I went through the same thing. Look through the old posts, I swear.
Here's a really simple way to put it. The 55-250 is more than adequate if you just want to extend your kit lens out to 250mm. The images will come out fine. If you love your kit lens, you'll love the 55-250.
The f/4L feels like an aluminum bat compared to the nifty two-fifty. Constant f/4 aperture doesn't seem like much, but at 200mm, that's fast for $500-$600. It's all contained so nothing sticks out, etc. Very good optics in a sturdy tube.
Don't worry about the IS. That 70-300 has to have the IS to be usable. It's just not smart to blow that much cash on that lens when the f/4L is right there.
If anything we're trying to save you from buying a lens, and regretting it.
Keep in mind that we're upgrading gear all the time. If I had bought Joe's lens on Tuesday, my f/4L might be on it's way to you for $500 as I write this.

That's a lens archive I use to decide whether or not lenses are for me.
You can search for groups and photos on Flickr the same way by using the model numbers:

I keep going back and looking for deals on the F/4L to tell you the truth. Those bird pics you take have stuck my brain, lol..
It's funny, I don't have problems dropping $$$ on fishing equipment, I'm just having a hard time justifying it for camera shit

I'm that way too. I have no problem owning over 50 paintball markers and dropping $500-1000 a month buying new ones yet there's something about dropping coin on photography for me right now. I think you and I are both in the same boat - DSLR is new to us and dropping massive coin on lens is a giant step.
I agree totally with what Mike said - the 70-300 needs IS and at that price point just buy the F4. If you just want a telephoto lens to start down that track - grab the 55-250IS for $229.

Getting back to the original post - anyone with either the F4 or F2.8 or have used both - what would you recommend and why?
Basically if you have the F4 ~ do you wish or have plans to upgrade to the F2.8? If you have the F2.8 ~ was it an upgrade or do you regret the purchase? If you've used both ~ what do you think? LOL!

Do I need a L series lens?
No.
I fucking highly doubt it.. can I get similar shots with something cheaper? I'm thinking yes.. If the 55-250 Canon lens will do an adequate job and is better then the 70-300 (Either the Canon or Tamron) then simply tell me that and I'll go buy one this afternoon.
Yes. I don't know what it is about the internet that promotes such hard gearwhoring, but it's just... if you're not a professional and there aren't technical or performance-related requirements for your work, what sense does L glass make if you're not absolutely rolling in cash? What do most people on here do with their images aside from post 800x600 shots in random threads? Not much, I'm assuming.

Here are some of the ones that I took today out of about 1500 that I kept. I haven't processed any yet, hoping that I won't really have to.

These two guys were still going at it after the play had turned about 30 yards downfield. They kept pushing each other until the whistle.

Other then a small curves adjustment to darken the sky a bit and try and make the clouds 'pop' a bit more, I didn't touch a thing (Not like I know how to anyhow, lol)

It would be nice if it were in focus.
