First off, hello to all. I'm brand new to the site, and I have a 2010 SI in Louisiana. Ok, now that the intro is out of the way, on to my dumb question. I know that washing a car is supposed to be very basic and simple, right? Well I've read up on reviews of hundreds of products, and countless detailing guides, and it seems like everyone has something different to say. I love my car, and I don't want to mess anything up. When it comes time to clay bar and polish and things of that nature that are more complex than just washing, drying, and waxing, how do I know the correct way to do all of this? No one ever taught me this stuff...

There will always be a million different reviews as to what product is best, as for washing it, generally roll with the good ol' 2 bucket method, one for clean water/soap and a second for rinsing your cleaning cloth/sponge/whatever. When it comes to waxing and clay bars, I'm not the best regarding that area, there are a few detailers on this site...to which I'm not sure how often they frequent newbie info section...
Let me start by saying I am NOT an auto detailer but I have been building and successfully showing cars for a number of years. As mentioned the 2 bucket method is a good method and if you must, use a liquid car soap designed for washing cars. Me personally, I only use plain water, but I don't drive most of my cars daily. I have used the clay bar on my vehicles before and as this is something that removes your finish I would not use it regularly. The finish on your car should feel like glass when washed/waxed. After you have washed and waxed your car take the back of your hand and lightly drag it along the paint. If it's smooth then no need to clay bar. If it doesn't feel like glass then you might need to give it a once over with the clay. I use the Mequiars clay bar kit, just my own preference. It's complete and easy to use. When you first start out do a small section down low somewhere to test until you get the hang of it. I wouldn't clay the car but once in a blue moon. As long as you regularly maintain the finish it should be fine. I'm sure there are detailers who will chime in with a more professional opinion once they come across the thread. Best of luck.
Thank y'all so much! I do use the two bucket system when I wash, and I use Mequiars products. After every wash/wax, I check with a zip-lock baggie to make sure it's nice and smooth, and it always is (since it's only 4 months old). I appreciate your comments! Thanks so much! Xx
