What's your budget for mods?
It's going to be an ongoing project just for something to do so I don't really have a designated allotment of money I'm going to immediately dump into it for mods. I don't even know what car I'm getting so when it comes to modding I have no idea what direction I want to go in. Full build big turbo, etc or just basic mods to make the car slightly more enjoyable. I guess it'll all depend on what I buy.
I'm still swaying heavily back and fourth between the sc and the mr2. Nothing suggested so far really appeals to me all that much. Maybe the fc3s, but rotaries freak me out a bit and for what I'd pay for one I still think I like the other two much better.

I just learned not-too-long-ago about e36 rear subframes pulling from the chassis... wicked cool. I always thought they were pretty sturdy. of course, the E30 rot is pretty well known.
I say volvo... DAMN IT! hell, you could probably find an old xj6 and do a kickass swap to it, too.
ohhh... get an xr4ti! or mercury capri turbo (miata, not mustang)

It would be impossible for me to narrow down choices without a target purpose for the car.
Sorry, I know. I'm being real wishy washy with what I want. But the bare bones of it are -rwd -Enjoyable to drive (comfort/fun) -modding potential. Doesn't necessarily mean I'll mod immediately but I like the option -aesthetically pleasing. This is subjective, and really all that matters is how I feel about the car. My gf thinks mr2s are ugly but she can fuck off. I love them.

I just checked it out. Dude has it at his harley shop a block from my work. I guess it was payment because some dude owed him money. He's firm in the $2k. Has milky coolant, overheats just idling and cyl 3 misfire code. Guy doesnt know any of the history on it. Missing passenger wheel cover ($115 shipped on eBay) Clean title, straight as an arrow body. What are the chances I could pull the head, mill that, put a new gasket kit in and it'd be good? Last thing i want to have to do is pull a block to have it decked.

Maybe the fc3s, but rotaries freak me out a bit and for what I'd pay for one I still think I like the other two much better. They shouldn't freak you out, just look at it as an opportunity to learn something new. It sounds like you are leaning heavily towards the MR2, so I think you should go that way. I had no idea you could find a turbo model in your price range.
Pretty clean and stock. Nearly pulled the trigger on it but it's one of the first cars I came across a few weeks ago and told myself to calm down and make sure I know what I want because I had just started looking. And now it looks like it might be sold. http://www.mr2.com/forums/mk-2-cars/Toyota-MR2-56208-fs-my-white-mr2.html
Also, TODAY, I'm really really leaning towards a white sc300. If I could find one locally I might go pick it up. I just wish I could fucking decide and stick with it, because tomorrow if there was a local mr2 I might just pick it up. I was hoping the thread would guide me in one particular way but I'm still just as uncertain as I was when I posted it.

PM the guy and see if it's still available, tell him you have cash in hand. Who knows if the other guy followed through with it.

Mustang fills the criteria very well, from what it seems. SN95 is fairly good looking, pretty reliable, modification potential is enormous, and they kick ass at the track, if they are setup properly. If you go for the 5.0, they are also easy to work on, easy to tune, and cheap to get power out of, although you don't exactly start with a whole lot to begin with.

With import, you often get import tax on the parts. I try to keep my car fairly clean, and in good running condition, and even when parts go bad, usually you can go and pick them up for almost nothing at the autozone. If you are meticulous like me, you can also purchase MotorCraft parts for not a lot more. Junk yards are stocked with those cars, so parts are available from there as well.
Suspension wise, you can go crazy and spend almost 10 grand on stuff that will make it handle like a gokart, but you can also get about 80% of that with just good springs, shocks, and sway bar kit, and wider set of wheels of course.

yeah, he was showing me where the floor of his trunk was creasing, and cracking. I had no idea that generation had any issues back there.

e46s and z3s have the subframe tearing problem too. google e46 subframe tear, you'll see.

I don't know if I'd be comfortable buying stuff from someone who can't spell. Haha! Yeah, I agree...after a limited forum search on google though, that guy is supposed to be teh best guy to get a turbo kit from lol As you may expect, spelling, punctuation, and grammar weren't exactly strong within those forums either.

I was hoping the thread would guide me in one particular way but I'm still just as uncertain as I was when I posted it. If you're anxious to just buy something, don't get an MR2. It takes a lot of time to find a good one. The one you posted is a pile. 170k miles? Plan on a new turbo, clutch, timing belt, cap, rotor, coil, wires, coolant flush (huge PITA), AFM, fuel pump, etc.
You should really considering learning what sort of MR2 you would like to build, and then buy someone's well-done project car. http://www.mr2oc.com is a huge resource. Check the FS forum there. A ct20b (JDM turbo) or ct27 (ATS Racing modded stock turbo) car can run a high 12. A TD06 or GT28rs is getting very fast. A t3/t4 KO Racing Street Brawler (SB46 or 50 trim) is an awesome kit. Anything bigger is redonkulous and incredibly fast. Look for a car with quality headwork (cams, oversized valves, port) done by a reputable shop. This will save you an assload.
