I heard that Digital was scheduled to shoot Miley Cyrus in Cairo this weekend, but dropped everything when he got the call for the Mandelbaum wedding late Wednesday night Nah, lets not exaggerate now. iirc, the celebrities he does are mostly b-listers and sports athletes. Way different than shooting Miley Cirus or Lady Gaga. And the root of Robs assholery, HATE. YOu dont' actually want to know anything you want to bag on people 1000% times more successful and talented than you'll ever be. /captsaveajug! i have worked with Lady Gaga. Filmed her for an ad for my video company. also folks like Kanye west & chris brown and rihanna (when at their peaks), but that doesnt happen every day, obviously

Rob, can you ask for help without being a condescending prick? Good lord.
That said, I think you're not very exposed (pun and intended). The large marjority of photographers will do wedding photographer, but merely as a means to an end. It's a high stress, non-creative (for the most part) gig that will sap the emotion out of you in a hurry if done on a repetitive basis.
You'd have to be someone that loves the wedding industry. And that's few and far between because nearly every company associated with weddings is high stress.
I could be a wedding photographer. lol not a high skill area of photography imp for 95% of working wedding photogs. They might pay some bills with wedding but they are not honing their craft.

Another thing about wedding photography: it's a saturated market. Like, very saturated. Photography, in general, is not a well paying job unless you're damn good it (or can market yourself like woah and/or both), so shooting in a saturated market is not the ideal situation...especially long term.
If it were me I'd do it on the side while havign a real paying job. Build up a wedding portfolio and get a referral bas ebuilt.

That's the best way to do any type of free lancing. You need to build up the clientèle.
FWIW, I'm not a photographer, but very familiar with that type of industry, and work closely with people in that line of work.

Too much stress...if you screw it up, it's someone's very-important-to-them pics. Also, wedding photogs are dime a dozen...look on craigslist, people are crying to get started for a next to nothing wage.
I personally couldn't think of something I'd less want to do than to deal with bridezillas on their "big day."
On the other hand, I got away with getting married without a having a big wedding, so it would be cool to profit from those that have been roped into having one. Those that know what they are doing charge a pretty penny for sure.
This, i have the equipment and arguably the skill to do this and make some side cash. I couldnt charge real wedding photographer money, but i could jump in at the low end and charge $8-1,200 easily for a day of work, and probably 2-3 days editing, uploading etc... But no way it woudl be worth it, and to much risk of ruining somones precious memories. My free time is worth more IMO.
If i do work on a project, id rather do something im passionate about and interested in, even if its for no money.

My free time isn't worth anything right now...I'm dying for work, so $1200 on top of any other wages I make during the week sounds pretty good to me. But I don't know if I'd do much editing at that price point. Just some basic adjustments/color correction.

1 day, + 2-3 days editing = $1200.
How much is your time worth Jon? That's easy fucking money, I don't give a shit what anyone says.

ehh, thats not really much more than i would make normally, not even overtime money. And honestly for me to give up a day or two of actual free time, for something i wasnt crazy about doing it woudl have to probably pay 2-3x what i make at my day job.
Again, like i said, i would MUCH rather shoot a short film i wrote for no money for that time, than make $1,200 working on someones wedding. You have to remember, if you mess something up it could cause problems. You might have to spend more time editing, or re-editing, you might have to do a re-shoot, or deal with someone unhappy with what you give them and thats a lot to have to deal with. Honestly I wouldnt even do it for $2 or even $3,000 even if i had a guaranteed gig lined up, id tell them to find someone else, someone more experienced, somoene who is familiar with dealing with all that drama. Believe it or not, its a lot more involved than just showing up and snapping pics for 6 hours.
With work, family, school, and other stuff my free time seems to be rare, and i enjoy my time off.
I mean think of it like this, you might not make any money fishing but you love it, and its so worth it for you. Im sure you wouldnt give up like 3 or 4 or more fishing trips for some side cash.

Yeah, the $1k range seems like it gets you basically straight jpegs on a cd-r with no printing.
My high school/college girlfriend does (or did) weddings on the side (she's a shooter for The Washington Post) and even at her price point, she still shoots jpegs and converts some to b&w.
I found her page (under construction since feb? That's annoying): http://www.voisinphotography.com/Voisin_Photography.html

Good interview, content wise haha. Doug touched on a lot of really good points, as a far less experienced (and successful) shooter, I can still attest to the networking thing. Network your BALLS off, that is how you will find work. The only reason I'm working where I am is because I'm friends with Sean Klingelhoefer, who told me about this job opening. Okay, that's not the ONLY reason I'm here but I wouldn't have even known about the job if it weren't for previous networks. The dude who was doing the interview with DS is probably a good example as well, his website is very "meh" and his photos are not interesting, exciting, or unique in my opinion. But I'm sure he does fine for himself and shoots a wedding almost every weekend because of networking and word of mouth etc...
A wiser man than myself once said "Persistence trumps talent every time." (Jay Maisel) If you don't think this is true, just look at how many crappy wedding photographers are still out there getting paid. LOL.
Also note that DS reminds us to shoot what you like to shoot, and you won't feel like you are"working." This is SO true. I for example, do not have a problem waking up at fucking 4 AM on a Saturday and drive to Malibu to shoot the sun rising over the mountains to composite into the BG of our December cover shot, even though yes, it sucked in some ways... Even in my mid-morning, pre-sunrise, no-coffee-yet dazed state, I still found myself laughing with no reason at all, because I still can't believe that I get to do shit like this and get paid for it. If I could go back in time 5 years and tell myself then what I am doing right now, I wouldn't believe it. Not for one second. Sure I wish the pay was better, but fuck man. It's all about balance, and for me right now, this balance is damn good.
Also, don't let him fool you. DS actually works and busts his ass harder than almost anyone I know lol. Nothing happened overnight, and nothing was handed to him on a silver platter... The man deserves what he has.
Nate

wow, what a horrible interview video, i mean ideally you want 2 if not 3 cameras for a good interview. But if your working with only one, thats not a good angle for it, and you MUST have it on a tripod.
Despite this DSP, is actually really well spoken and very insightful. Great information out there, i really wish they would have shot this better, this could be a great piece to get around the community if it was.
Doug if your ever in town id be more than happy to do a better version of this interview for you, or to help out on any shoots. Hell if your even anywhere in texas let me know. Same for you Nate.
