf City and Golf Family are different cars in almost every way. One is a MK4 that they started selling in 1999 with some slight differences, and the other is a totally new car.

What would you recommend to someone in that price range?

they're late 20s early 30s. Decent income, but rather get a cheap little car for point a to b. they're NOT car people. i'm sure they like the golf for it's styling.

looking in the sub $20k cat. they're looking at new like suckers, so i'm trying to convince them to go used.

pretty sure they won't go through the motion to import one because it's a lot more work than they're willing to do.

new Jetta is only shit for people who are concerned about handling and some extra features.

the base jetta is a daily driver car that they dumbed down a stripped out a lot of shit to get the price point down.

Honda has $2500 cash back and 0.9% financing on the Civics. A mid level Civic SE is under $20K.

i don't think they like the look of the hyundai or civic.

they're one of those ppl going with a preconceived notion that a hatchback is good because it offers more space to haul stuff, and for skiing.

If they don't care about the car and just want an A to B car they should look to a ford focus or fusion. Way more car for the money

true. the focus is getting less uglier by the year. how's the reliability of Ford these days?

problem with my friends is that since they're not car people, a lot of focus will be placed on how the car looks.

we'll see. Thanks for the suggestions guys. keep 'em coming

I think with the new Jetta, there were a lot of silly things that they cut back. ie. Instead of hydrolics for the trunk lids, its back to springs and there isn't a hydrolic thing to keep the hood up.

its a good chick car or a first car......Since the OP is incorporated, I don't think they need to start at the bottom of the barrel pricing wise.

basically the City Golf is using an old MKIV shell with the 2.0 (2 point slow) engine, it is a basic car. Most of the regular Golf and City Golf are made in Mexico. My 2001 GTI was made in Brazil, not like it makes any differences. Basically the City Golf will be pretty reliable as VW already fixed all the bugs from the MKIV (windows clip, MAF, door latch, etc).

If OP's friends are not car people and need a car that is very reliable. I would look into a base model Toyota Corolla, i saw on the newspaper they are going for $14,500 MSRP. I would consider a Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Fiesta/Focus, Hyundai Elantra.

Kia has the Forte 5 door coming out this year. It's pretty sharp looking and the Forte has great reviews too.

The new Focus hatch is decent too.

Lots of nice hatches to choose from these days.

the original timing belt looked pretty good, no cracks or anything like that. the water pump i cant say so much.

timing belt was changed at 400,000 km for the first time?
i would change it like 250,000 km ago, no way i am driving a car with 400,000km with original timing belt and water pump

I don't think it's an interference engine, so sure you're stranded but other than that it's just delayed the expensive timing belt change.

Dude a solid rear beam isn't that big of a fucking deal, all the MK4's are solid rear beam and people rarely complain about it, OMG NO IRS

If you want a base car for a good price, the new '11 Jetta owns.. Bigger then any of it's competition in the price range.

Once you step up to the TDI, you get rear disks and all the other options if needed.

OMG...car will never fucking see the track so who fucking cares if it's a solid rear or IRS. Fuck, most homo's here are always saying RWD > *

Well fuck you, unless you hit the track with your car it doesn't mean fuck all

cranky this morning? I currently have a MKIV Jetta and a RWD car with IRS and on the streets there sure is one hell of a difference. If you care nothing about cars tho then who cares.

I had a MKV Jetta too and if they really did take away stuff that they offered in the past then it's pretty lame.... Seems to be the trend however.

Unless you push your car to the limit there's no real way of "seeing" a difference. Reason why the bimmer drives so much better isn't just because it's RWD. The car has a great chassis which IMO, is the most important part. Overall driving dynamics on the bimmer is far greater than the past cars you have had so obviously it drives better. If the same bimmer came in fwd and for day to day driving you will not see any major difference between that and a RWD.

All things you said are true. I still love the fact it's RWD, I "use" it all the time. It's also one of the reasons the car is so balanced.

Back to the topic tho, tell them to just go drive a bunch of stuff. The VW's are decent cars.

The MK4 Golf came from Mexico/Brazil and some GTI's from German. The City Golf is only built in Brazil. The new Jetta is from Mexico. The base 2.0 is a bit slow but very very reliable. I had one and never had an issue in 280000km. Just oil changes
